Gov Newsoms Excellent Dinner - lex24 - 11-13-2020

French Laundry!  Nov 6.  With a bunch of different folks from different households involved. Bet it was fantastic.  Now all of you make sure you don’t have anyone over for Thanksgiving.

This is stupidity. There are no leaders in government.

A stupid mistake, but he is owning up to it.  Attending was a very bad example; admitting the error was a good example; not acknowledging the error until it was published is also a bad example.   It apparently was a birthday party for a close, long-time friend.  Surely it MUST have crossed his mind that he shouldn't go and that he'd get called out for it.  Surely, whoever put this together knew this would be a problem.

Although he apologized, I'm sure his doing this will be cited tens of thousands of times across California as people decide whether to get together with someone.  "What would Newsom do?"

Having this come out the day of California's travel advisory is his poor timing.

By the way, the 10 Bay Area Public Health Officers put out this press release regarding the holidays, travel, and potential get-togethers.  Nothing detailed and nothing unexpected

What a dumbass. Newsom is a mediocrity, CA deserves better.

If Arnold ran again as a Dem, he'd win I bet.

RE: Gov Newsoms Excellent Dinner - BostonCard - 11-13-2020

My wife just saw what Newsom did, and her first reaction was "can you believe it?  He's going to go down for this."

Perhaps, but come on, Arnold loved/loves his fancy meals and I don't kid myself into thinking he would be eating at home alone.

I understand her comment.  But this will have no impact upon him. He gets his two terms as Gov. This is a one-party State.  And then, unless Harris gets in his way he runs for President.

I really like the little bullet point suggestions. I always look to county officials to figure out what to do. Maybe they should have added:

Eat a can of tuna with your cat.
Watch  TV 24/7
Sleep as much as possible

FWIW-  I think the vast majority of Californians tuned out to these a long time ago. And these suggestions are in my opinion insulting. We have brains we can figure out what we’re going to do if we aren’t getting together without having these people give us “suggestions.” It just reeks of overreach.

I think there is a hell of a lot of mental exhaustion out there. I will admit to,it. County officials little “tips” on how to make this less miserable doesn’t, imo, help. Choking down turkey while in a Zoom session is pretty flipping depressing. No matter how good the gravy is.

The holidays are always tough mentally for a lot of people. This year will be excruciating.

Was Reagan the last governor to win the presidency?  Newsom is not a good fit for National office as a Democrat.

Rumors are that he will appoint himself to be governor when Dianne Feinstein steps down, which may be sooner rather than later.

At this point,  just simplify the message.  3 Cs or something similar,  and hope that it is remembered when people's worry threshold is crossed.

RE: Gov Newsoms Excellent Dinner - M T - 11-13-2020

Is it elitist to think everyone else is simplistic and can't have a complex thought?

Both Clinton and Bush were Gov’s. And I think you meant appoint himself Senator.  That would be interesting. Heck, he could take Harris’s spot. But that means running in two years.

Boy, what a screw-up of a post.  Yes, of course Clinton and W Bush were both governors, and Mitt Romney was the Republican nominee.  And yes, I meant he could appoint himself Senator.  Don't think he'll replace Harris, though.

RE: Gov Newsoms Excellent Dinner - OutsiderFan - 11-14-2020

I know nobody ever jumps to conclusions on the internet, but in this case, does anyone know the testing situation that existed for this dinner?

The Golden State Warriors are planning to have fans at Chase Center, based on rapid PCR testing that is 99% effective at identifying the virus.  This is not the antigen test the Pac-12 is STUPIDLY relying on after the White House proved this test with only 70% accuracy does not help stop spread.

It apparently costs about $125/test. I have no idea whether this kind of testing was used for Newsom's dinner or not, but if it was, there is nothing really to see here other than an example of how the privileged can get tested to gather safely and the masses can't.

Listening to Ramona Shelburne on Papa & Lund yesterday morning she explained how there have been parties in the Hamptons that require attendees to take these rapid PCR tests the Warriors are patterning their plan after, so I doubt such a procedure would be out of the CA Governor's reach.  Shelburne also reported the Biden transition team is being advised by people who know all about these rapid PCR tests, with an eye toward getting these them scaled up and rolled out across the country.  Perhaps if the Federal Government purchased them en masse, the cost will go down.  This is the power the Federal Government has with FEMA that the current administration has not effectively leveraged.

If this Newsom dinner was attended by people who did not get properly tested before they gathered, Newsom should be flogged.

But the Congress should be flogged no matter what. How the hell can they gather together for an inside event and expect the public not to follow their example?  Pelosi says the tables are six feet apart and the room is well-ventilated. AYFKM? Mask wearing is impossible when eating and drinking, and I don't think the American public is capable of grasping the ventilated nuance. On a day with 184,000 new cases, it is so tone deaf to have this Congressional orientation event as to be breathtaking. I just heard The Hartford isn't allowing employees back in the office until at least June, but let's get our elected lawmakers together?

I'm now grappling with when to go back to CT. Seeing our incompetent leaders act the fools as they are, makes me feel like those who would be traveling with nearing 200k cases a day in the country, are going to be those with the worst judgment, those who follow the lead of the Washington elite. It all ads up for creating higher risk for me and my family, people who have been responsible throughout this whole pandemic and given up quite a lot to keep us and others safe.

And dated a 19 year old when he was 41.  And had an affair with his campaign manager's wife.  Perfect representative for the state of California.

I think that says it all about Gavin Newsom. I am disappointed, because I had hoped he could repeat the health care magic he did in San Francisco on a state wide basis. I thought he would fail in SF, so despite the fact I don't like "big government", I had hopes he might pull a rabbit out of the hat at the State level.

Instead, I think he has shown he is mostly a sound bite, not a leader. When there are tough decisions to be made, he checks the wind gauge. His failure to resist political pressure from Southern California on COVID-19 early this year has repeatedly come back to hurt the State. The number of things that went wrong "on his watch" are large and the remedial responses are generally arbitrary, poorly explained, or simply nonexistent. (Who on the State PUC was forced to resign in response to PG&E causing wildfires?)
