NFL and COVID: First outbreak - needle - 09-29-2020
I have been very surprised at the NFL being able to play games and have seemingly all stars (and almost all players) available for each game despite the pandemic.
So I'm not at all shocked that the Titans apparently have the first team outbreak:

I'm sure the Titans will not play Sunday and it's very likely the Vikings won't either. Theoretically, that could stop the outbreak from spreading.
Daily (or at least very frequent) testing has succeeded pretty well thus far, but when players aren't in a bubble and there's travel/spread in their communities, this is hardly shocking. I guess we'll find out if this becomes a near weekly occurrence for the NFL or if it will remain rare.

The latest report indicates that the current plan is to have games played as scheduled if no further positive cases before gametime. For the Titans, that would mean they would not have any practices (facilities are closed). Just a walkthrough on Saturday before playing on Sunday.

I would guess for at least this first outbreak, they would test everyone, regardless of the tracking tech, to err on the side of caution.

Raiders had some players show up at an “event” not wearing masks. Of course the lack of masks were the focus. But I question why teams are allowing “events” in the first place. ( it was a charity fundraising event in Vegas). Just increases the risk.
MLB didn’t go bubble. But it locked down pretty tight. And after some early trouble (in which it looked like the quasi-season was in jeopardy), it got through its regular season quite well. Surprised me.

ESPN reports that the Titans game will be postponed. A 4th Titan player has tested positive.

Titans-Steelers game is likely to be postponed until Monday or Tuesday after receiving one additional positive test result from the Titans, while the Vikings-Texans game seems to be proceeding as normal on Sunday, pending results of Vikings covid tests tomorrow (Thursday).

Titans game cancelled (for now, will try to make-up). Seems like a more sensible decision to me than maybe playing on Tuesday with very limited practice time and looming test results:

Apparently no Vikings (the Titans opponent this past Sunday) have tested positive. So their game is on this weekend.

If the Titans had registered zero additional positives on Wed and Thurs, I could see the league try to make a Monday/Tuesday night game happen. The schedule is not lightly trifled with or altered...but the additional positives on both Wed and Thurs are a real issue, and canceling is the appropriate response.

Lots more bad news for the NFL
1) Patriots practice player and Raiders DT Maurice Hurst tested positive on Tuesday. Patriots played Chiefs this past weekend and Raiders play Chiefs this coming weekend
2) Stephen Gilmore (Patriots) has tested positive. He was deemed a close contact of Cam Newton who was positive over the weekend.
3) Titans had 2 new positive tests on Wednesday. Game against Bills in jeopardy
4) Titans players apparently broke protocol by holding an impromptu practice after their facilities were shut down.
Not good news.
One silverlining. if the Chiefs and any other former opponents don't get new cases, that would mean close contact on the field might not be a big deal. (then again, the Chiefs had a practice player get it last week, so things are getting muddled. =/)

Chiefs strength and condition coach tests positive. No followup reported yet. This one could be worse than a player having it since likely the coach has access to all the players.
