Another claim bites the dust - M T - 12-12-2020

Once it was that kids didn't get sick.
Then it was that kids didn't spread COVID to their family,
Then there was the claim that athletics doesn't spread COVID.

Mercury News reports
"An outbreak of 77 positive COVID-19 cases has been traced to an illegal youth basketball tournament held last month in Rocklin, Santa Clara County public health officials said Friday."

(The article then indicates it is 39+3+35+17 = 94 cases.)
About half the cases are middle and high school students.

I hope that the kids & adults & their families all do well.

I have such great faith in the track and trace capabilities of Santa Clara County public health officials.
BTW, are any of them SCC residents - or was this just a factoid that someone else compiled that SCC glommed onto?

Despite my skepticism of SCC Health Officials' tracing capabilities, it would not surprise me one iota if there was an outbreak tied to that Rocklin facility - very enclosed and very poorly ventilated, if it's the place I'm thinking of.

P.S.  Can someone explain how I can be a subscriber to the Mercury News and not be able to access their online stuff?  Strange.

SCC reports "As part of its investigation of this outbreak, the County learned that players from affected teams had traveled from Santa Clara County to participate in a youth basketball tournament in Placer County on November 7 and 8, 2020. Thirty-three of 37 players and all three coaches from the Santa Clara County based teams tested positive for COVID-19."
SCC has cited the private basketball program. Calif. Dept. of Public Health is investigating the tournament operators.

I expect the county will not reveal anything more about the individuals.  Further details will have to come from the individuals.

Based on the date of the tournament, the associated 77 SCC cases would have started showing up about November 15, when the daily average was about 327 new cases.

I apologize for previously pointing to the news article rather than chasing down the press release.
The Merc's article pointed to an August article about the tournaments. 

Some hope:  On Dec. 12, SCC reported 821 cases.  One week earlier, SCC reported 895 cases.
A small downturn, and maybe just in the noise, but hope that R has dropped to close to 1.

SCC indicates that about one out of 10 cases need hospitalization and more than 1/3 of those go into the ICU.

Over the last 5 days reported (Dec 7 - 11), in SCC, the number of ICU patients with COVID has been between 90 and 94.  I have to believe they must be changing the criteria for which patients to admit to the ICU.  The number of non-ICU COVID patients has risen from 285 to 345.
