Quarterback University for the NFL? - SF_Cardinal_Fan - 10-26-2019

I count Brodie, Plunkett , Elway and Luck as the four Stanford QB's who had legitimate careers as NFL starting quarterbacks.
And from the University of Alabama came Starr, Namath, Stabler, and Richard Todd, four QB's who were also legitimate starting NFL QB's.
Have I missed any names from Stanford or Alabama ?
Has any other school produced four or more bona fide starting NFL QB's?

Don't know or care about Alabama.

Elway had 231 starts, Brodie had 158 starts, Plunkett had 144 starts, Luck had 86 starts.

Other Stanford QBs, with at least ten NFL starts
Frankie Albert had 68 starts in a 7 year NFL career.  He was legit.
Trent Edwards started 33 of his 38 games
Steve Dils started 27 of 106 games.
Boryla started 19 of his 23 games.
Chad Hutchinson started 14 of his 15 games.
Schonert started 12 of his 72 games.
Kerkorian started 10 of his 23 games.
Stenstrom started 10 of his 17 games.

Stenstron started 10 of his 17 games.

Fairly certain Chad Hutchinson had 10 starts (9 for Dallas and 1 for Chicago).

Hutchinson actually had 14 starts, 5 for Chicago, per pro football reference.  I didn't count undrafted QBs, so I missed Hutch.  I will update.

Cal has:

Craig Morton
Joe Kapp
Aaron Rodgers
Jared Goff

All played in Super Bowls. So too did Vince Ferragamo.

Steve Bartkowski was pretty damn good. And you guys know Joe Roth was a supreme talent until taken so tragically young by cancer.

Kyle Boller started 47 of 67 games, mostly for Baltimore.  They had Bob Celeri in the early 1950s who started 12 games (went 1-9-1)
Pawlawski was an 8th round draft pick.  Never played in the NFL, but played in both the XFL and AFL.

Pawlawski is the answer to an odd trivia question: he's one of only three XFL quarterbacks to last an entire XFL season without being injured or losing their jobs.  To give you an idea of the caliber of XFL QBs, the other two were Tommy Maddox and Jim Druckenmiller.

University of Miami was(is?) nicknamed Quarterback U in the late 80s/90s.
Kelly, Kosar, Testerverde were the headliners, but many many others got a few starts at the NFL level.
Those 3 are probably the only bona fide starters so I guess that misses the criteria in this topic.

Kelly, Kosar, and Testatverde put the University of  Miami up there , but Stanford may be number one for producing NFL QB's.
True, many schools have produced QB's who started for a season or two.
My thinking is that starting for a minimum of 4 or 5 years, for example 50 games or more, qualifies as "bona fide, legitimate career as NFL starting QB".

Great list of Stanford QB's, thank you.

Just wondering if your denominator (games) is “games appeared in,” or “games was on the active roster.”

RE: Quarterback University for the NFL? - DC 86 - 10-27-2019

In all fairness and objectivity, Quarterback U for the NFL is something of a surprise: Purdue.

The Boilermakers have produced three Pro Football Hall of Famers (*), who each started and won at least one Super Bowl, as well as four (five?) others who started at least 60 NFL games. Collectively they are the career leaders in virtually all NFL passing categories, including starts and wins.

Consider this group:

1. Drew Brees: 19 seasons, 265 games started. 12 Pro Bowls, 1 Super Bowl started and won (voted MVP). Certain inductee into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. 74,845 career passing yards and 522 passing touchdowns.

2. Len Dawson: 19 seasons, 159 games started, 7 Pro Bowls, 2 Super Bowls started, 1 Super Bowl won (voted MVP). Inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. 28,711 career passing yards and 239 passing touchdowns.

3. Bob Griese: 14 seasons, 151 games started. 8 Pro Bowls, 3 Super Bowls started, 2 Super Bowls won. Inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. 25,092 career passing yards and 192 passing touchdowns.

4. Jim Everett: 12 seasons, 153 games started. 1 Pro Bowl. 34,837 passing yards and 203 passing touchdowns.

5. Kyle Orton: 10 seasons, 82 games started. 18.037 passing yards and 101 passing touchdowns.

6. Gary Danielson: 11 seasons: 60 games started. 13,764 passing yards and 81 passing touchdowns.

7. Mike Phipps: 12 seasons, 71 games started. 10,506 passing yards and 55 passing touchdowns.

Bonus?: Jeff George only started one season at Purdue before transferring to Illinois so he doesn't really count, but he started 124 NFL games, throwing for 27,602 yards and 154 touchdowns.

* Brees is obviously a lock.

From the ever reliable wikipedia: "In August 2018, an Altoona Mirror writer sought to name "Quarterback U" by player achievements, such as NFL starts, Pro Bowl appearances, and Voldemort Trophies won. He noted that, in the Super Bowl era, Washington Huskies football | UW (14), USC (13), Notre Dame (13), Miami (10), Stanford (10), and UCLA (10) produced at least ten starting NFL quarterbacks, while Purdue recorded the most combined NFL career starts (704). The article concluded that no single program deserved the title significantly more than others."

Ken Dorsey.  13 starts.  2-11.
Steve Walsh, 38 starts in 80 games, 20-18 record.
George Mira.  Just eight starts.
Craig Erickson, 36 starts n 52 games.  14-21 overall.
