WBB: Stanford 85 WSU 64 -

Preview:
If we beat WSU--we have never lost to them in 63 games--Tara will get win 900 at Stanford. Wow. So what are the prospects of beating WSU?
WSU's RPI is 100, a few notches below Washington. Actually, they were ahead of Washington until Washington moved up on the strength of its loss to us! They are 7-10 and have beaten Washington, Colorado, and San Francisco, but have lost to Gonzaga, Utah, and just lost to Cal--by a comfortable margin. Their best win was probably a double overtime victory over Nebraska.
WSU is led by Borislava Hristova, a 6' redshirt junior forward known to all as "Bobbye Buckets." She is averaging 22 ppg and they mostly come inside on a sizzling 49% shooting. The three Molina sisters are all forces to be reckoned with. Chanelle is the starter. She plays point and makes 40% of her treys and has an excellent assist/turnover ratio. She averages 16 ppg. Alexis Swedlund shoots 45% of her threes and has made 47 of them. Clearly she is a very dangerous shooter and will need a lot of attention. They also have a 6'4" senior center from Portugal. On paper, they look like a more dangerous team than Washington, but their results have not been consistent. Let's hope that tomorrow is not the day that Bobbye Buckets and Alexis Swedlund get hot. It will be interesting to see how Tara defends a sizzling outside shooter and a slashing forward at the same time. The Hulls may get a big defensive responsibility again.
Overview:
Tara wins her 900th at Stanford and Alanna sets a personal best with 34 points, while we hold Hristova to 11. All in a day's work.
Before the Game:
We learned that Maya would still not be playing. She is out of the boot but not practicing yet. Lexie is healthy, but just needs more game time to get back to her prior self.
Flow of the Game:
Once again we blew the game open in the first quarter with a 29-13 outpouring, only to see the offense slow down in a 15-13 second quarter. The 31 points we scored in the 3rd extinquished any tiny gleam of hope WSU may have held, and the fourth allowed Tara to liberally substitute and get the entire bench into the game. So, for the second game this weekend there was no drama, except for the plethora of beautiful plays that our players made.
Performances:
We have to start with Alanna. WSU had no one who could guard her. She hit 4/5 treys and was 13/17 overall. Several times she brought the ball down and cut through lanes to the basket for easy layups. She scored from everywhere on the floor. To all that scoring she also added 15 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 blocks. And perhaps the most impressive stat of them all: 0 fouls.
Kiana had 19 points. Not only did she hit 3/6 of her treys, she showed several times that even small speedy quick guards like WSU's cannot keep up with her when she puts it on the floor and goes to the basket.
Rounding out our big three was Dijonai Carrington. D had a good offensive game with 11 points, but she and Lacie defended Hristova and did it very well. Holding Hristova to 11 points--half her average--is an impressive accomplishment.
Alyssa Jerome and Lacie Hull were the other two starters. Alyssa showed more signs of offense--shooting 7 times and making 2. We need her offense to develop a bit more. Lacie was also 2/7 but was most notable for her defense.
From the bench we saw quite a lot of Lexie, Jenna Brown, and Anna Wilson, and a little less of everyone else. Lexie was 0/6, which I am sure will frustrate her. She sometimes seems to be doing too much--she is so eager to be involved and return to form. She did have 6 rebounds, an assist and a steal in limited minutes. The rest will come. Jenna also looked a bit overeager. On the one hand, her ball handling looked quite good. She is a strong, strong point guard. Once I saw her going
through a screen rather than around it--it was not called a foul, but she bumped into the player, moved her a foot or two, bumped into her again, moved her again, and then nearly knocked her over on the third try. She held that block longer than some of our offensive linemen! She was 1/3, and still seems hesitant to take open treys, and a little too frenetic when she attacks the basket. Anna Wilson acquitted herself quite well, I thought going 2/2 and playing some good defense.
As a team, we shot an even 50%, 48% from three, and held WSU to 36% shooting. We gave up 13 offensive rebounds to WSU, however, which allowed WSU to finish with one more rebound than we had. That was just about the only weakness. We had only 10 turnovers to their 14, and 14 of our baskets were assisted.
WSU's new coach does not use any kind of zone, which let us play the Princeton the whole game through. I think we got a good look at its strengths as a scheme today. We got a sprinkling of backdoor cuts, and ran their defense ragged by the third quarter.
Conclusion:
No doubt we are a good team this year, and have played very well the last two weekends. After we finish our road trip to Colorado and Utah next week, then the true gauntlet begins with Cal, the Oregon Schools, and the SoCal schools away. Watching the last couple of weeks a fan might be forgiven for believing the sky is the limit with this team. But there will come a game where we will desperately need Dodson, and we have to hope she is back by then.

