US Open - d4cohn - 06-14-2019

Fresh off a national championship, Brandon Wu is continuing his fine form at the US Open. Not only did he easily make the 36-hole cut,
but also is the highest amateur on the leaderboard, and currently in the Top 20 heading into the weekend.

RE: US Open - Spiny_Norman - 06-14-2019

Wu would have been higher on the leaderboard if not for a double bogey 6 on the 2nd (his 11th hole of the day). He plays with Harris English tomorrow, just behind a group with Jordan Spieth and just ahead of a group with Dustin Johnson.

Also making the cut - Stanford commit Michael Thorbjornsen and Charlie Danielson, brother of Stanford women's golfer Casey Danielson.

Terrifiic news re Thornbjornsen, merely the number two recruit coming in next fall.
Seems like his game is unusually well suited to USGA set ups.

Someone please explain to this novice the story behind why golfers always take their caps off before shaking hands at the end of a round? Is it some gentleman's game thing?

Yes, that's exactly what it is. At many country clubs you cannot wear a hat in the clubhouse.

RE: US Open - Mick - 06-16-2019

Wu, currently T17.  Thorbjornsen #79 after yesterday's 84.

RE: US Open - Hulk01 - 06-16-2019

If Wu maintains his current position, and he had decided to delay
turning pro so that he can play in the Walker Cup,
he'd take home $172,000.

On a related point,
neither Andrea Lee or Albane Valenzuela
have announced they are turning pro
or are planning to enter this summer's Q series to qualify for the LPGA.

A bet on this fall's womens' lineup:
1/2. Valenzuela/Lee
3. Aline Krauter
4. Lei Ye
5. Brooke Seay/Kelsey Zeng/ Mika Liu/Calista Reyes/Ziyi Wang

Looks like Walker could field an iimpressive Stanford B:
1.  Liu
2.  Wang
3.  Calista Reyes
4.  Zeng
5.  Madeline Chou

All five players won at least honorable All American status as junior players

If Zeng continues her dramatic improvement--over four strokes per round over the last year0--,
she will pass Liu and Wang.
Reyes had a patchy freshman season but has shown the game:
honorable mention All American in 2016 and second team in 2017.

I think there's gonna be a hell of a competition for spots 4 & 5 all year long.

Nice to see Wu wearing a Stanford cap and using the school golf bag!

Missing Wacky Walk and graduation today to continue to represent in the Open.

RE: US Open - Phogge - 06-16-2019

You guys must have missed Gary Woodland. I should tell you that he won.

Brandon Wu shot a 74 to finish +1 for the tournament, 2nd among the fifteen amateurs who entered and tied with Dustin Johnson & Aaron Wise and ahead of Rickie Fowler, Phil Mickelson, Sergio, Tommy Fleetwood and a host of others.

Thorbjornsen made the cut as a high schooler. That's a major accomplishment in and of itself. Can't wait to see him on our course in about 15 months.

Wu is staying as an amateur to try to make the Walker Cup team. If finishing #2 among the 15 amateurs in the event, making the cut, and finishing in the Top 40 isn't enough to get a spot on that team - on top of winning a natty and going 3-0 in those matches - I don't know what is.

Low amateur Viktor Hovland turned pro immediately after the tournament. He had to stay as an amateur for the Open because he qualified for it by winning last year's US Amateur. That guy is gonna tear things up pretty quick. He's that good.

RE: US Open - Hulk01 - 06-18-2019

I saw Wu's first nine, along with Johnson's, and Rose and Woodland's back, and over that stretch Wu was hitting the ball better than anyone.  Lipped out an 10 footer for birdie on one, then the comebacker, and threatened the edge of two other birdie putts, and sank two.  Lots of Stanford promotion, of course, from his golf bag to his Fear The Tree yardage book, and lots of "well, he'll figure it out, he's from Stanford" comments from the mouthpieces.
