5th Year Decision Thread - SamuelMcF - 12-10-2019

Per BC's suggestion, I'll be keeping this list updated as we see more decisions from the eligible seniors. One thing to keep in mind is this year's team had an underwhelming THREE 5th-year seniors on it and 6th-year IBS. Lowest number in the Shaw era.

INTRODUCED ON SENIOR DAY:

Significant contributors/hope to have back
Swann (portal)
Williams (portal)
Pryts (portal - returning)
Costello (portal)
Schaffer (portal - returning)

Some contribution/leaving might make sense
Harrington (portal - returning)
Maddox

Congrats on your Stanford degree
Stewart (portal)
Richardson (portal)

NOT INTRODUCED ON SENIOR DAY:

Significant contributors/hope to have back
Antoine (returning)
Robinson (returning)
Hattis (portal - ASU)
J. Fox
Toner (though he did injure his kicking leg IIRC)
Hamilton (portal)

Some contribution/leaving might make sense
Powell (portal - Indiana)
Eboh (portal)
Speights (portal)

Congrats on your Stanford degree
Peek (portal - USF)
Butler
Parson?

RE: 5th Year Decision Thread - BostonCard - 12-10-2019

Remember that if Costello departed, behind Mills, who has not always been healthy, we would have a true freshman who has been out of football for two years and West.  There is no universe in which I wouldn’t welcome Costello back with open arms.

Also worth noting that Costello has not been right all season. A return to his 2018 form would be a substantial upgrade to the passing game (above even the 2019 version of Mills).  I might believe that Mills has more potential, but Costello has put together a more complete season.

Costello should go to Pullman. Put up big numbers, get drafted.

NOT INTRODUCED ON SENIOR DAY:

Significant contributors/hope to have back

Hatttis and Hamilton were not introduced on Senior Day.  They did join their class (as did Fox) for the mid-field photo with their classmates. Shaw was quoted as he expect Hamilton to participate in Spring practice.

Per TOS Hattis is in the portal.

Updated to include Hattis. I hope he recovers from what looked like an awful leg injury.

RE: 5th Year Decision Thread - cardcrimson - 12-12-2019

Jack Richardson into the portal. . . .

Congrats on your Stanford degree, Jack! (We're also recruiting younger brother Carl as a PWO, and this is probably the nail in the coffin there.)

RE: 5th Year Decision Thread - Langdude - 12-12-2019

As far as I can tell, and please correct me if I am wrong, the gravity of Richardson's value to the team, and the main impetus to his scholie award, was his service as the team's lone quarterback in spring 2018. Not saying he did not deserve it nor that I am not happy for him, but it seems that outside of that, he was not a contributor.

RE: 5th Year Decision Thread - Goose - 12-12-2019

Richardson has nothing to lose by going into the portal. He knows, and has probably known for quite a while, that he would not see the field in a serious way at Stanford. This way, he can see if he can get a year of grad school paid for and possibly compete for a starting job. Nothing says he has to actually do this, he may choose to just go get a job or pay his own way to school next year. No harm in seeing if there is an offer out there.

That's one way to look at it.  I kinda think that any kid who shows up at practice every day, exposes himself to potential injury, learns the playbook, helps the team prepare, works out in the off-season, travels to away games, dresses on Saturday mornings, is prepared to go into the game on a moment's notice, supports his teammates from the sidelines and shares the emotions of victory or defeat -- is a contributor, whether he earns a stat on the field or not.

Sorry, but "contributor" implies more to me than just actual playing time.

RE: 5th Year Decision Thread - SamuelMcF - 12-12-2019

Jack will always be The Man Who Saved Spring Ball to me, and he should feel extremely proud of the scholarship he was gifted as a result. Of course, he wasn't a significant on-field contributor, so this transfer is a surprise to nobody. He's a smart guy, so maybe an Ivy or a high-academic lower-level D1/FCS team like Rice or Georgetown? May as well see what offers are out there.

Not for nothing, I noticed that Obi Eboh picked up a new Twitter follower the other day: Washington State Football (@WSUCougarFB)

Well, of course. That's why I said "outside of that." So not sure why you are sorry.

By your own measure, and I agree with you, all walk-ons are contributors. Which is why I always report on their contributions after each game. But not all get scholarships. Those are reserved for those whose contributions are exceptional, like Jack two springs ago; again, I was happy for him, as I said. Just pointing out that I think we will be OK without him on Saturdays if he transfers.

RE: 5th Year Decision Thread - OutsiderFan - 12-12-2019

David Shaw sure is going to have a fun signing day presser next week. The only question reporters will ask is "why is everyone leaving your program early?" and variations of that.

I looked at some peer programs and Stanford has significantly more players in the transfer portal than any of them.  I think UCLA has 7. Stanford now has 11? That's insane. It seems reasonable to assume something unflattering to Stanford's football program is festering.

Hopefully Shaw isn't too defensive next week because the questions are coming.

I realize the portal was new last year, but this kind of attrition from Stanford is crazy bad. How to explain it other than toxic culture?  I assumed Hamilton was a certain starter next year, and Hattis had a real opportunity.  Add in Swann and Williams and both lines appear to be heading for the exit.

If everyone came back and were healthy next year, Stanford should be very good.  11 in the portal, even if a few a minimal losses, completely undermines the "40 year decision" mantra.

I appreciate the DL commitment today, but the PR problem right before Fall signing is just awful.
