Men's BB vs. San Diego at noon - bl82 - 12-21-2019

Not a peep about the San Diego game that tips off in two minutes? Are we so confident in this year's team that it isn't even worth mentioning that we still have a good deal of post-finals rust, still need to check in on the health of Tyrell Terry and still need to make sure we don't look ahead to Kansas?

San Diego does not look like a tough opponent, but if they get hot from three (Calcaterra perhaps) or if Terry is not 100%, things can certainly go wrong.

We need every game to pad our OOC record and improve our chances for the dance and a good seed.

Also, I think it's time for Delaire to have a monster game or Wills to hit a couple of threes. We need more productivity from Kisunas, Keefe and White too.

Terry is back and looks fine. San Diego is shooting the lights out an we look a little less sharp and quick than we did in previous (non-USF) games. Way too many TOs, including lots of errant passes. Also lots of settling for perimeter jumpers. Sam Beskind with some meaningful minutes. I'm not sure who this was supposed to send a message to, but we are sluggish and down 19-12 about halfway through the first half.

We now have an insurmountable two point lead at halftime.

12 turnovers in the first 23 minutes.
Stanford up 4

I'm watching :)  So fluid on offense.  Top team in the Pac 12 on defense, apparently.  So far, anyway.

I'm keeping track by the stats. Hard to get excited about this particular game, although I'm extremely happy this season to see us playing well as a TEAM on both ends of the floor. Also excited about the freshmen, especially Terry. Glad to see that he is back.

Hope that the comeback in this game means that we are starting to shake off the rust.

Stanford up 11 just under 2 to play. A very strong 2nd half on D.

58-47 with about 2 minutes to go.  At one point we were down 8 points (24-16).  Since then, we have outscored the 42-23.  Da Silva has 19 points, Terry has 18.

The bad news:

Our bench production: 2 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist, 5 turnovers, 3 personal fouls.

To say we are not a deep team is an understatement.

Our next opponent, number 1 Kansas, lost to Villanova 56-55.  Maybe this was a trap game for them, and they were looking ahead to the Stanford game.

BC

Well, that was a messy end of game.  The final was 62-59, as we let San Diego score 6 points in the last 13 seconds (layup, turnover, foul on a three point shot, they make two free throws, miss the third intentionally, recover the rebound and score a layup).  Yuck.

still as sloppy as it was 11-1 now. Or a win is a win is a win.

Ron Thomsic played in the first game I saw. I went to Hank Luisetti’s camp twice so thank you Bill Walton for giving them their due

Yeah, big picture we are in about as good of a place as could have been reasonably hoped for at the start of the season.  Big test coming up against Kansas, and then the Pac-12 season.  Given where the Pac-12 has been, would a 12-6 record in conference plus a win in the conference championship be enough?  I still think NIT is the most likely destination, but I am hopeful for a ticket to the dance.

The defense continues to look good (last few seconds of this game excepted).  But the offense is a trainwreck.  Our last 3 games, we've turned the ball over on 25%, 27%, and 27% of possessions.  And that was against mediocre to bad teams.  To put that in perspective, only 1 team in D-I has a season turnover rate over 27%.  So, I'm sure Haase knows what we need to work on.  Hopefully he can right the ship before next weekend.

No doubt that turnovers are the biggest issue for this team to sort out. The good news is that the team seemed to have cut down on them up until the last few games. So, my guess is they can get back to not turning over the ball at a high clip. If they do so, we have a great shot at getting to the tourney.

Bigger picture, the one thing that I think will hold this team back from being a legit force this year a - top 15 type of team - is the severe lack of scoring from our bench. I suspect that this issue will rear its head in a few games that we'd otherwise win. Luckily, it looks like we bring in a couple good shooters next season plus a low post guy who looks like he might provide a little scoring too. If next year's freshmen can contribute offensively early - while playing solid D - then I imagine we'd have a real shot at competing for the conference title.

RE: Men's BB vs. San Diego at noon - BobK - 12-21-2019

Extremely encouraging that we are now thinking NCAA and Better still top 15.
Stanford had the top NET on the Pac 12 this morning. The old RPI

Turnovers today were bad. Our depth after losing KZ and Ryan is poor. Hope to see threes from White and big improvement from Delaire

After Kansas we play cal, Washington and Washington State at home
