WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS!! -- men's golf - Spiny_Norman - 05-23-2019

The Stanford men's golf team, one of the hottest in the country with 4 consecutive wins, begins its NCAA golf tournament tomorrow starting at 1:27 pm central. The lineup will be the same as for regionals - Wu, Salinda, Snyder, Shimp, Tuleubayev. In a change that was implemented last year, the NCAA will allow teams to swap out players between rounds of the tournament. Stanford's alternate/substitute is Nate Menon.

You can follow results here - http://results.golfstat.com/public/leaderboards/gsnav.cfm?pg=team&tid=17527

Go Cardinal!

I think our guys will make the top 8. Looking forward to seeing them do it.

RE: NCAA Championship - men's golf - Hulk01 - 05-24-2019

The seer says ASU, Oklahoma, and Auburn all make the final eight.

This spring, we're 2-0 against ASU,
beating them by 21 strokes per event.

1-1 against Oklahoma,
with an average net win by nine strokes.

We're 1-0 against Auburn;
beat them by 27.

We also beat #7 Georgia Tech by six,
and have gone 4-0 against #9 USC,
with an average win by 22 strokes.
(SC was ranked sixth before we went on this streak.)

RE: NCAA Championship - men's golf - Hulk01 - 05-24-2019

Course is playing tough,
but we are seeing more birdies
than from the women.

I'm betting the men's teams will average about
four stokes better per round.

RE: NCAA Championship - men's golf - slide - 05-24-2019

looking at Illinois' card starting on par 5 #10 (in order):  birdie, triple, bogey, double, triple

RE: NCAA Championship - men's golf - ColoradoTree - 05-24-2019

A mixed bag to start off, but it could certainly be worse. Collectively, Stanford has three birdies, two bogeys, and 1 double bogey (Wu on the first hole), through nine total holes, for a -1 team score.

Methinks any team would be very happy with a team score under par today. The best score by a team that's already finished for the day is Texas A&M with a +8. All the teams in the top 8 right now have basically just started.

Wu birdies #2, which is a relief. I don't think our chances would be great if we had to drop Wu's score today! He's +1, and still our drop score for now.

* Salinda is -1 through 2
* Wu is +1 through 2
* Snyder is E through 3
* Shimp is E through 4
* Tuleubayev is E through 4

Just five teams under par right now, and just one more at even par. Of those six teams, only BYU started on the back 9.

Now even par as a team, as Salinda birdies #3 to get to -2, but Wu bogeys #3 to drop to +2, Snyder bogeys #4 to get to +1, and Tuleubayev bogeys #5 to drop to +1. Only Texas, Auburn, and Cal are under par, though, and we're in 4th place by ourselves.

In second place by ourselves at -3 as a team through 28 total holes:

* Salinda is -2 through 4
* Wu is E through 5 (though he hasn't made par on a hole yet!)
* Snyder is +1 through 6
* Shimp is -2 through 6
* Tuleubayev is +2 through 7

RE: NCAA Championship - men's golf - ColoradoTree - 05-24-2019

No big deal, but we're currently in the lead by ourselves at -4 as a team, nearing the end of the front 9. Auburn is second at -1, and Cal is 3rd at even par. 8th place is +4 at the moment.

* Salinda is -3 through 5 (tied for the individual lead)
* Wu is E through 6 (3 birdies, a bogey, and a double)
* Snyder is +1 through 6
* Shimp is -2 through 7
* Tuleubayev is +2 through 8

But that brutal back 9 still looms, and the top 4 teams all started on the front 9....

Cal is in third place, but the Bears have little room for error, as their #4, Crampton, is +8 through 7. So, any mistake the other 4 make the rest of the day is likely to count.

Salinda birdies 6 to take the individual lead at -4, but Snyder doubles 7 and he's now the drop score at +3, so Stanford still leads at -4:

* Salinda is -4 through 6 (individual leader)
* Wu is E through 7 (3 birdies, a bogey, and a double)
* Snyder is +3 through 8
* Shimp is -2 through 8
* Tuleubayev is +2 through 9

Shimp bogeys 9 to drop to -1, but the team score of -3 is still good enough for a one-stroke lead over Auburn. Cal is in 3rd at -1, and 8th place is still +4.

Now tied with Auburn for second place (-1) behind Cal (-3); 8th place is +7:

* Salinda is -4 through 9 (leader)
* Wu is E through 9
* Snyder is +3 through 10
* Shimp is E through 11 (bogeyed 9 and 11)
* Tuleubayev is +3 through 11

Now tied with Auburn for first place (-2) as a Cal triple bogey on 10 drops them to even par, and Wu birdies 10 to get under par for the first time today (despite it being his fourth birdie of the round); 8th place is +7.

RE: NCAA Championship - men's golf - winflop - 05-24-2019

A few holes left to play and our boys are playing great!

Salinda is tied for the lead at -3 through 14. 3 guys are at +2 with 1-3 holes left and Snyder is at +5.

