Stanford statements re: George Floyd -

David Shaw where are you?
Jerod Haase where are you?
Bernard Muir where are you?
It seems like other coaches in the Pac 12 now how to speak up but ours do not:
https://247sports.com/college/washington/Article/Washington-Huskies-UW-Football-head-coach-Jimmy-Lake-issues-statement-on-the-death-of-George-Floyd-147676046/
Even the Cal Head Coach spoke up:

These coaches get multimillion dollar salaries on the backs of young men that look a lot like George Floyd and they have nothing to say?
Even the Chancellor at UC Berkeley and the President of the UC system had something to say and we are there twiddling our thumbs.
Shame on you Stanford!

Kevin Sumlin certainly made a powerful statement. Of course, nobody on the Cardboard had the stones to start a thread about the Floyd disaster either. I’m usually one who has no problem talking about potentially uncomfortable issues, as evidenced by the fact I started the Covid-19 discussion on this board, but have been sort of testing the board to see how long it would take before some one else did.
The “stick to sports” mentality is partly why we are in the mess we are in, IMHO.

Simone Manuel and some of her friends had something to say...

Jared Haase held a zoom call with his team to discuss and posted.

FWIW, this is also kind of outside the CardBoard's usual purview. Our COVID-19 forum is an exception given the exceptional circumstances of the pandemic. So it's not about "having the stones" to discuss it - it's about the fact that I think we all recognize that, however important this may be, the CardBoard isn't the right forum for it.

Amen 2006. If he wants discussion he can always go to TOS for both sides of any issue, discussed with angst, passion and every now and then a little humor.
The Cardboard is a pleasant oasis.

Both sides? Phogge that was too funny.
Certainly agree with 2006.

Agree as well with 2006, and, no offense to OF, but the vast majority of my waking hours I am dealing with reality. Without the few diversions I get with my family plus this stick-to-sports oasis I would lose whatever sanity I have left.

A tragedy if people in comfort go insane because they can't get a respite from odious reality? Just consider the merit of not being able to escape as motivation to make reality something from which we don't need to seek refuge.

It's unlikely our conversations on the CardBoard are going to change anything. But regardless, thems the rules around here. It's not a public forum, and we all converse at the pleasure and good graces of our Admins. Closing this thread now. Thanks.

I don't understand why the George Floyd posting is now closed. Is the board administration unwilling to discuss this critical issue or allow posters to discuss it? I certainly think the reason we have not heard from coaches is that the University administration for whom I have little use, have probably dictated they stay quiet. Nothing else makes sense, so why should posters here stay quiet if they have something to say about this?
RE: George Floyd -
2006alum - 06-01-2020
Closed the thread because this has nothing
specific to do with Stanford sports. There are all manner of issues that the Administration could or should (and sometimes has) spoken out about, such as divestment (both climate and Middle East-related), labor relations with cafeteria workers and janitorial staff, and free speech on campuses. Be that as it may, all of those issues are political, and our board rules are to steer clear of political discussions that are not inherent to Stanford (i.e., the Brock Turner trial, the Theranos fraud, the admissions scandals involving prospective Stanford applicants, parents, and coaches, etc.).
And yes - the board rules are no politics. We bent that a bit in the COVID-19 forum, but we are drawing clear lines in this forum, as we have for years now.

Recruiting Challenges for Football -
doubledub - 06-02-2020
I wonder if we will suffer adverse recruiting because our football coach won't address the George Floyd issue. Please do not say again that this is not about sports when most football coaches in America are addressing it.
And why make an exception for Covid19 but not for this? Is it really so uncomfortable? Oh how I wish I knew what it is like to be white so that I could just so easily look the other way and go about my life as if nothing happened, with a click of the topic closed switch because "them the rules." Who made the rules? They can't change? The thirteenth amendment was a "rule" too...
Fake news on the Cardboard -
BobK - 06-02-2020
Now two posters have posted fake news about the supposed silence of Stanford coaches an athletes.
Many many Stanford coaches and Stanford teams have posted thoughts much like Muir’s
https://gostanford.com/news/2020/6/1/an-open-letter-to-the-stanford-athletics-family.aspx
They have not been silent at all and it bugs me man :) that supposed Stanford fans believe this or maybe wish to strike a fire
Akiddoc was able to post the Muir statement and I thank you
2006 it’s all yours. Thank you

On the brighter side Mark McGwire hit five homers to lead the SoCal All Stars over the North four games to three in the I 5 Series in the Chronicle. A form of card and dice baseball that Bobbbbbbb and I played as kids.

Thanks all. Have combined all threads, retitled the main thread, and am keeping this puppy closed now that we know that Stanford officials have responded.
