Just announced, Big Ten cancelled the 2020 football season. Probably just the first domino to fall.

Cancelled or postponed?
They have to try for the spring, don't they?

Remember, "push, push, hope".
The plan will be to postpone football until the spring. If conditions improve by then (and really, if a vaccine is approved and available), we will see spring football. If not expect a similar meeting shortly before the spring schedule is about to start saying they have to cancel. Maybe they will play two seasons in the fall of 2021.

Emergency messages posted everywhere by the governors of the states of Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Florida asking for every psychiatrist in the United States to immediately come to their areas to treat hundreds of thousands experiencing lunacy attributed to canceling football.
The best news is that Stanford won’t have to face Slovis, Thompson-Robinson, the Domer QB and especially Garbers.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that article you are siting is from the 8th, but this one (same source) is updated today saying the season is cancelled.

I'll be honest I thought they would just postpone till the Spring, in hopes that the vaccine is a game changer.

Alright now from what I'm reading, that most recent article might not be correct, one Big Ten AD already disputing that they've made that decision now.

Quote:The “Hail Mary” began with a GroupMe DM. Clemson running back Darien Rencher sent it Sunday night. Stanford defensive end Dylan Boles received it. Trevor Lawrence soon joined them on a FaceTime call. And before long, with college football season creaking toward collapse, they’d convened the most star-studded Zoom meeting in the sport.
Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields? Present.
Alabama running back Najee Harris? Check.
Oregon lineman Penei Sewell? On board.
Oklahoma State running back Chuba Hubbard? Yep.
A dozen players gathered because they, like hundreds of college athletes who spoke up over the weekend, want to play football in 2020.

Unclear if the season cancelling is a done deal or not, but I think Harbaugh and others are making some valid points. Cancelling the season is not likely going to help anything and could be a lot worse. I truly believe that these thousands of college football players are safer in the structured environment of a college football season with regular testing, discipline and peer pressure to stay safe than they will be on their own without a college football season. Sure there would be players that would test positive if there were a season, but I think a lot more will test positive without a season. The stats are playing that out in most programs. Positive tests were high upon arrival to campus with many of these players coming from their hometowns. Once they are on campus and in workouts, the positivity rate has been very low and contact tracing is very possible. Cancelling the season may be the right decision for moral and public perception reasons, but I don't believe the players will be safer.

That strikes me as intuitively correct (if not obvious). But but few acknowledge that, for whatever reason (another Covid reporting mystery).
P.S. Stanford football as a .500 program is now done. Even if there is a spring season, Mills, Adebo (and perhaps others NFL bound) will not play. And this fall (with uber-talent Mills at QB) was Stanford's best chance in foreseeable future to be .500 or above. The run down of the program by Shaw, with the negligent acquiescence (at best) of Bernard Muir, is almost complete! Good job, guys . . .

Why are you so sure that Mills and Adebo wouldn't play in the Spring? Mills doesn't have much film to show the NFL, while Adebo has to prove he's no longer susceptible to being burned by a double move. A spring season is perhaps their best chance to showcase themselves for the NFL. Little, I think, is the only guy who can plausibly go pro without playing in the spring, and even he would benefit from a season to show he's recovered from his injuries. There's a reason they came back in the first place.

outbound talent (Mills, Little, Adebo etc) is not being replaced by equal/better incoming talent. new punter could be good though and punter is a key part of Shaw's offensive schemes.

While positivity rates possibly have been low for players since arriving (honestly, I don't think a majority of schools have been open about what data they're sharing), the players also haven't been engaging in the sort of close contact that (typically) comes with a full-pads practice.
I can't say 100% that you are wrong about what would be safer for players in the aggregate, but it's certainly possible even with a season cancelled for universities to provide a decent amount of resources to players on campus to help reduce their risk of getting covid.
Things like healthy box meals (possibly delivered), express testing, reconfigured social/study areas, etc. aren't necessarily tied to having a season or not.

Uber talented? Hasn't proved a thing. Lawrence, Fields, Slovis more impressive. Coming off multiple knee injuries. Perhaps down the road but why would you risk a high draft choice on him.
Not so sure he is gone but Little and Adebo are. Little should have come out last year.

The NFL Draft would obviously be pushed back to accommodate a later college football season. That'd mean a draft shortly after the CFP and right before training camp. Lots of rookies will get serious injuries that next NFL season without any time for recovery. Players who would clearly be first or second round draft picks would be wise to opt out of a spring season. I assume about 90 of the best college football players who believe they'll get drafted high enough will sit it out. Assuming of course that college football gets played in the spring.
--
Even those not slotted to go in the first couple of rounds might want to sit it out. Do you want to try to make the team as a late round pick while you're still beat up from the season, or should you just rest up, train up, and go into camp fresh so you can compete? Better to be on the team than to not make it through cuts.

I think players
may be safer during a full blown season with lots of testing than without because it is essentially a full time job. However, college football is a year round endeavor and even when the players are not allowed to receive official coaching, they are in often in daily contact with their trainers, their tutors, and others from the athletic department. Adding robust testing and insistence on following safety protocols to that equation should make a non-football period just as safe or safer, especially if a school is primarily using distance learning. I know robust testing is tough to get in this country but, if they can do it for a football season, they can do it without football. Stanford graduate students are asking for increased testing and safety protocols already. I think that Stanford and the PAC 12 should increase their own internal testing capacity and protocols for all students and staff to show leadership in this area rather than following along with the way things are usually done. That sort of leadership is sorely missing in this crisis and the students are getting together to try to fill the void.
Cheers,
Pete F.
