Reopening Restaurants - Goose - 05-02-2020

I found this article to be very interesting. Some good news, mostly bad news.

Some idea about what will happen in the Bay Area.

Actually, your title was probably better. I was more interested in the comments regarding the number of places that did not expect to reopen at all in 2020. I enjoy going to good restaurants. Actually, in many cases, I like what would be considered "average" restaurants., like Town. Not having them around is not a thing I look forward to.

RE: Reopening Restaurants - BostonCard - 05-02-2020

For what it is worth, we are actually eating restaurant food (take out) more often than we used to.  We definitely ate out very infrequently (less than once a month on average, though I often had catered lunches at work).  Now, we've made it a point of getting take out at least once a week, and this last week we've gotten takeout three times (sushi, pizza, and Israeli).

Finally took the chance and had sushi this week.  Was worried about freshness and of course lack of heat.  So far so good.

Pizza, i get once a week or so. Figure that's oven to box.  Pretty safe.
And had Chinese a couple of times.

Nothing else so far.  Which is the polar opposite of usual.

Same.  It's the only "dining out" experience we have.  500 degrees to cardboard box to our pizza dish to oven to plate.  Masks and gloves everywhere.  Seems safe.

Tangent topic, but I liked Newsom's proposal for restaurants to provide food to senior citizens in facilities during the lockdown, with $16 reimbursement for breakfast, $17 for lunch and $28 per dinner (delivery included). Helps the restaurants, helps the senior citizens ineligible for other programs.

Anyone know the status of the program?

just ramping up

Quote:On April 24, 2020, Governor Gavin Newsom announced the launch of a first-in-the-nation “Great Plates Delivered” program, a meal delivery service for California’s older adults.

Great Plates Delivered has two purposes:

  1. Help seniors and other adults at high risk from COVID-19 to stay home and stay healthy by delivering three nutritious meals a day, and

  2. Provide essential economic stimulus to local businesses struggling to stay afloat during the COVID-19 crisis.
Local programs are getting set up rapidly.

The current due date for accepting Letters of Intent to participate is Monday, May 4th, at noon.

Income limit is 600% of Federal poverty limit (apparently about $77K for a single senior and $104K for a couple)

5.7 million senior citizens in California.

Any idea how the restaurants are responding to the concept?  Also, is FEMA proposing to end the support in a week?

https://abcnews.go.com/Health/wireStory/money-meals-california-seniors-end-weeks-70396413

And most cities and counties were caught off-guard.  Seemed like a good program to me.  Feed the elderly, save a restaurant.

Quote:How long will the program run? The program runs until May 10, 2020, which is the timeframe currently approved by FEMA. The state intends on requesting an extension for the Great Plates Delivered program.

RE: Reopening Restaurants - fullmetal - 05-03-2020

Subsidizing restaurant operations is an excellent idea that will enable commercial food suppliers to start moving inventory again (and also solve the political eyesore of food waste).  Every state should be pursuing this idea.

RE: Reopening Restaurants - OutsiderFan - 05-04-2020

Yes, if the Fed can buy MBS, junk bonds, unlimited treasury notes to give treasury money for massive industry bailouts, and lend money directly to public companies for 0% interest, states can ABSOLUTELY subsidize restaurant business to feed vulnerable people so they can stay inside. Of course, they are gonna need help from the federal government that can get those unlimited Fed funds to do it.

If you ever wanted to see the Moral Hazard experiment run at scale, we are the Guinea Pigs.

All the residents in household have to be eligible. No meals for grannies in multi-generational households or couples where one is younger. Also no meals for anyone on other food assistance.
