Niners trivia - Phogge - 05-29-2020

Who were the members of the “Million Dollar Backfield?”

The members of the “Alphabet Backfield?”

RE: Niners trivia - BobK - 05-29-2020

Easy but I’ll let others answer

RE: Niners trivia - Phogge - 05-29-2020

The NFL had a lottery for a bonus pick at the top of the draft in the 50’s. Bobby Garrett of Stanford was the pick of the Browns who had won multiple titles and then won the lottery. Who was the Niner’s bonus pick during that time?

RE: Niners trivia - BobK - 05-29-2020

Ah good one. A player from Georgia? Babcock? Something like that ?

RE: Niners trivia - Phogge - 05-29-2020

Harry Babcock

The Niners drafted John Brodie after the '56 season. A bit of a surprise considering their #1 pick in 1956. Who he? Bobbbbb has to wait.

RE: Niners trivia - BobK - 05-29-2020

Was I right ? With Babcock?

RE: Niners trivia - Phogge - 05-29-2020

Check the post above Bobbbbbbbb. Harry Babcock. You get the reward, a frozen Three Musketeers bar.

I thought you were just spelling Babcock’s name.

Michigan State

LOL I was 8 when they lost to Detroit back in the day and I think they had already traded John Henry before that season.

I vaguely recall that John Henry was a local guy, from the East Bay. I have no idea who his HD track coach was. Wild guess - Payton Jordan?

I remember John Henry ran really upright and carried the ball out in front of him a lot. I remember the TV announcer on the call: “John Henry Johnson, carrying that ball like a loaf of bread.”

Mostly B&W TV memories from those days - the Alley Oop to RC Owens, Ray Norton outrunning his blockers, Willie Mays roaming the vast wilderness of the LA Coliseum outfield....and then my childhood ended with McCovey’s line drive to Richardson.

RE: Niners trivia - Phogge - 05-29-2020

John Henry was from Pittsburg High. Track coach...Cornelious Warmerdam.

RE: Niners trivia - BobK - 05-29-2020

From Pittsburg HS to Fremont of Sunnyvale, Tom Cureton.

RE: Niners trivia - Phogge - 05-29-2020

Related to Hardimon of UCLA?

RE: Niners trivia - BobK - 05-29-2020

Probably not. Qwerty and I went to Fremont but I didn’t now this until my brother the track guy told me recently

RE: Niners trivia - Phogge - 05-29-2020

Hardimon Cureton one of the mainstays of the National Champs in 1954. UCLA 72 Stanford 0.

RE: Niners trivia - qwerty49 - 05-30-2020

LOL by the time I got to HS Coach Cureton didn’t look like he’d run very much. Pretty ironic when the X-country guys would be running by with their tongues hanging out and he’d be yelling at them to keep their arms moving.

RE: Niners trivia - BobK - 05-30-2020

Since no one got the top draft pick in 1955 it was QB Earl Morrall All American from Michigan State

49ers have had three overall first picks in the draft Babcock and who were the other 2?

RE: Niners trivia - Phogge - 05-30-2020

Easy. I’ll wait for a bit.

Hint: Babcock first, second was on offense and the answer to a question of who was first in a TV way? Third was a big mistake.

RE: Niners trivia - BobK - 05-30-2020

Disagree on the 3rd being a big mistake.

Hmmm a TV way???

3rd also an answer to a great trivia question with him and another athlete
