What are you hearing about the cracks in the Big XII?

"Cracks" evident during The Great Pac-16 boondoggle - Redrum - 07-22-2011
We heard most of this last year when it looked like Commissioner Scott might just really take over the entire western U.S. Then, poof! The main problem driving these rumors now is people are discovering that they sold the livestock and most of the entire farm to Univ. of Texas as far as revenue splits and TV rights go. The other thing that never really got resolved was Texas A&M's flirtation with the SEC. Apparently the interest was mutual and much stronger on the A&M side than people saw at the time.  Texas A&M would fit well in the SEC and it would fit the not-so-secret SEC world-domination scenario. Trouble is, they need another team which means more than stealing a few ponies off the Big12 ranch. The rumor back then was to get Oklahoma and A&M. If A&M could go to the SEC and still retain a season game against Texas, this could be BIG.

How long until we have just one big conference? It kind of reminds me of an obscure line from a terribly obscure movie that I'm embarrassed to be referencing: "Now
all restaurants are Taco Bell."
In the Google Age NOTHING is obscure any more.. -

Hey Lurck, I saw Dr. Horrible for the first time tonight. Not bad, if only because of its unconventional ending.
Here's a few links for background reading:
The Big 12 conference realignment motivation scale: Essentially, who wants to go most.
The Longhorn Network is nuclear armageddon: Why OU and A&M are really, really steamed about the LHN, other than the usual reasons.
A&M and OU to SEC if LHN issues not resolved: And the ubiquitous unnamed sources quoting dire prophecies that make Cassandra look like a magic 8-ball.
The recruiting advantage detailed in the second link is pretty significant. That's Texas's (really, Mack Brown's) bread and butter--the coaching certainly has a long way to go, but it's already been improved with the departure of former OC Greg Davis. The other schools of the Big 12 are stuck with Texas. No other conferences really want them as far as I can see, except maybe the Big 10 absorbing Iowa State...and maybe the Kansas schools? Who wants to be in a conference where they named their divisions Leaders and Legends anyway? The comments of the third link allude to a future Pac-conference expansion, and maybe that is the future, although I think Congress should think about revoking the tax-exempt status of university athletic departments if superconferences begin forming. That always scares university ADs to a screeching halt (or it did this last time talk of the Pac-zilla conference was aired).
FM, whoa! WHOA!! (spoiler warning, folks gotta see DrH 1st) -

All Right NOW, most excellent FM. I can live with a review of not bad, at least you gave it a tryout.Â
As video, like from home streaming over the net free (youtube.com/cupjay has a link for that), or in person at this week's SD stage production, opening simultaneous with ComicCon?

Other's might confess they loved DrH
in spite of the unconventional ending, go figure. Me and the channeled ghost of MGK were addicted by the musical numbers, and by Buffy/Firefly creator Joss "shoot the hostage" Whedon's achingly over-written script, a product of the '08 failed writers strike no less.Â
Geeky, inhumanly pale and diminutive top drawer UT math grad, and HS teen violin virtuoso / sweetheart Felicia Day's stereotypical arc nevertheless is seductive, esp after 10, 20, or (no kidding) hundreds of repetitions of the tear-jerking soundtrack CD, sniff. Sniff
Nathan Fillion knocking it outta the park goes without saying. But who knew Firefly's
Captain Mal could carry off a caddish singing superhero, The Hammer Is My.. whoopsie, better not go there in a family friendly forum.
Slow breaths, visualizing calm deep blue waters,
deep Blue waters, feeling better now, sorry, still finding balance, nearly there, oh-kay, I'm good.
So, yes, I kinda liked it too, and thanks for weighing in.
Fair warning: watch / listen a few times more and you'll surely be hooked too.
PS: This weekend Joss alleged DrH's loong awaited sequel was actually gonna happen:

I actually met Felicia Day at an autograph session about seven months ago before I'd dipped my toe into anything Dr. H or Guild related. I was there to get stuff autographed for a friend, in fact, and I was quite charmed by Ms. Day (as a violinist myself as well). Anyway, I watched the DVD with some friends and was suitably impressed (Neil Patrick Harris can sing?). I'm not generally a brobdingnagian Whedon fan either, and I confess that part of it is reflexive reaction to the lemming-like opinions my friends have against anything in the Whedon-verse (the guy surely is not Midas).
And as to the original topic, I wonder how quickly the SEC would move to accept OU and A&M, should they defect from the Big 12...

Very impressive credentials FM, color me one seriously jealous Guildy. Coincidentally RR lives not that far a holler from FD's family home in Huntsville Alabama, so I'm sensing collective Geek vulnerability hereabouts on the internet.
Did your group play the DVD's "Commentary" companion musical numbers? Clue for next time, if ever: Helps bunches to have a printout of lyrics in hand [<- late add, intending here to suggest Commentary printouts] for proper appreciation of overlapping voices, like at the opera. The DrH Commentaries are also available on YT.
With Whedon presently directing the ultimate big budget action flick, Avengers, there are quite a few deep pocket money guys genuflecting nightly to the gods that Midas-like returns do accrue.. or even just break even. Truthfully I'd guess dialog is JW's special talent, not so much credibility for car chases or whatever stunt work Avengers indulges.
Nice chatting, but uh-oh, far past california tz bedtime, and no doubt waay past yours too.Â
Other might wanna see the latest challenger, and much younger lady, vs Cardboard's infamous Uma and/or Dana divas.. [pokes GG / RR in the eye with a stick]
Re: Hey, Fullmetal! -

Ah no, we didn't hit the commentary, but I'll be sure to learn the songs before long. JW's dialogue is too witty for realism, imho--funny, but it takes me out of the story's context sometimes. For example, Serenity had the River Tam fight scene near the end where this 90-lb waif of a girl destroys a small battalion of Reavers...physically not so possible! But emotionally satisfying of course--the good girl wins.
I think technology and CGI is making it such that anyone can add in some decent action sequences to a film. With the exception of Michael "Hyperkinetic" Bay's work, I feel like most action scenes from film to film generally feel the same. JW's Avengers hopefully doesn't lose me with saccharine-sweet geek references (character depth please!) despite the fact that I will probably enjoy them anyway. I predict success for Avengers.
Now, Green Lantern and Captain America have been red-flagged by my friends as do-not-see movies...I've held off on those, and yet they've done respectably at the box office iirc.
Felicia Day surely can hold her own against Uma and Dana :)

Thanks FullMetal.
Appreciated your thoughts about the business, and Whedon in particular. Michael Bay.. ugh.
Was tempted to laugh at your classic

Sorry Yvonne for a too long in the tooth, swiped thread jail-break. On the bright side at least we didn't inflict a fresh outbreak of Civil War-itis. Or zombies, yeah, zombies are always a bad sign.

re: For a Friend-- Haha, yeah...strange but true. I had two graphic novels autographed and addressed to my friend, who was visiting family out-of-state during the Christmas holidays. Now I wish I'd had the second item addressed to me! Ah well, it's likely that Ms. Day will swing through Austin again sometime in the future.
That tat looks unnervingly fresh...did she sign his calf, and then he inked over it?
I can multiplex threads between Big 12 football politics and Dr. Horrible fan talk! Who's ready for football (and fandom)?
