MBB: CSU Bakersfield @ Stanford @ Santa Cruz, 6pm Monday -
burger - 12-21-2020
Another one of our last-minute schedule additions tonight. Bakersfield is 1-2 against D-I, with their only win over an awful Idaho team. Arizona beat them by 25 about 2 weeks ago. They're shooting 19% on 3-pointers so far this season.
Daejon Davis is out with a "lower leg" injury.
Game is on Pac-12.

The sloppiest offensive game this team has played so far. 1-12 from 3.
They will still win, though.

That ally oop from Ziare to Bryce was incredible.
The other 39 minutes and 58 seconds of this game were awful. Get well soon, Daejon. We need you.

For anyone reading this thread and worrying, we won by 13 points. Lol.

That game was not impressive, but right after the UofA game it would be hard to play at a solid level for CSU-Bakersfield.
Now the team will get to go back to campus and quarantine until they leave for Pac-12 games. Uh-oh! That sounds super risky, but I guess it will be OK since nothing happens on campus at this point in December even if it was a normal year.
It will be important to keep getting wins whenever possible since there is no way to know how many future games might be lost to COVID and COVID contact tracing.

The women are not coming back to campus/SCC.
I assume the same holds true for the men.
Do you know specifically they are coming back to campus, or is that just an assumption?
I thought they all might break for home for a week or so, and then return to locale (outside SCC) to prep for games. Per women's game today, the Stanford women will be spending Xmas in a hotel together. Ugh.
P.S. Watching the men's game, I had two overriding thoughts: (i) let down post Arizona, though I don't want to belittle Bakersfield's scrappiness - they played hard and had good athletes (just not enough good shooters), and (ii) the refs must have thought the viewers tuned in to watch them blow whistles. They had SO MANY unnecessary calls, compounded by the fact that many of them were also bad calls. Really sucked the flow and enjoyment out of the game.
P.P.S. Stanford squeaks by CSUN; Cal blows them out. Stanford gets by CS Bakersfield; AZ blows them out. Hmmm . . .

FWIW, in Ziaire's post-game interview (TOS) he mentioned going back to campus and that it would be his first Christmas without his parents.

Montgomery or his announcing partner said they were going to go back to Stanford to quarantine for 2 weeks.
If they're in Santa Clara, they won't be allowed to practice right? That's a lot of time away from basketball.

No idea where from this clip, though.

But if the next game is 12/31 at OSU, will they go back to SCC and leave for the game while practicing elsewhere?

You'll note both those "squeaks" were double-digit wins without Daejon Davis.
Also, the transitive property isn't a thing. Cal lost big to Pepperdine, who lost to CSUN, who was blown out by Cal. Hmmm . . .

Actually one of the announcers said back to Stanford then to Oregon on the 27th.

Right, and that they would not practice until the 27th.

Time off is just what this team needs. I'm glad they'll get it, through Sun/Mon at least. Must be hard to be away from family at this time of year, but this team seems close, so I'm sure they'll have fun and bond even further. Plus, Stanford and the coaches must have something planned for the team for the holidays. Their time on the road, in SCruz, and huddled together on the Farm during this crazy, dark moment will make for a memorable time that none of them will forget going forward.

Is there any reason they could not engage in individual workouts supervised and designed by the coaching staff? You cannot have too much FT practice.

My assumption has been that this hotel lifestyle 24/7 is not conducive to optimal play in D1 athletics. The three Stanford coaches have done great things given the circumstances and have not reached for excuses that are readily available.
Football had the benefit of knowing the end would be mid-December. Women's basketball has the benefit of a very deep and supremely talented team that makes it possible to spread the burden to many. Men's hoops doesn't have the depth or the decadent quality, so a little fatigue from the hotel lifestyle could quickly translate into a string of losses.
Therefore taking 5 days off at their campus homes might be the safer choice for the season. It seems probable that the Stanford Athletic teams will be doing the road show thing for at least another month based on what has been happening with other age groups in CA athletics.
Take the 5 days. Recharge, relax and trust that they won't forget how to play the game.
It could be a very, very long Pac-12 hotel-based season and the 5 days will be more valuable than wringing out the last precious drops of player development.
Sadly, I should note. This does not mean I think 5 days will be sufficient. I fear that even with the rest the hotel lifestyle for an entire hoops season will ultimately drain this team.

You beat me to it, Farm. I agree completely. Heal up, sleep in, relax, and try to have as much bonding time together as possible during this brief holiday respite (and during a very dark winter, no less).

I'm hopeful that the team will grit their way through the season and even be stronger for the (relative) adversity they're dealing with now.
But I hate that Santa Clara Co. could potentially tank a promising season for the men or the women for absolutely no gain. With testing three times a week (or so reported the Daily back in October), it's very unlikely that any outbreak on the team would spread far within the team and even more unlikely that it would spread meaningfully in the community.
