Merry Christmas and Happy New Year... - Mick - 12-26-2020

...to the 803,000 Americans who lost their job during Christmas week.

https://www.dol.gov/ui/data.pdf

The total number of continued weeks claimed for benefits in all programs for the week ending December 5 was 20,363,675, a decrease of 283,170 from the previous week. There were 1,757,802 weekly claims filed for benefits in all programs in the comparable week in 2019.

Total U-6 unemployment (total unemployed plus all persons marginally attached to the labor force, plus total employed part-time while seeking full time employment, plus total "discouraged" unemployed) now 12.0%, or nearly one in eight American workers.

Happy Holidays, y'all!

In addition, many of the benefits that were part of the CRES, including expanded unemployment benefits, expired today.

At this point all I can say is that I am going to increase my charitable giving.   Just immense needs out there.

It seems almost hopeless trying to contribute as an individual. A drop of water in the ocean. But my wife and I "adopted" a family through my employer. It's anonymous, so difficult to know what they need, but guessed that visa gift cards were the best we could do. At least we know that 100% of our giving gets to the family.

I have been donating exclusively to food banks since a couple months into the pandemic. These are desperate times.