The Cougs have a very interesting squad, no one from the West Coast and only a couple from mainland USA. Truly an international team.
Of course, I'm sure they would have loved to have the Hull twins, who are only about an hour's drive from the Wazzu campus.

63 games...so many have been blowouts, but there were a few nail-biters along the way. Some day WSU will beat Stanford. I just hope I'm not alive to see it.

My enjoyment and support of Stanford athletics would be a fraction of what it is if the athletes were not such great students and people.

The Pac-12 TV contract strikes again down here in SoCal. Just like they did to the UW game Friday, they will show the Stanford game at 11:15pm tonight. Noon is reserved for the Oregon game. I think this is the National feed. The LA feed has reruns of old games all day.
Guess I’ll have to watch it on my phone again if I want to see it live. Thanks Larry!

Great writeup! I only saw about half the game but I agree with your observations that Jenna and Lexie sometimes look like they have been pressing a bit too much. And that we need more offense out of Alyssa. Everyone is going to be geared up to try and stop Alanna and Alyssa should have more opportunities when that happens.

ASU beats OSU in a hard fought double overtime game at OSU. Nice to see them get a win over #10 after 4 close losses to top 10 teams

Thanks for the great write-up as always.
On the mildly negative side, the second unit plus Di had a rough 4th quarter, to the point where Tara subbed in 5 players at once: the other four starters plus Brewer. I suppose that just shows WSU is a lot better than UW, good enough to make some hay against our bench.
I'm crossing my fingers that Maya will be back for Cal. That's my optimistic interpretation of Tara's remark in last week's Chron that it would be "a couple of weeks."
I think Jenna is really improving. It's helping her to get a lot of playing time with Marta out.

Agree that Lexie was pressing a bit. She missed a couple of wide open layups. However she still contributed with 7 rebounds.

Repeat this pledge after me:
Quote:Even if Alanna misses as many FT in a game as the whole team has missed in the previous 3 games, as long as she hits at least 50% of her FTA and does better with her 3PT% than her FT%, I will not complain.
Alanna did miss 2 FT today out of 6 FTA (75%).
But, she hit 4/5 treys. 80% 3pt% > 75% FT% > 50%, so I won't complain. Amazing.
Her misses dropped Stanford FT% to just 38 of 42 over the past 4 games (90.5%). For 3PT%, over those 4 games, the team is 42/99 3PT (42.4%), and Alanna is 12/20 (60%).
These blowout games feel like many of the games in the early 90s. I'm hoping we do as well at the end of the season as '92.
[Anyone else frustrated by Stanford's live stats (SideArm Sports) feed not working during the game, at least through the first half? At midnight, the link from GoStanford still gets to a page that says the game has not started. I've only looked 3 times this season and 2 times it wasn't working. (Last time, it started working in the 2nd half.)]
In the first 4:30 of the game, all starters had scored.
My take of the game is that we had wonderful 1Q (29-13, 1 TO) and 3Q (31-18, 1 TO), a weak 2Q (15-13, 4 TO), and a really bad 4Q (10-20 4 TO, mostly due to subs, but not entirely). IMO, Tara should have done a different set of subs early in the 4th. It appears we subbed back in all the starters at 5:45 in the 4Q to stop a 0-9 slide. Our starters lost 1 point more of the lead until some were taken out at 3:01 (when both teams subbed in the reserves).
81alum: Which opportunities do you want to take away from Alanna and instead give to Alyssa? As we've recognized in past years, playing with dominating players reduces the opportunities & experience of other players.
Unfortunately the PxP doesn't accurately show the subs in/out for Alyssa and Alanna (nor even all the shots). Alyssa did play without Alanna in the last 3 minutes, but with a miscellaneous cast. To give Alyssa realistic development time, she needs to be on the court with Lacie, Lexie, DiJonai, and Kiana. If Alanna is in, she's going to get virtually all of the interior offensive opportunities. If Shannon is in, the offense falls apart. Maya would be good, but if she's available, Alyssa will get a iot less time.
2Q issues: Mostly our offense stumbled. We had 4 turnovers. Lexie had some difficulties, as did Shannon. (One TO charged to Kiana should have been to Shannon.) No long scoring drought, but we had more difficult shots and deflected shots. We were 7 of 19 in shooting for the quarter (37%).
---------
Stanford conference WBB prices: $15, $20, $30, $40 depending on the seat (Season "starting at $200"). Attendance: 2702
Oregon State WBB prices: $10, $15. (Conference Season: $63 - $99) Attendance: 5222
Oregon WBB rices: $5, $10, $15, $20 (Season: $50-$150) Attendance: 6468
------------
The travel called on Alanna in the lane was not correct. She did pick up her pivot foot, but had passed the ball well before she put it down.
I was watching the officiating in the ASU-OSU game. It is frustrating how many calls by the officials were questionable (that was a Missy game, but the missed calls were spread around).
