WBB: Effects of a non-season - 81alum - 07-29-2020

Assuming (as seems increasingly justifiable) there will not be a WBB 20-21 season, what will be the effects on 21-22?

One possibility is that Stanford will be hurt the most, since the value of the degree is so high that students who can graduate and move on will, as opposed to delaying graduation to finish their eligibility.  Anna Wilson, Alyssa Jerome, Maya Dodson, and Kiana Williams will all have to decide whether to graduate and move on or spend 5 (6) years on the farm.  Those who don't have a future in basketball will graduate, I would think.  Those that do will have to decide if an extra year at Stanford will help their careers or not.

All that is 1) assuming that everyone is granted a redshirt for the missing season, and 2) assuming that the number of scholarships is temporarily increased,  and 3) assuming that Stanford has the finances to pay for 25% more athletic scholarships for a year.

Losing Kiana Williams would be a major blow to the team, but who can say whether she would be content to spend 5 years earning her degree?  And how bittersweet for Anna Wilson, who would need to stick around for a 6th year to complete her eligibility?

If, however, there is a partial season, it could be even worse.  After all of their injuries and partial seasons already, Anna and Maya playing a fraction of a season in their final year would be bittersweet.  Kiana and Alyssa have played 3 solid years each, at least, but playing your penultimate season as a pale reflection of a real season would not be easy either.

On the other hand, a completely cancelled season is exactly what Oregon State needs.  Getting an extra year to rebuild the team will give them a little breathing room after the terrible attrition they have suffered recently.  And Oregon has superb but very inexperienced talent.  This year would have been the year we had a big advantage over them, 21-22 will be more even, I think.

The pandemic is what the pandemic is, and I think the season should be scrubbed.  But we will be losing a year in which we would have been favored to win the Pac 12, and that makes me sad.

Depending how the NBA goes and fall college sports go, it's hard to believe they won't try to start a season in January. They could play through April if they can't start January 1.

I think it’s way too early to think no basketball men or women.

Tomorrow the Pac-12 is due to release the football schedule and maybe other sports.

RE: WBB: Effects of a non-season - 81alum - 07-30-2020

I am not sure whether to hope the optimism about a spring season is justified, or not.  My instinct tells me there won't be college sports until there is an effective, widely distributed vaccine, and even the most wild optimists don't think we can inoculate 70% of the country in time for Spring.  Those notions of a spring season seemed more reasonable last spring, when we thought we might get a handle on the virus early.  I know I have been told to expect to teach my college classes online for the entire academic year, and that isn't even controversial among my colleagues, who are relieved we won't be forced to play Russian roulette every time we step into a classroom.

But set aside whether I am right or wrong about a completely cancelled season.  The question remains:  who would stand to benefit and who would stand to lose the most from a cancelled season?  I think Oregon State has the most to gain and we probably have the most to lose from cancellation. How would other teams fare?  Who in the Pac 12 is most top heavy with seniors?

UCLA would lose out on a fabulous season with Oyenwere, and Arizona would lose out on what could be a special swan song for Aari McDonald. Those are who immediately come to mind. Beyond that, I think the rest of the PAC is fairly young or in the process of a rebuild.

I’m sure we will play. Be patient

I have doubts about college sports starting up early next year.  December is going to have people traveling, getting together, and shopping at malls in states that allow it.  I expect at least a mini-surge of Covid-19 in January.

The country has to be more accepting about being inconvenienced in following Covid-19 precautions.
