Ziaire Williams - Hank 91 - 12-01-2020
I know it's only been one game, and I know he will never have the body of work to match Todd Lichti, Brevin Knight, Adam Keefe, Arthur Lee, Casey Jacobsen, or Josh Childress. (The best players I've seen during my time as a fan.) But. Ziare Williams could be the most talented player ever to play for the Cardinal. Discuss.

After one game, I have seen nothing that would lead me to disagree with your assessment. He does seem to be a step change in his first game. Clearly the best player on the court yesterday (for either team), and probably will be for most of our games.

Wild guesses of top 5 (when each of these players was in top form at full health):
1. Hank Luisetti
2. George Yardley
3. Todd Lichti
4. Jim Pollard
5. Brevin Knight
HM: Josh Childress, Brook Lopez, Rich Kelley, Casey Jacobsen
Right now I'm thinking that Ziaire projects as about a Yardley-level (his NBA career) OR no worse than a Lichti-level (Stanford, pre-injury) player.

He looked great and if he continues to perform at this level and higher, he could be that player. But I want to let him play the games and enjoy it without trying to draw such big conclusions so quickly. Alabama runs a high scoring, flow offense and pretty undisciplined defense. They take risks to try to get steals and cause disruption but were not looking to lock anyone down, just trying to get a quick turnover or get the ball back after the other team scored. The great hope I have is that Williams does not seem to be selfish and really did create space, and probably inspiration, for the rest of the team, to play at a high level. If he can elevate the play of the entire team, he will be an all-time great.

Ziaire's line was 19 points, 8-15 FGs, 3-5 3 pt FGs, 0-0 FT, 8 rebounds (all D), 3 assists, 1 steal, 0 blocks, 6 TOs, 3 PFs in 29 minutes.
Amazing for a true freshmen's first game, but I hope that he can cut down on the TOs and PFs versus the Tar Heels.

Like some have said, what impressed me most was that he never tried to do too much, and he always looked to his teammates. It's pretty amazing that he was able to play within himself and play within the system at such a young age. He's certainly going to be fun to watch. Oh, and you can already see evidence that he's making the other players better.

Just like with Brink, it'll be interesting to see what happens when he faces a tougher defender.
He also may need to get his conditioning up a bit. Seemed to lag a little in the second half of the second half.
But definitely, you can see the talent is there.

Certainly the most talented walking in the door, not sure he will be the most talented walking out. I'd give that to Childress.

All the more impressive. I guess it didn't seem like Jones was truly trying to shut him down. Felt like Williams often had a lot of room to get the ball.
Anyway, all the more reason to be high on Williams then. =)
