Vanderbilt fires football coach Derek Mason during 0-8 campaign. Shaw should immediately hire him and let him take over our defense. Even our offense.

Franklin can go back to Vanderbilt now.

I was thinking the same thing, and I think it's been mentioned by others here. It would be great to have Mason back in any capacity. I'm not sure what his other career options would be at this point, but I assume he'll be back in the coordinator pool. I'd love to have him back, and it might be the best way to get some new (kind of new) ideas in the meeting rooms. It would make sense.

Will Fuller still have an open invite to kick for the team with Mason gone?

If I'm remembering correctly, Derek Mason was co-defensive coordinator as well as associate head coach in 2011 under Shaw so you could potentially just add him without any firings or demotions, but that being said it might not be a great look after cutting a bunch of sports programs due to financial concerns, to add what is likely an expensive coach/coordinator.

This is incorrect. The NCAA caps the number of on-field assistants at FBS programs to 10, with the exception of service academies. As I mentioned in another thread, any scenario in which Mason returns would probably involve Akina retiring given Shaw’s reluctance to fire assistants (i.e. not firing a single one in 10 years).

I could imagine it was a possibility while on the six game losing streak.
But coming off of a win Shaw is probably confident that nothing needs to change; that they just need to execute.

Mason has made a lot of money in his 6 or 7 years as head coach at Vandy; it's possible that salary might not be the principal driver of his next employment decision.

same way we were able to originally afford Akina. Mason was extended in 2019 and his comp that year was $3.5 million. assuming he is not hired as head coach, Vandy will be on the hook for paying most of his salary for a few years for whomever hires him.

Speaking of people getting paid well after getting fired, I just wanted to resurface the money that former Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis was paid to no longer coach at a few destinations:

Well, let's see. Stanford was 11-2, 12-2 and 11-3 in Mason's three years as DC from 2011-13. They were #30, #11 and #10 in the country in points allowed per game in those three years. Ranked in the top ten all three years. New year's day all three years, including two Rose Bowls and a Fiesta bowl.
I don't think I'm going out on a brobdingnagian limb when I say that I really hope Shaw hires Mason again...if Mason will come.

good g-2. also, fwiw, Harbaugh hired Mason. not sure if a vocal, independent assistant is really keeping with the Shaw hiring pattern. likely a first if it were to occur.

Time to break the pattern. Mason now and Luck (OC) next. Time to build out the program with urgency and peak execution.

"I'd like to introduce our new 'Andrew Luck Director of Offense,' Andrew Luck."
Seriously, I am curious if Luck would be able to go from no coaching experience to Stanford OC. I mean you would think a QB of Luck's level could do it, but I don't know if I've ever heard of that before.

Shaw could have/should have tried Husak first in that role.
BTW, I'm holding out irrational hope that Luck ends up in a 'Niner uniform in a year or two . . .

Why do Stanford fans think that ex-Stanford players with no experience can walk into a coordinator's job and be successful? Not very likely.

Very on the nose for those of us who have lamented such a hiring and series of promotions.
Mason could be hired as an external consultant, could he not? Next year...while keeping Akina...

Because Stanford fans think Andrew Luck could walk on water while turning water into wine with one hand and curing cancer with the other. An,d until someone proves he can't, who's to stay it isn't possible? ;)

Yeah, I think we tried an experiment like that with Walsh II. Thought outstanding football players without any coaching experience could walk in and be effective coaches. Didn't work out too well.

I agree the notion of former players coming in to be coaches without experience seems far-fetched. A learned QB who played in the NFL for several years could be an exception, I don't know.
But getting Mason in the fold even as a consultant seems to be a no-brainer for Shaw.
