The Evil Empire goes down - qwerty49 - 01-03-2019

Baylor pulls away from UConn and wins by 11 in Waco.

Strong games from Kalani Brown and Lauren Cox in the paint made the difference IMO.  UConn doesn't seem to have much post defense this year.

Mulkey looked ready to blow a gasket at least 2-3 times when Baylor would open up a double-digit lead and then go stone cold and let UConn back in the game.

I must admit I enjoyed watching KLS have a tough time of it at one point in the 1Q.

Ah... you spoiled it for me.  I'm working late.

Just kidding.... How can anything spoil this?   Let's see  Stanford  > Baylor > UConn > ND.
I like that math...
(Shhh.... don't mention  Gonzaga.)

Don't worry, there's plenty of excitement on that DVR.  Just watching the expressions on Mulkey's and Geno's faces is fun enough.

I did not see our game vs Baylor.  IIRC Cox did not play the entire game.  She and Brown were dominant tonight, but perhaps at some point it might be worth comparing notes on their various strengths and weaknesses.

Glad to see UConn lose as well.  Parity makes the game a lot more exciting.  Plus I find KLS an easy player to root against.  Too much whining and pleading to the refs.

What makes UConn evil?  Geno Auriemma can be cantankerous, but he’s not a bad person. It’s not like the program cheats or the school has corruption in its DNA like Southern Cal does. UConn players are always fine young ladies from what I have gathered.

Just because they win a lot, that makes them evil? I get hating a team because it is so dominant but doesn’t it have to do something else contemptible, like sacrifice it’s values or have bad people who cheat or play dirty, and have a win at all costs mentality that is bad for the sport, to earn the evil moniker?

Agree with OF here. I like Geno a lot, and I think UConn has always played basketball the way the game should be played. Particularly when the team they went down to was Baylor and Kim Mulkey, it's really hard for me to think that UConn is the evil one.

As for KLS, I'm Team Samuelsons, and I like her a lot. Am I disappointed she chose UConn over us? Of course! But I've watched a lot of UConn games and rarely seen her whine to the ref about calls or non-calls - Geno keeps his players on a short leash.

All of that said, this is shaping up to be the most exciting women's basketball season in quite some time - there are at least a half dozen teams that can make a credible claim to being title contenders on any given night, and tons of parity both at the top of the league and within the PAC-12 conference. I'll take it.

I'm on the side that Yukon is the evil empire. They (used to) get all the top recruits and everyone was surprised when they didn't go undefeated in the season. I always think disparity in a sport is bad for it (unless it's Stanford dominating....then it's OK ;) )

I also enjoy watching KLS struggle...she's no Stewy. I hope she goes her whole career without being on the floor for a championship win. Yukon was the champ her freshman year, but she was injured and didn't play. The last 2 years, they were eliminated. This year, I hope they don't make the FF.

All I know is someone seriously lit a fire within or under Brown and Cox - after their loss to us. They looked 180 degrees different. For once I agreed with the annoying Andy Landers who said that UConn just didn’t have bigs to defend them. I don’t recall seeing ONO much and when they inserted Camara she immediately picked up 3 fouls.

I always took "evil empire" to be a term of endearment and acknowledgement of UConn's dominance.

Hell, I thought Notre Dame was the evil empire when USC took a break from being evil.

Does USC ever take a break from being evil? Their evilness may fluctuate, but I would argue it never goes away,
