Gabe Kapler might be . . . - teejers1 - 08-17-2020

mentally impaired.
Seriously.

What is the definition of insanity again . . . ?

The Giants are bad, but Kapler is putting them in position to LOSE, not win.
Pathetic.  End of story.

He’s spent too much time tanning the boys.....  What a strange hire.

RE: Gabe Kapler might be . . . - PVTree - 08-18-2020

Didn't spend too much time with Epstein. He probably spent it with Vinny, Boom Boom, and Horshack. Can the Giants welcome back Roger Craig? :)

RE: Gabe Kapler might be . . . - Phogge - 08-18-2020

Instead of sending a player down to the Sacto site why not send Coconuts and have him manage intrasquad games? He didn’t learn anything in Philly.

Almost as dumb as hiring Clancy Sheehan in 1960 when Horace and Chub were too hammered to notice that Clance was senile.

RE: Gabe Kapler might be . . . - OutsiderFan - 08-18-2020

You guys do realize the baseball skunkworks make all the decisions and the manager just explains them to players and the media, right?

The sharps don’t believe it is statistically possible for a 9th inning reliever to fail to protect a lead three times in a row, no matter who it is. And they are right. The Giants have managed to pull off feats that are near statistically impossible in their games since Friday.

I remember a few years ago reading how closers were overrated because the average MLB bullpen arm can get the final out of a game with a 1 run lead with close to 90% efficiency and it goes up to 99.7% with a 4 run lead. Just do the math on what the probability of three straight blown 1 run lead saves is and it’s 1/1000.  We can be relatively sure it won’t happen again because that would be a 1/10,000 probability. The Giants have broken the numbers geeks in charge of the 9th inning pitching decisions.

Like I said, they need better players because the pitching staff is absolute trash. I personally believe they are actually worse than they are showing because the Giants know how bad they are and are trying to get them the best matchups to limit their weaknesses and give the team enough to win games. The problem of course is the bullpen arms all suck. Can you imagine if the starters were worse?

Great posts on the stupidity of Kapler then a post explaining baseball to us

We are the reverse Astros. Management seems to want us to lose.

Why isn’t Watson the closer ?

Under insanity see Kapler

The sample size on Kapler with a terrible roster is way too small for me to conclude he is the problem. He may be, but the pitching is just ghastly awful, and the defense is atrocious as well.  Don't know how you win games with that combination.  At least the offense has improved steadily since Farhan assumed the helm.

RE: Gabe Kapler might be . . . - Phogge - 08-18-2020

OF, with all due respect did you play? I had a fairly incompetent coach in college but he knew enough not to bring in a guy after two consecutive bombings. I get that the Giants are all about building with crappy talent but there are fundamental mistakes being made by all on deck. The last thing that you want young players to have is a sense that losing is ok because they are young. This team doesn’t need a coconut guy with a bad marriage history and a narcissistic bent making mistakes because “It all will work out in the end.”

Willie McCovey led the old Giants kangaroo court. If you made a mental mistake you paid for it and at the end of the year the court’s fines made for a hell of a rap party. It’s ok to lose but for God’s sake the manager just can’t add to the ineptitude.

RE: Gabe Kapler might be . . . - BobK - 08-18-2020

So agree with Phogge

Just read a local story that Farham and Harris. Harris is the GM That the two have yet to tackle the current roster all work on the farm system

So now we know they don’t even care

This is the question I have for OF:  did you watch the games?  A manager (like . . . you know . . . a freaking FOOTBALL coach) has to watch the game and understand what is happening as the game unfolds - you know, appreciate what his eyes are telling him.  Either Kapler doesn't do that, or he is freaking blind, or he refuses to vary from whatever the analytics-based marching orders he has from Farhan, despite what his eyes tell him.

The last few games (and several earlier ones) have been mind-bogglingly stupid.  Little League managers would know NOT to do what Kapler did.  WTF?

And some radio guys captured Kapler's post-game interviews perfectly: even when answering questions from reporters that "I know you have to ask that," the dude conveys (or tries to, anyway) that he is the smartest guy in the room.  Please.  Nothing could be further from the truth.

Nobody is saying he is THE problem. They do have a poor roster. But he’s proven, first is Philly (which ends the SSS argument) and continuing on with the Giants that he doesn’t have a clue.  Particularly on handling a staff. He is incapable of in game decisions.  And unless he’s being zapped with an electrode HEs making those decisions.

Let me ask you some simple questions:

1.  Why was he fired in Philly after just two years, with a year remaining on his contract?
2. Who was named in 2019 as the manager MLB players would LEAST like to play for?
3.  There were numerous managerial jobs filled prior to the Giants hiring Kapler. Did you ONCE here him mentioned as a candidate for one of those jobs.
4.  What do you think the level of respect for Kapler is around the league?

And finally, “you guys do realize that” is a poor way to start a post about anything much less baseball.  I know more about baseball than the average bear, and I can’t hold a candle to Phogge and Bobk.

I was watching Fri and  Sat on my iPhone.  From pitch 1 Sat it was obvious he had nothing. Breaking pitch he couldnt get close to the zone and he had no fastball command within the strike zone. The A’s were coming out of their shoes. In the 9th the A’s have Olson coming up as tying run with two outs. Selman, who has been throwing well, is ready.  Instead they have a Gott pitch around Olson. You know the rest.

