Sleep easy, William Dement -

I never took “Sleep and Dreams”, but it was a legendary course. Nice obituary in the Economist.

Nice mention of Stanford, too.
Quote: There seemed nothing much wrong with Stanford, as far as William Dement could see. To someone like him, who had left New York in January 1963 with his car buried in snow, this university—with its palms, its Spanish-colonial buildings and its skies of unbroken blue—looked like paradise. He and his wife strolled about and ate ice creams, in January, in a state of wonder
Rest In Peace.

Yes, sleep in heavenly peace. While Sleep & Dreams was not the most rigorous class I took at Stanford, it was easily the most memorable: for extra credit, my friends and I engaged in a "sleep protest" at the corner of Embarcadero and El Camino outside Town & Country, where we waved signs telling drivers to get more sleep and not drive drowsy. And I can't remember what was involved, but there was a way to win the opportunity to get a ride in his golf cart on the way to class, and I fondly recall that on my winning ride Dr. Dement told me his three-minute version of how to lead a good life.
Other than Intro to Wine Tasting at French House, his was also easily the most useful "life lessons" course I took at Stanford, too. What a good guy.
