WBB attendance - BostonCard - 03-05-2020

https://www.wsj.com/articles/attendance-at-womens-college-basketball-games-is-surging-11583421714

The article might be behind a paywall, but it notes rising popularity of women's college basketball, with attention on the effect of the "once-in-a-generation guard Sabrina Ionescu."

Stanford is mentioned as well:

Quote:Oregon is not the only Pac-12 school whose women’s basketball team has seen a significant surge in popularity. At No. 14 Oregon State, the women’s team accounts for 60% of total attendance, adjusted for the number of games, according to NCAA data, up from 48% in 2016-17. Ditto at unranked California, where women’s basketball attendance has grown from 19% four years ago to 31% of the total in the 2019-20 season. At No. 7 Stanford, the share of women’s attendance dipped from 45% in 2016-17 to 38% the following season and is back up to 48% in 2019-20.

Also talks about the salutatory effects of some parity on WBB:

Quote:Today there are a handful of programs that could rightly be considered to be on equal footing with UConn, including Baylor, Notre Dame, Oregon, Mississippi State and South Carolina [ed: but not Stanford? :(]. Of the teams ranked in the top 10, not one is undefeated. Within the top 25 there are 12 teams with three losses or fewer, including No. 6 UConn who has lost to Baylor, Oregon and South Carolina.

Love to see that. I was planning to do this once we get into the off-season, but I'd love to start a thread to get folks' thoughts on how they became WCBB fans, either just of Stanford, or of the sport in general. I'd be curious to know more about what brings fans into the game. And I've been an unapologetic fan of Ionescu from day one for precisely that reason - moreso than anyone since Diana Taurasi, she is bringing in new fans to the sport, and serving as a role model for the next generation of female athletes.

I think the reason Stanford was omitted is that every other team mentioned but Oregon has either recently won a national title or been in multiple title games. It's hard to understate how quickly teams fall off the radar if they aren't in the Final Four or title game for a few seasons. Also, it's worth noting how poorly we've performed in just about all of our nationally televised games for the past few seasons -- I think our only really notable win on ESPN since our last Final Four run was our PAC-12 Tournament title over Oregon last season.