Monday mistake one came in the 5th. 2nd and 3d two outs Pujois up.  Rookie on deck - Anderson already struck him out twice.  Easy call. 4 fingers. Instead they”carefully” pitch to Pujois. Now he ain’t close to what he used to be. But he is one of the greatest right handed hitters of his day.And he’s smart. So he knows what’s happening. He’s not going to chase. He is simply going to sitting on one pitch in one location hoping for a mistake – which he got and  drove off the left field wall. Rookie comes up next and Anderson strikes him out again.

I started thinking about the eighth and ninth after the seventh. I assumed he’d go with Watson and Shaun Anderson although I wasn’t sure in what order. I was stunned when he went to Gott . Not only had he been obliterated the last two times out but that means he’s pitching again for the third time in four days - and he through a lot of pitches those two games. What any legitimate manager who has a feel for baseball would have done with Gott is find a couple low pressure situations to put him in and get his confidence back. He’s not an established closer anyway. The result was far from surprising. Although I though it would be Trout or Rendon.

And this is demoralizing. As you could hear from Yaz’s expletive.

The real-world test: EVERY corporado I have ever known who signaled the "smartest guy in the room" self-evaluation had two things in common. Their monumental superiority complex and blinders. People who refuse to be smarter tomorrow than they were today FAIL. The Zaidi/Kapler axis is a discouraging portent for Giants fans. These two are co-dependent. Could do some real damage to the franchise until owners conduct an intervention. This one smells bad.

RE: Gabe Kapler might be . . . - OutsiderFan - 08-18-2020

I'd honestly rather talk about the Fernando Tatis absurdity than the Giants today.

I haven't seen but a few innings from a couple games.  Otherwise, I watch the Mets, Yankees, and Red Sox (in that order) since I get SNY, YES, and NESN on the TV package in CT.

If I saw Giants games, I'd probably want Kapler taking a long walk off a short pier, but I just really have no interest in the team other than the development of prospects. And since they aren't playing, there is no real reason to care much. Can't even follow the Rivercats, Squirrels, SJ Giants, Green Jackets, Volcanoes, or AZL.

RE: Gabe Kapler might be . . . - Phogge - 08-18-2020

It’s too bad that we can’t see Luciano play. That’s the guy I am really interested in. Ditto Corry who is said to be electric.

RE: Gabe Kapler might be . . . - Maple Leaf - 08-18-2020

Did Walt Harris change his name to Gabe Kapler?   I guess if the Giants punt when down a run in the bottom of the 9th then I will have my answer.

By having Gabe Kapler in the dugout they may have punted the entire season. Lets hope that is all they are kicking away.

I like how Farhan is building the farm system.  I think he can turn this around.  But the Kapler hire from day one had me scratching my head.

I like how Farhan is building it as well.  Last year, all of the minor league teams improved, some significantly.  And Farhan's been saddled with many terrible contracts from older players who can no longer produce.  Of course, Kapler and Farhan get the blame for that.

BTW, at the end of last season, Kapler's and Bochy's career winning percentage was exactly the same, .497.  Of course, everyone thinks of Bochy as a first-ballot Hall of Fame manager, while Kapler is a dumpster fire.

And yes...I'd much rather see Bart, Corry, Ramos, Luciano and Bishop play -- in fact, I'd rather see anyone play other than their current catchers or shortstops.  Flores is great at bat but scary in the field.  I wonder if that's how SMOE (Smartest Man On Earth) #1 Farhan or SMOE #2 Kapler envisioned the "versatility", by having players in less-than-familiar positions.

That "smartest guy in the room" syndrome is the bane of my existence, btw.

Garcia, Watson, Cahill have ERAs under 1.60.  Menez and Selman are in the 2-3 ERA range.  Smyly and Webb are between 3.00 and 4.00.  The other 14 are 4.21 or worse.

RE: Gabe Kapler might be . . . - Phogge - 08-19-2020

I envision a rotation two years down the road packed with young guys. They need to develop a lights out closer since none of the clowns in the pen are worthy. Menez is intriguing but as a starter. I like Webb. Haven’t seen Corry (nobody has) but the eyes on at A ball last year were glowing. The big guy Jelly, who knows.

What pisses me off the most is when a reliever comes in and can’t locate. It is not rocket science to pitch to spots. It’s listening and doing. The kid pitchers are missing the best part of Posey.

All that said I hope Mick’s litany of hitters pans out in two years. If not, ouch!

But they have Coconuts in the dugout. Shanahan and Kerr he is not.

I'm STILL peeved at Bochy for pulling Moore in Game 6 against the Cubs (could not care less that the guy had thrown 120 pitches . . . he was dealing and Cubs were reeling).  At least let him start the 9th and see what he's got.

But, Bochy did win 3 WS titles with the Giants - were the Giants the best team in baseball in any of those years?  (Were they even Top 3?).

Kapler has won . . . nothing.

But it's not the W/Ls, per se, but it's just making stupid ass decisions that cost your team the best chance to win.  That is where Kapler has been an epic fail so far, at least to these eyes.  I can think of 4 Ls that could/should easily be Ws for the Giants.  Yeah, they're not a great team.  Far from it.  But if they were sitting at .500 now, then we would all have a lot different outlook on the rest of the season.

P.S.  To Lex, for the 8th and 9th, when you had Watson and Shaun Anderson, why not Watson and . . . Watson?  A brobdingnagian pet peeve of mine: pitcher mows down hitters in the 8th, but manager knee-jerk-pulls him in the ninth.  That is especially inexcusable this year for the Giants, who are flailing away for pen duties.  There is no reason a guy who rolls 1-2-3 in the 8th can't come back out in the ninth (unless there are pitch count concerns, perhaps cumulative).
