George Shultz has died - Nan3cy - 02-07-2021

At the age of 100. I wish there were more people like him these days — in both parties. (Hope that is sufficiently non-political...)

George was a great fan of Stanford sports. We would see him at most MBB games

George Schultz was my commencement speaker (and Martyup and GaryT and UltimateCard and any other class of 83ers who are here). He was the Secretary of State at the time so there were plenty of guys around in sunglasses, dark suits and ear pieces. They freaked out a bit as the graduating seniors shot champagne corks at the stage. Once flew close past Schultz, who simply said, "You missed."

Had front row center seats at that graduation. Have a great shot of me somewhere shaking his hand with a bunch of secret service guys about to step in. Of course, my friends were laughing hysterically. RIP.

Last commencement ceremony in intimate Frost Amphitheater- maybe too intimate?

I took a non-credit seminar from him my first year at the GSB, when he had just come back from being Secretary of Labor. I always thought he was great in small groups but a real snooze as a speech-maker. If he could have given good speeches I think he could have been a terrific president.

I thought he was more of a victim there. He got taken in by Elizabeth Holmes's charm. Of course if he'd been more discerning and skeptical, she'd have had a harder time getting funding and keeping things going so long.

Haven’t read it. Clearly it should go into my queue. Don’t know if it will change my opinion of his 60+ year career though.

when i was a freshman in the early 1980's, i saw him walking on campus with Francis Pym, who was at the time foreign secretary of the United Kingdom.  but i didn't introduce myself, as they appeared busy in conversation.
