LOOK ALIVE, PEOPLE! 6:30pm PST on ESPN2. We open favored by 1.5.
Quick notes/primer on Alabama:
- They are expected to make the tournament, picked preseason 5th in what should be a very competitive SEC.
- They return 3-4 starters and another important rotational piece or two.
- Their big name grad transfer, an All-Ivy center from Yale, had a pretty bad game in their creampuff opener, scoring 4 points and committing 3 PFs. He got the start but 2 returners ended up playing more minutes (hence "3-4 starters" above).
- Similarly to us, they had their stud PG declare early - he was drafted #13. However, they have undergrad transfer Jahvon Quinerly from Villanova stepping right into the PG role. That's the one position that concerns me on our offensive side; defensively, Daejon Davis can lock the PG down.
- Also like us, they run small. Their tallest rotational player, the grad transfer from Yale, is 6'9"/10".
Should be a real good one. Hell of an opening test, that's for sure.

Doubtful I'll be watching. The last time we played them (I think), it almost caused a divorce.

If you're referencing the time I think you're referencing, I was unlucky to enough to be in Alabama at that time. Ugh.

Any thread that even obliquely references that game needs a trigger warning. Sixteen years later and I am still not over that.
And you know they will inevitably show clips from that game during the broadcast tonight.

Very excited to finally see this team play. It will be interesting to see how deep Haase goes since Alabama is a tough opponent and he didn't have a cupcake game to test lineups. Alabama's backcourt concerns me (Their PG and SG both went for 18 in their first game, and John Petty can also flat out shoot it). Hopefully Ziaire is as good as advertised and ODS and Daejon come to play.

I not-so-fondly refer to that game as getting "Sprewell-ed"....

The good news is our backcourt is one of the best in the country defensively. Daejon Davis and Bryce Wills will almost definitely start out at PG and SG respectively, and both are monsters on defense.

Will 7'0" redshirt freshman Fitzmorris be of any value to the team this year?

Yes, but mostly in situations when he is going against players whose jerseys say Stanford on the front.
In other words, he's valuable during practice.

not this year, but I hold out some optimism that Fitzmorris' agility develops. Does anyone remember Greg Butler?

Well Butler did average 9 points at Stanford. Still several years in the NBA and who would have guessed that when he was a Soph

Some trivia then...
Which Stanford player has had the longest NBA career?
Most games played in the NBA?
Most PPG (with at least 100 games played)?
Most Rebounds PG?
Most Assists per game?
First Stanford player drafted?
Stanford has had two players drafted in six separate years. Two are obvious because they were sets of twins. Who were the other teammates drafted the same year?
Which Stanford player played for the most different NBA teams?
BC

I’ll start
Rebounds per game Rich Kelly
First player drafted by the NBA George Yardley. Yes I’ve pointed that out to Stanford

George Yardley was drafted in 1950. Jim Pollard was drafted in 1947 by the Chicago Stags. The issue is that he was at Stanford in 1941-42, and then the Coast Guard until 1946. Still, I didn't ask who the first player to be drafted from Stanford was, just who the first Stanford player to be drafted.
Rich Kelly had 8.9 rebounds per game, a whole RPG above the aforementioned Pollard.

Back to Fitzmorris one last time. His older sister played Stanford WVB. A relative use to comment on a VB board. She was amusing. "They're not setting Fitzmorris enough"..."They are setting OH1 too often"...
If you start to see comments like "the guards are not feeding Fitzmorris enough"; you can guess who found out about this message board.

Ah BC I assumed you meant by the NBA. The Chicago Stags good one.
Yardley the top scorer on the NBA among Stanford NBA players
Winners thus far are
Texas
North Carolina
Indiana
