Peer Pressure Social Distancing Needed - OutsiderFan - 03-22-2020

After being unable to get groceries delivered, the woman of the house went shopping at Whole Foods this morning with surgical mask on face. Some protection is better than nothing, because even if they aren't 100% effective at keeping out virus particles, they can reduce viral load, giving your body less virus to fight off, decreasing chances of virus getting a foothold.

When entering the store she heard a store attendant say "no pushing and shoving like yesterday." How can you have appropriate distance when you are close enough to get your hands on someone? Speaking of this, she also saw people crammed together in the produce section and told them "six feet" and the two women on either side looked at her like she was crazy. At the checkouts it was the same thing. The isolating you are doing at home can be totally undone by cramming into others at the grocery store.

So, Cardboarders, I implore you to tell people to keep 6 ft. of distance whenever you see violations of this International Law, until it is repealed. Let's put some peer pressure on people to conform!

Went to my local Round Table Pizza yesterday.  Called in the order, they told me to wait out back, 10-4, understood.  Guy comes out with a pizza, has his surgical gloves on.  Starts to approach the driver's side window, I ask him to go to the passenger window.  I take the pizza, he gives me the receipt to sign.  I sign the receipt, look up, and he's gone back around to the driver's side, one foot from my face.  
Sigh.

Unfortunately there are a whole lot of people who don't get it. I guess some of it is, dare I say it, they are just stupid. They really don't understand that there are no exceptions and no free passes because you need a signature. Even more unfortunately, there are plenty of people who aren't stupid who simply refuse to believe that the rules apply to them. On Saturday, there were many people (much more than usual) out riding bikes. Great, they need some time in the sun and want to relax a bit. Some are family units riding close to each other. No problem, they live together anyway. Then there all the piles and piles of bike riders riding in packs a foot apart gabbing away. For sure NOT family units. You see groups and individuals that have good spacing pull up to a light. Spacing goes to zero. Do these people think that by definition all other bike riders are healthy and immune? I guess that must be it. I must have missed the part about that in the regulations.

Thankfully on the North Side here in Chicago from the narrow slice of things I've seen people have been good. Keeping space, in grocery stores too. Trader Joe's seems especially well-organized.

WF here in Novato (Marin Co) was doing so this morning - inside, the # of staff fulfilling on-line orders outnumbered general public shoppers ~ 2-1. People by and large self-enforcing a 6' distance between each other.

Our TJ has been controlling shopper inflow since ~ last Monday. They even got their sign person to do chalk drawings to remind/inform customers of the recommended 6' separation space on the sidewalk out front.  The volume of goods purchased seems to have settled back to the "normal" 2-3 bag/person level.

Beautiful day out - we feel lucky living in a rural area where we can easily de-stress by heading out to the back 40.

I had heard that Whole Foods was doing all the right things, so I stopped in on a bike ride yesterday just to see what it was like (and kill time before a bar I wanted to support opened). It's was like OF's post. A dude was standing literally in the middle of the doors in, making entry impossible. People were jammed together in the produce section. No attempts to maintain order by staff or anyone in a uniform. I went 20' into the store and turned around and left.

At this point I think we're going to try the "place an order before 6:30am" strategy. I'm up anyway, and I've yet to find a place taking this seriously. Although supposedly another family grocer up the street from me is, so I'll try them next I guess.

I think the lack of cases in Oakland is making people lax. The fact that community spread is established in Berkeley doesn't seem to matter. I feel like it's going to absolutely explode here soon.
