WBB: Pacific Game Canceled (Replaced by USD, Monday at 2:00) - JTM - 11-25-2020

GoStanford.com shows the Pacific game on Sunday as canceled.  Rats!

Griffins78 - Griffins78 - 11-25-2020

Bummer! Hope they can schedule an alternative.

"Stanford Athletics is exploring alternative options to replace the game." --from the article.

So at least they're trying.

RE: WBB: Pacific Game Canceled - M T - 11-26-2020

Pacific indicates a Tier 1 player tested positive, requiring a 14 day suspension of activities for 14 days. (Next possible game for them is Dec 13 vs SJSU).

Stanford would have been their first game, so no other team is affected.

Maybe Akiddoc knows something about this but there seems to be consensus that a 7-10 day quarantine is coming soon to replace the 14.

Hooray! I don't see it on Stanford or USD's website yet, but hopefully it will show up soon. Looks like USD would have opened their season this Saturday against UC Santa Barbara, but the game was cancelled after a member of UCSB's coaching staff had a positive covid test. I imagine we'll see lots more of this type of shuffling this year, but good for the two remaining teams for figuring this out. Grateful that USD was willing to play us so that we can see some more of this incredibly promising team! Does anyone have any insight on our new opponents?

After seeing the Cal Poly score, hats off to USD for scheduling this game.  I don't know what the score will be, but there are pretty good odds this will result in a loss on USD's schedule.

RE: WBB: Pacific Game Canceled - CompSci87 - 11-27-2020

USD was voted 4th in the WCC in the conference preseason poll. Pacific was 6th, so perhaps getting USD instead is a small upgrade.

USD has one player on the preseason all-conference team, Myah Pace.

USD's last visit to Maples was in March 2008, but they didn't play Stanford then! They lost to Cal in an NCAA first round game hosted by Stanford.

Stanford is 3-0 against USD, having last played in the 1994-95 season. https://gostanford.com/news/2019/4/16/womens-basketball-records-vs-opponents.aspx

2:00 p.m.? Bad enough that we can't attend the game, I'd at least like to be able to *watch* the game.

It's a preseason game.  Feel a fever coming on, have a migraine, make an actual dr./dentists appointment, or go in early and take off early.  Damn, people, we are going to need to show some creative flexibility here!

Cheers,
Pete F.

I'm working from home, so I blocked out that time as busy on my calendar. There are plenty of other hours in the day for me to be online and writing code.

Can anyone recommend freeware for recording a livestream in Windows?  I am chairing a committee meeting from 2-4 that day.  Rather difficult for me to get out of it, and the timing could not be worse ;(

2020 is a great year to be retired.

I can't, as I run Linux on all my machines. I did a test with SimpleScreenRecorder yesterday and it seems to work well. It's Linux only, though. I also tried youtube-dl and that one doesn't work with Pac-12.com streams.

I'm sure there must be choices for Windows.

For those on Mac, I recorded a 1.3 hour live stream a couple of days ago. (Command-shift-5) but I must need to set up the audio correctly as there is no audio.   It wound up as an 8GB .MOV.   Just a reminder to check try your method out before game time.

If it had worked right, I would have used VLC (or its base program ffmpeg) to transcode it to something smaller in size.

You will often find video streams that try to prevent you from getting a copy.  As always, obey the copyright laws.  I am not a lawyer, but I would likely try to record pretty much anything so I could time shift it for my own viewing.

VLC is free & available & open source and runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux.  It has been actively developed since 2001.  It has a way (perhaps not enabled at first) to record network streams.  It has more controls than many people might wish, but I view those as options.  Definitely play with it first to know how to do what you want.

2 or 3 years ago, I looked around to find a program to transcode some video from one format to another.  There were a lot of free video recording/manipulation programs, but when you dig down into them, you will either be unable to find the company behind them or will find it to be a Chinese company.  Thank you, but absolutely not!  (Think you got a deal on a particular wifi router at Walmart, Amazon, E-Bay?  Think again)

Another alternative would be Video Download Helper, an add-on for the Firefox browser.  Around since 2007, by being in the browser, it can avoid some of the things done to block you from recording a video stream.

Last year, I signed up with SLING to watch Stanford WBB.  They offer (add-on cost) a way to schedule the recording of shows so you can watch them later.  The problem is that there is a limited number of hours that you can save, and there is no way to see a program you forgot to record (even if you know another SLING subscriber that has it).   I have not tried to record to my own storage from SLING.

With TiVo, there has been a way to download your recorded videos.   I don't know if it still works.

RE: WBB: Pacific Game Canceled (Replaced by USD, Monday at 2:00) - M T - 11-28-2020

Just breaking (see COVID board) is that the county is stopping all contact sports (games & practices), and it would effect the ability to play a game on Monday.

The order is effective Monday through Dec. 21. I would expect it to continue past that, but we shall see.
I presume that without practices, the 3 away games during that time are cancelled as well (at Cal, at LA schools).
For WBB, that's 7 games cancelled. Next game after 12/21 would be Jan 1.

As "contact sports" are specified (per the Merc article), I suspect swimming practices can continue.
