IRA Rowing Championships - Canalejas - 05-31-2019

Intercollegiate rowing, apart from the women's heavyweight category, remains outside of the NCAA.

The Stanford men's varsity eight came in 4th in their first race:

Washington had the fastest time out of all four heats, Cal the second-fastest.

So the Stanford boats are not off to a great start. For what it's worth, in men's rowing there is no points system to determine the overall champion as there is in NCAA women's rowing. So the winner of the varsity eight gets called the national champion.

The 1V did well to beat Navy and get to the A/B semi. Right now that's the mark of a good season for Stanford, and until we get the big guns to compete with the A-final programs, them's the breaks. For this crew, they put together a good race when it counted. Navy might have also sold out hard in their heat to try for that second place semi qualification spot, but they just missed out, as Brown was a bit faster. If Stanford found their swing, they'll have...well...I don't know. Their semi has Yale (untouchable), kal (won 2x vs. Stanford), Brown, Northeastern (won vs. Stanford), and Cornell. So Stanford needs to be in that third-place slot to get to the Grand Final...I'm not betting on it, but I'd love to see it. Stanford is seeded 5th in their semi.
The 2V seemed about as expected. I did not expect the 3V to lose to Hobart in the heat and then UCSD in the rep, but given that Stanford has done away with their frosh/novice boat in favor of a unified program, I suppose I could have seen this coming.
I am excited to see the lightweights race tomorrow...the four is not favored this year unfortunately, but the eight and points trophy are still in play for Stanford.

Lightweights continue their dominance! Amazing program, amazing student-athletes.
Stanford men take 10th in the V8 with a blistering sprint to nip Dartmouth by 0.004 sec...that's a very good result.