Team is tied for 3rd at +3 but only 8 shots clear of being out of match play. Three rounds left a lot can still happen but this is a great start!

RE: NCAA Championship - men's golf - bbm233 - 05-24-2019

Cardinal finish the round in 2nd place, one stroke behind top ranked Oklahoma St. There is a little separation for the top 4 teams (also includes Cal and Auburn, who were the Cardinal's playing partners). Salinda led the way at 2 under. Wu and Shimp were +1 and Tuleubayev was +3 as the four who counted. Snyder had a round to forget, which fortunately we can.

Tomorrow the Cardinal are off early (6:07am Pacific) and start on the back nine, which was the harder side for the team today. Great start - this team has the positive mojo really rolling.

Also, four of the top five individuals after the first round are from the Conference of Champions. Morikawa (Cal) leads at -5, followed by Yu (ASU) and Dunkle (Utah) at -3, and Salinda at -2. Ok St has a guy in there at -3, but surprisingly not one of their big 2.

The other Pac 12 teams are Cal in a tie for 3rd, ASU in 10th place and USC in 12th place.

RE: NCAA Championship - men's golf - CTcard - 05-25-2019

They're off and running on day 2.

Oklahoma State has started off on fire and moved to a 7 stroke lead. They've begun on the front 9.
Stanford is doing fine, -1 early on the day - in second for now. Stanford starts on the back 9.

RE: NCAA Championship - men's golf - oldalum - 05-25-2019

OSU is -4 on the front nine so far; we played the front nine in -3 yesterday, so their current lead may be more a front nine/back nine thing.
_____________________________________________________________________

Ha! Wishful thinking at its best. OSU finished the front nine at -7, and is tearing up the back nine now at -4 so far. Man they are good.

But back in mortal-land, we're doing fine, almost finished with the back nine at even par.

RE: NCAA Championship - men's golf - Hulk01 - 05-25-2019

Thank God it's match play.
No way we'd beat the Cowboys in more than 18 holes of stroke play.

Let' get the three or or six seed
so wouldn't see them at all
unless me got the match finals.

ASU the number two team in the country?
That was always ridiculous.

RE: NCAA Championship - men's golf - BostonCard - 05-25-2019

2, 3, 6, or 7 would all be on the other side of the bracket from OK State.  We are currently in second place, a long way away from Ok state, but also with fair room to #8.

RE: NCAA Championship - men's golf - bbm233 - 05-25-2019

We get to see OK State up close starting tomorrow as, barring a miracle round from a couple of the poorer seeded teams, we are going to finish the day in in the top 3. The pairings get re-jiggered after 36 holes, and the top three teams will play together each day. OK State had four players under par today, and have created a brobdingnagian gap back to us (and we look like we might end up with a decent gap back to fourth).

RE: NCAA Championship - men's golf - oldalum - 05-25-2019

We end up -1 on the day, +2 for the tournament, and in excellent shape.

Cal really crashed and burned on the front nine today: started out with -1 on the back nine, but ended up +12 on the day, one of the worst rounds posted so far today. Now at +16 for the tournament. In other good news, University of SCandal has recorded two consecutive +16s and is almost at the bottom of the pile. Not going to make the cut to 15 tomorrow.

Congrats to Henry and Daulet for their play at 4 and 5.  David is struggling, some aspect of his game must not fit this course.  Lets hope he can give us a good one tomorrow.

Would be fitting redemption from 2014 when we won stroke play but lost to the Cowboys in the semifinals of match play.

RE: Round 3 - Get up early! - bbm233 - 05-25-2019

For the second consecutive day, Stanford tied for the second best round, which puts the Cardinal in second place. Unfortunately, for the second consecutive day, OK St had the best round of the day, and today there was a big gap. After 36 holes, Stanford is 12 shots behind OK St, and 5 shots clear of Texas A&M. These three teams will play together on Sunday, and be the first off. That's a 4:50am PDT tee shot for David Snyder!

There is a cut at the end of the round tomorrow, with the top 15 teams advancing to the final stroke play round on Monday. Stanford is currently 23 shots ahead of 15th place, so there won't be any drama about getting to play on Monday. At the end of Monday's round, the individual champion is crowned. Stanford's best hope for that honor is Isaiah Salinda, who is two shots out of the lead. Also, at the end of Monday's round, the top 8 teams advance to the quarterfinals of match play. Stanford is currently 15 shots clear of 8th place and hopefully is just playing for seeding on Monday.

The Pac 12 continues to do well in the individual competition, with 5 of the top 8. In addition to Salinda, Shimp has stepped it up and is alone in 7th place. In the team competition, the Pac 12 still has three teams above the projected 3rd round cut line: Cal is tied for 7th and ASU is 12th. USC's season is likely to end tomorrow, as they are in 23rd and haven't given any indication that they will improve.

Yeah, it’s ok state - chasm - Stanford - gap - TAMU - everyone else.  Thankfully come Tuesday, everyone’s scores revert to 0.
