I'm making a guess on ambiance... - Redrum - 07-25-2011
Although football coaches tend to be, for the most part, pretty secure people, I am guessing that the ambiance of this year's gaggle of coaches in close quarters on tour will be just a little more relaxed without Harbaugh. I hope Shaw scares them a little, but he's just not the same as Captain Intense.
Well, you guessed wrong -

... on the spelling of "ambience"

Take an Ambien and try again tomorrow.
Kathy, Kathy, ma petit francophile - Redrum - 07-26-2011
The reference I looked at before I posted that allowed for both and listed the same definition. Either seemed acceptable, as, indeed does the spelling and usage of "petit" and "petite" in the subject line.
um, no. -
yvonne - 07-26-2011
um, no. You got petit wrong for two reasons:
1. Kathy is female, and therefore words about her must be feminine.
2. Petit does not match gender with ma or with francophile.
And no, petit and petite cannot be used interchangeably.
It's Latin, not French -
Kathy - 07-26-2011
Webster's Third New International Dictionary, Unabridged (the undisputed authority for both the AP Stylebook and Chicago Manual of Style) lists "ambience" as the preferred spelling. It comes from the Latin
ambient, which the French mongrelized to
ambiant.
It is a word I correct on a near-weekly basis when I am forced to edit intern copy.

I would hardly call it "mongrelization," unless you would say that all Romance languages are mongrelizations.

I can live with Latin as the golden standard of a language! :)

Goyim like me, and without access to google translate in their own slice of the internet, might wanna know the approximate sense seems to be "But the holy Hebrew language".
Well now that you've ruined it -
yvonne - 07-27-2011
but Hebrew [is] the holy language.
(The verb "to be "in the present tense is understood in Hebrew.)

So, Kathy. Why is it... - Redrum - 07-27-2011
that you can emerge from your lair to punish the sincere-but-supposedly-benighted, yet not a peep, nothing on the rumors about Texas A&M splitting from the Big 12-10-8-6 and joining the SEC? Doesn't hubby mumble under his breath while mucking out the stalls?
Still catching up -
Kathy - 07-27-2011
I traded in my Midwestern "lair" this month for a beachfront cottage in the Caribbean, where the only sports news concerns cricket and soccer. Just got back, so we were clueless about A&M rumblings. There's a lot to grumble about, it seems. At Monday's Big 12 media days, though, Mizzou's Gary Pinkel was the only one who didn't tap dance around the burnt-orange elephant in the room.
