Stanford Trivia - BobK - 02-12-2019

What former Stanford starting QB had a
23-6 record as a Stanford pitcher ?

RE: Stanford Triva - Spiny_Norman - 02-12-2019

Chad Hutchinson?

Hutchinson (TPHS!) was my first thought, but when I checked I saw he wound up going 25-11.

Mark Marquess?

Steve Cottrell.

The QB who gave way to John Paye. Yes Steve Cottrell

RE: Stanford Triva - Spiny_Norman - 02-12-2019

Cottrell had a memorable game in 1981 substituting for an injured John Elway vs. ASU. In barely more than a half of action, he was 21 of 34 passes for 311 yards and two touchdowns.  But ASU shredded Stanford's defense like Kleenex and won 62-36.

I found an article that listed Cottrell as 5'10" tall. Can that be correct?

I don't know his height.  But I liked the fact that he appeared in relief duty in seven games in 1983 as a senior and his five TD passes ranked #9 in the Pac-10.

Note how many Pac-10 QBs on that list played in the NFL.  Gilbert, Neuheisel, Pelluer, Miller, Bono, Salisbury, Turner, Crawford, Hons.  Todd Hons was the TD leader, but played in the NFL for just a year, as did Turner and Crawford.  Still, more than half the list got there in one form or another.  I imagine some of the others were like Paye and got invited to an NFL camp.

Cottrell was the staring QB in early 83 then Paye took over. Cottrell is listed at 6 foot in the baseball media guide

Paye was with the 49ers 2 years but could not play with his arm injury suffered at Stanford.
