Colts/Chiefs - BostonCard - 01-12-2019

So far, not looking good for Andrew Luck and the Colts.  Three possessions, three three-and-outs.  On the other hand, the Chiefs have two touchdowns in their two possessions.

blocked punt for a TD sure helps

now 17-7 Chiefs

Now 24-7. Almost halftime and Colts have 21 yards offense and 0 first downs

RE: Colts/Chiefs - 82lsju - 01-12-2019

not often that a team has more blocked punts than first downs......

RE: Colts/Chiefs - CompSci87 - 01-12-2019

Luck ran a great 2 minute drill to get one shot at the end zone (fade went incomplete) followed by a very short FG attempt with 3 seconds left in the half. The kick hit the upright and bounced out, no good. Sigh.

I don’t play much attention to the NFL — has Indy been drafting OL to protect Luck or are they still drafting SEC RBs?

RE: Colts/Chiefs - CompSci87 - 01-12-2019

They've been drafting OL. Their OL has been excellent this year both in run and pass blocking. You sure wouldn't know that from this game, sadly.

lex24 - lex24 - 01-12-2019

Colts had an amazing season. They were forecasted as the worst team in NLF and looked it first 6 weeks. Went 10-2 from there.

They just played a lousy game today. It happens. Frankly they looked sluggish from the start.

Anybody but the Patriots at this point. Oh, and the Cowboys

RE: Colts/Chiefs - CowboyIndian - 01-12-2019

Not sure it would have made any difference but there were a couple of terrible calls in the 4th quarter with the Colts down 2 scores. The one that sticks out is the "running into the kicker". Zebras!

That call was truly atrocious.

Lex- Will know more after Sunday, but right now I have KC winning the whole enchilada.

Yes, the Colts drafted Quentin Nelson, who is already one of the best guards in the league.  I do now has an above average offensive line, if not one of the best in the league.  I think there was one four or five game streak where Luck wasn’t sacked... at all.  Here are some Quentin Nelson highlights.

More.  PFF grades the Colts offensive line as third in the league, behind David DeCastro’s Steelers and The Cleveland Browns (!?)

Rarely these days does a W-L result surprise me.  This one did, as I felt the Colts would win.

It seems a bit silly to say this, but in playoff football especially, the first play of a game can tell a lot. The Colts were stuffed for a 3 yd loss on first play of game. Though they got 10 back on next play, they did fail on 3rd - as they would the ENTIRE game - and that pretty much was the end, as the Colts were behind in every measure from then on until the clock struck 0:00 in the 4th quarter.

When the #1 3rd down conversion offense in the NFL doesn't convert a single 3rd down the whole game (0-9), against the #31 run defense in NFL, with one of the best OLs in the NFL, and a pretty damn good QB, you have to conclude the Colts were completely out-coached and unprepared. To use one of Bill Walsh's favorite concepts, the Chiefs beat the Colts to the punch all game long. The Colts were undisciplined, several players were not focused, and it was on both sides of the ball.  That's coaching.

Luck didn't play great, but his receivers let him down a lot. The Chiefs only converted 4-14 on 3rd down, but that's because A) they had the ball so much (almost 40 minutes!), and had so many 1st downs on 1st and 2nd down, it hardly mattered.  Moreover, they were 3-4 on 4th down, and most of their 3rd down failures were when they were up 24-7, 24-13, and 31-13 and more interested in running clock.

Just really hard to believe a team that won 10/11 games could play such a stinker of a game. But give the Chiefs credit. They were the better prepared and more focused team.  They put 25 years of playoff futility behind them and Pat Mahomes laid claim to the Top QB in the NFL mantle.

No, you don’t have to conclude they were “out-coached.” You may conclude they were out-played. The Colts looked a bit sluggish. Perhaps the weather contributed - dome teams sometimes struggle in bad weather.

Hell, the greatest kicker in history missed a chippie and an extra point. Is that on the special teams coach?

Frankly I thought Andrew looked a bit tentative. Quarterback coach?

The Chiefs are a better team, playing at home with a week off.

Players determine games. They got outplayed.

The NFL has the most talent parity of any professional sport. The margin of victory is usually razor thin. Coaching is a significant factor in all games played. Many are won and lost before they are played, in scouting and game planning.  I believe the Chiefs beat the Colts last week before the game was played, to win 31-13 and throttle the Colts as they did.

Blame Bill Walsh if you disagree. I'm just applying what I learned from his books.

Spot on Lex. Luck looked tentative at times. The Colts seemed surprised that they got this far. Need a couple of pieces for next year but they are back.

I thought he was playing too calm and analytical.

The offensive line did a fine job of protection yesterday. Luck just threw it in places where the DLine was able to bat it down and the receivers didn't create separation (at least, according to the broadcasters, it's hard to judge such things from the TV broadcast).

Hopefully they can build momentum for next season. Eagles game outcome notwithstanding, this weekend is demonstrates once again that there's a big difference between being a top 2 seed vs just squeaking into the playoffs. It may be home filed advantage and the bye, or it may be a substantive difference in quality. Either way, hopefully Luck can get there soon.

RE: Colts/Chiefs - BostonCard - 01-13-2019

1 vs #2 in both AFC and NFC.  For a year that it seemed thee was a fair bit of parity out there, and when the underdog won in the wildcard round 3/4 times, the divisional round shows the advantage of the bye week and home field advantage.

I guess I’m rooting for the Chiefs and Saints.

Tell that to the Chargers.

Saints win despite many penalties by Peat.
