Assume this is football but it’s news

RE: The relocation of Stanford sports - BostonCard - 11-30-2020

Sigh.

https://covidtracking.com/data/charts/all-metrics-per-state

The metrics in Oregon and Washington are really no better than California (in fact, they look a bit work).  This looks a lot like "Dad, mom won't let me go to the party with my friends, will you let me?"

Odd. All I get is a bar with nothing inside. When I quote you, there's a link to Wilner's twitter feed.

Seems to work on Chrome, not on Safari. . . .

Interesting that in Wilner's next tweet, he commented that Stanford tests each play 8-9x a week, and hasn't had a positive test (except Mills, I guess) since July. If that is indeed the case, they are doing an amazing job of keeping the players and staff safe, and much safer than they'd be on their own. . . .

RE: The relocation of Stanford sports - Papa John - 11-30-2020

Well, Stanford is scheduled to play UW this Saturday and OSU the Saturday following. Maybe stay in the Pacific NW after December 5 and play all road games culminating with WSU on December 19?

The quest for a few $$$ looks rather pathetic.   Just a couple of COVID cases would likely terminate the rest of the season given the number of days left.

It will be very interesting to see if this is provided for football only ($$$) or if this is provided for all sports currently active (Title IX).

Could you redirect the energy trying to test the players 8 - 9x a week towards testing the student population (or a vulnerable subgroup) instead and keep the broader Stanford community safer than they are on their own?

I assume the TV money for football games disappears if those games aren't played. The AD just cut 11 sports to balance the budget. Want to lose some more?

I can't recall, how much of the broader Stanford community was actually on campus this fall? The answer is, who knows? Kind of depends on the testing for the community that's being done. Is it not at all, once a week, once you returned?

RE: The relocation of Stanford sports - BostonCard - 11-30-2020

I think that's the point.  It strikes me as a fundamental misalignment of priorities that we bring back football players to campus, build an infrastructure around testing them daily and keeping them safe, but don't even attempt to do that for the students.  The message it sends is that finding a way to play football is more important than academics or finding a way to get the students to campus.

If the University of Illinois can do it, how come Stanford didn't?

But the government is different.

Pacific Northwest in December. Bring your shorts and sunscreen.

This is the exact analogy a friend of mine used the other day. Makes perfect sense.

RE: The relocation of Stanford sports - BobK - 11-30-2020

Actually the governments in Oregon abd Washington are about the same as California. Oregon almost had a 14 day quarantine for those entering the state.

I wish the Stanford women's basketball team would relocate to a new "home" and play some more games.
That opener was incredibly tantalizing.

Agreed.  This team deserves every opportunity to have the best shot at a national championship.

I agreed, especially if they are able to keep everyone safe and healthy!

Hey, it's actually sunny this week in Portland. Yes, day time highs are in the 40s, but we have sun!

Stanford does require and provide Covid-19 testing for non-athlete students who are on campus: https://studentaffairs.stanford.edu/covid-testing

The bottom line is that some activities, like lecture courses, can be done virtually. Other activities, like sports, lab research and most ensemble performances, cannot. It's true that Stanford's football team and other sports programs are provided services above and beyond those of non-athletes, but this special infrastructure is dictated by the demands of the public health restrictions. One big loss for me personally is the cancellation of live performing arts events, which have really hit the Music Department and the program formally known as Stanford Lively Arts. But shutting down Stanford athletics won't help the performing artists and other non-athletes one bit. I hope that Stanford continues to strive to maintain its Before Times activities--teaching, research, athletics, performances, alumni relations, etc.--to the best of its abilities.

My two cents.

Stanford students, faculty and staff can be tested pretty much as often as they want. I don't think the Stanford community is the issue, more the county as a whole.

Of course, then there's the doctors/nurses et al.  Don't ask them how many times they get tested.
