WBB: Victoria Invitational Thurs Fri Sat - 81alum - 11-27-2019
I am not going to do a preview of the teams, but Malcolm over at the Fast Break Club has already done a great job looking over our likely competitors:

If we win out, all our games will be 7:30 pm, beginning with Cal Baptist on Thanksgiving evening. Syracuse and Mississippii State are superb teams and "winning out" is far from certain.
The only way to watch these games is online via a subscription to FloHoops. A one month subscription is $29.99 and can be cancelled, meaning it will cost $30 to watch three games. I haven't made up my mind if I will do that. Does anyone here have exerience with Flohoops? Is it a crappy feed or decent coverage?

A nice feature of FloSports is that the games are archived and you can watch them later, even games from before you signed up.

So I forked over my $30 to Flohoops. Watching the Louisville UT Arlington game in the Paradise Jam--now this is quite the tournament, with Louisville, Baylor, Oregon, etc. The feed is good and the commentary is not bad. It is not a scoreboard feed and it is not a silent feed. So far so good. Not sure if every game is done this well. At 11 we can see what the Victoria Invitational looks like. Mississippi State and Syracuse each have games before we do, so it might be worth peeking in.
Addendum:
The Victoria Invitation has started with a Bowling Green vs. Green Bay game which is on the opposite side of the bracket from us. The feed is clear--generally a full half court view with an occasional replay--before free throws so they don't overlap action. A single announcer gives a radio-like feed that seems OK in terms of content. He is certainly enthusiastic. However, his mike got annoyingly fuzzy a couple of minutes in--I hope they fix that. All in all, this is certainly superior to the scoreboard feeds that Maples supplies.
At 1:30 Mississippi State plays USF--that should be interesting to see if USF hangs with them as well as USF hung with us. And at 5:00 it is Syracuse vs. Houston. Syracuse is our likely opponent tomorrow. We have the final game today against Cal Baptist at 7:30.

Miss looks very good on defense, with three tall, lanky players and two speedy little guards who press and get back court steals.

Mississippi State is quite the defensive team. They lead 35-25 at the half. I hope we win a couple of games and get the chance to test them.
Meanwhile, Hebard put up 30 for Oregon today, 13/15 against Oklahoma State.

Mississippi State didn't allow USF to score a basket for 8:30 in the 3rd. Suffocating defense. Final MSU 75 USF 36. At least USF held them below their recent average of 125 points. SFS ran a very slow offense--almost a four corners all out offense. It slowed the game down some, but they could not score at the end of their long possessions.
If we get to play MSS it will be a tough game. Their posts could eat us up, and their three point shooting and defense is good too. USF with 22 turnovers to MSU with 10, says enough.
It seems that they are using the regular team announcers for the audio. It was the USF announcer who called this game.
The timekeeper was TERRIBLE. Quite often the clock did not start for 4-5 seconds into the possession, and it ran for 2-3 after a stoppage of play. Farcical.

They have not lost yet this season.Yes, they are 7-0, took them 2 overtimes to beat UCSB but they are a fundamentally sound team. No one over 6'1" so we should have an edge on defense and rebounding, but we shall see. They have some good three point shooting, so keeping a good perimeter defender on Taylor Wu will be important. They basically play 4 guards, so we might need to go small at times.

I watched the game and it was the exact same team we played. Where are people getting San Francisco State? They're a DII team.

That was my lapse. I know they were USF and yet my brain froze on that. My bad for confusing everyone. Corrected above.
Yes, they were the same team we played, and they hung with us a lot better than they did with Mississippi State. They used a very different strategy though--not sure why. And they were obviously not playing at home. Same online announcer as they had at their place.
Houston vs. Syracuse is underway. Syracuse looks like a very good team. Tall, athletic posts and a couple of very quick guards. They do some full court press, they shoot the three quite well. I can see how Syracuse hung with Oregon for 3 quarters.
Meanwhile, the scorekeeper is incompetent. There were three different scores--on the scoreboard, on the livefeed, and on the stat sheet--all different according to the announcer. So bad scorekeeping, bad timekeeping--I hope that does not bode ill for us later.
Houston has been keeping up with Syracuse. High scoring 1st quarter, Syracuse 25 Houston 23
Syracuse has been far from dominant over Houston. No one seems to know exactly what the score is at half. ESPN says it is Syracuse 46 Houston 40 at the half. But there are other scores in other places that don't agree by a point or two. What a mess. In any case, Syracuse seems quite balanced on offense. On defense it plays zone in the half court but sometimes presses on the full court. Houston, which is not a prolific three point shooting team, has made 7 treys already to keep the game close. They seem athletic, fast, rangy.

Well Syracuse pours it on in the 2nd half and wins going away. They had two excellent three point shooters but also did well enough from inside--four players in the mid teens. Defending four players is not exactly what Tara's scouting report defense is best at doing, so defense will be a challenge.
On defense, Syracuse wasn't very good in the first half but asserted themselves a bit better in the second. Their half court zone looked more like a 2-3 to me. Houston took a lot of mid court jumpers and treys from the wing to try to break though.
Now on to Cal Baptist....

We start against Cal Baptist in a few minutes. I'm curious to see if Dodson plays. Cal Baptist is undefeated against lesser competition, and is remarkably balanced on offense. 4 players average in double figures, and 4 more score 8 or 9 ppg. It is offense by committee, which is what you want to make Tara's scouting report defense more difficult.
That said, Lexy Ram and Taylor Wu are hitting a lot of treys at about 40%, so perimeter defense on them is critical. Their leading scorer is 6'1" Caitlin Harper, so Prechtel or Belibi will have a chance to defend her.
I sense that this could be a good game for Prechtel or Belibi, who will have height or athleticism advantages over the smaller Cal Baptist team.

A few random observations as the game is about to begin:
DiJonai is in sweats and will not play tonight. She is distributing the ball in warmups, so she doesn’t seem to have a major injury. Maybe her injury explains why she seemed flat in the last couple of games.
Dodson and Brewer are still out, with Maya still wearing a boot.
Cal-Baptist player all seem to be 5’8”, but others have not treated them seriously and got stung.
More as the Tournament continues.
