Mills’ last performance produced the high point of our season so far, and I’m excited to see how he does now.

Hopefully he makes it through 4 quarters. He’s talented, no doubt. Makes the game more interesting.

Hey, Mills is a baller. He's just fragile.

Game day weather forecast is mostly cloudy and a high of 51 F. Winds SSE at 5 to 10 mph. That's not bad at all.

Yep, hopefully he can a) stay healthy and b) put a lot of points on the board.
I'm afraid with our depleted defense and Wazzu's Air Raid (which we haven't had much luck stopping over the last four years) he is going to need to.

And let’s not forget Wazzu’s defense is a real sieve which gets even worse when the players mail it in like they did in the 2nd half vs UCLA and Kal.
Could be a real shootout if Mills can hang in there.

I hope we run, run, run...with great success, of course. We need to keep the ball for a long time on each drive and score TDs. Hopefully, this will keep Mills semi-healthy for the remainder of the season and result in a low-scoring win.

+1. Cal had good success running the ball, with unexpected passes mixed in. That is the formula for success. Hopefully, the OL has been practicing against a front that shifts and stems a lot, so they will be ready for what WSU will do. Cal had great success by snapping the ball while WSU was moving. If we can exploit that, it will really help. We should be better at running the ball than Cal, I would hope.

Was an injury the reason Mills has not played during the past few games? If so, what was the injury ?

The OL played a team recently whose DL moved a lot pre-snap - UCLA. It did not go well for Stanford. We will find out Saturday how much they learned from that experience.
SF Cardinal Fan - Stanford does not publicly disclose specific injury details. Perhaps they view this as information that an opponent could exploit. But it is generally believe that Mills injured his calf. He had a bag of ice taped around the back of his calf near the knee at the end of the UW game.

Thanks for the information:)
I did not watch Mills most recent start (Washington) , but I saw the entire Oregon State game and thought Mills play was exceptionally good. I like the way he sees and the field and his throwing technique seems to produce perfect spirals (which I expect the receivers appreciate).

I was out of town last week and didn't get to see the game. Is Costello hurt? Or does Shaw just prefer Mills now?

Quote:"Costello, who has missed three and a half games this season, hasn't practiced this week.
Junior backup Davis Mills returned to practice last week and could have played against Colorado."

The UCLA defense did move around a lot. They also blitzed essentially on every play, which so far WSU has not done. I agree it is critical that the OL handle the movement. We have had trouble with this motion for the last three years. Last year, WSU came out in cover three (without the safety coming down, in most cases), and Shaw went full aerial attack and eventually WSU switched to running cover two. Shaw said he had been too conservative against WSU in the past. While that is probably true, the fact we couldn't run a lick on anybody in 2018 probably also factored into it. We did run a bit more against the cover two, and we made some yards. Problem was, the DL often got too much penetration before the play got started. We can't have that on Saturday, or it will be a long day.
This year, with Fisk out, I would expect (hope?) to see some two back sets. I think that going under center with a fullback could help us, as WSU doesn't see a lot of that, and we haven't done a lot of that recently. It would be interesting to see Scarlett as a fullback once or twice, I think. Fake to the other back and throw to Scarlett could be effective. Certainly not something WSU has seen us do.

This is exactly what people said about Matthew Stafford during his first 2 NFL seasons. Fortunately (now unfortunately), he just ended the
6th longest streak of consecutive starts by a QB in NFL history. Although NCAA eligibility limits would leave Mills almost 100 starts short of Stafford's mark, I'd love to look back and recognize the analogy here!

Mills can petition for a sixth year. But the Great Savior (McKee) will arrive to lead Stanford out of the Wilderness.

So was UCLA's, although Jack West isn't exactly a D1 quarterback.
Also, Wazzu's sieve just got even more so:

You hate to see it. not Sure it makes up for losing Adebo, though.
