An old catcher trying to catch a ball dropped by a plane

Name will come soon. Lol

Didn't Casey Stengel do that, or attempt to do that, too...when he played for the Dodgers. I thought I read that as a kid.

Edit: Well, here's the story...and Casey was involved, just not in the way I thought.

I think Phogge has a different catcher and he once played for the Seals. And since World's Fair was the heading now thinking the ball was dropped from a blimp but still can't think of the catcher's name.

Was it Joe Sprinz?

RE: World's Fair trivia - Phogge - 04-26-2020

Yep. Sprinz failed to catch four balls dropped from a blimp. On the fifth his glove made contact and glove and ball sprang back into his face breaking several facial bones and his nose. He was knocked unconscious. He was not credited with the catch.

I used to see Old Joe at SF Baseball Oldtimer dinners. For our July meeting we brought our kids and grandkids and Joe would hand out gloves, balls and bats. He’s gone now.
