Bobby Garrett intercepting Paul Larson in 1953. Ninth of the season to lead the nation. Pick 6.

However 21-21 which keeps Stanford out of the Rose Bowl. Garrett goes for at that time an unheard of 300 plus day to upset undefeated UCLA earlier in the season.

My all time favorite Stanford player.

What year did Stanford upset kal  at the old stadium when the fans were throwing oranges onto the field?  Was that when Vardell ran them into the ground?

The orange-throwing used to happen all the time. I remember during Big Game 1990, many members of our band wore hard hats. There were even a few with juicers strapped to the hard hats, and band members were gathering the thrown oranges. You know, because of the old saying -- when disgruntled Ca.l fans throw oranges at you, you make orange juice.

I really would love to see video of these great memories.

1981 - the final game of Darrin Nelson's great career
1985 - Cal kicker Leland Rix missed a FG late in the 4th quarter and Stanford escaped with the win. It was fate. No one named Leland could be expected to beat Stanford.
1987 - Brian Johnson to Walter Batson for an 80 yard TD
1988 - Tuan Van Le!

The game with the Bear fans tearing through the restraining fence to go for the goal posts was 1997, the 100th Big Game. Stanford won, but it was a really sloppy, poorly played, mostly forgettable game except that Stanford won.

My special memory of the 2013 game was scoreboard watching in amazement as Arizona pummeled Oregon to give Stanford the P12 North title.

The orange throwing is particularly egregious when the Cal fans freeze the fruit first. Does the Lacrosse team still go on the field with the Band at Berkeley to catch the fruit and throw it back into the stands?

My favorite memory was Le's block of an extra point in 1988, which happened right in front of me, as I was in a section surrounded by C.al fans.  Stanford was 3-6-1 going into the game, but had only one loss of more than 10 points.  Ca.l was 5-5.

It was Cal on the Stanford 3 yard line, 0:04 to go.  Called "the Cadillac of kickers in college football" by Cal coach Bruce Snyder, all Pac-10 and future all-American Robbie Keen lined up for a 21-yard field goal attempt to win the game on the final play.  Le raced from the left end of the defensive line to block the kick and preserve a 19–19 tie, the last tie in the series. This was the only Big Game to end in a tie after 1953 and under current overtime rules may be the last Big Game to end in a tie.

Indeed, the orange throwing did happen all the time. I've been hit. 

I believe that the hard hats made their first appearance in 1982 - lots of stuff happened in and around that game.

Perhaps this picture is easier to see the hard hats, but I mainly post it because it captures a unique moment in time. This captures the initial celebration of the victory (you can see the correct score on the scoreboard), just before the weenie rabble rushes by in the opposite direction abruptly ending the whole celebration thing.

The most comprehensive recap I could find on YouTube is a set called "Great Moments of the Big Game".  It looks like both sides put one of these together in 1991 to commemorate the 100th anniversary.

CT, the images are not showing.  When you use google images to find an image, you have to right click on it and select "copy image address" and paste that into the image button.  If you paste the web page, the board software can't parse it.

My first game was the Norman game.  Skip Face kicked a FG to put us ahead 17-14, but UCB scored again and Norman was tackled on the UCB 5 yd line as time ran out and we lost 20-17.  We were 3-7 that year and UCB was 2-8.  But my dad was happy, he was a UCB alum.

1984 - my first Big Game. Drum major comes out dressed as Clark Kent, goes into a phone booth during halftime show and emerges as Superman with a Stanford S on his chest. Oh yea, we killed them 27-10

1988 - Tuan Van Le

1990 - enough said

1999 - clinching our first Rose Bowl berth in nearly 30 years.

2000 - F middle

2001 - walking down frat row after the game and some drunk pledge yells "Stanford sucks" to which a student in front of me yells back, "Dude, you were in middle school the last time Cal had the Axe."

2010 - Late in the third quarter, Cal shows their "play of the game" on their video board. 15 seconds of dead air & a blank screen. My older son, then 13, yells "THEY HAVE NOTHING! ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!!" Bunch of former players sitting a couple of rows above us are falling over laughing so hard and many come down & high five him. Also birth of the term "Cattoused"

Thanks for the tip.

I knew the images were not showing, which is why I included both the links and the attempt to paste in the image. Since I couldn't find the issue at the time, I figured a good Samaritan would set me straight.

To be clear to others, the url that appears if you click on "share" button isn't useful for embedding the image - you need to right click and proceed as BC describes.

By the way, can you control the size of the video windows that appear?
[I just posted the web page links. If I use the "Insert a video"  button it doesn't seem to show up - another mistake I am sure. ]

I don't know of a way to set the size of a video.  You can set the size of an image with the optional width and height fields when you insert an image.  I don't have a problem using the "insert video" button.

I believe that the hard hats made their first appearance in 1982 - lots of stuff happened in and around that game. 
Here is an image of our GaryT on the ground beneath Kevin Moen. You cannot see what Gary is wearing on his head, but several others have hard hats. 



I was wearing a hard hat that afternoon. The post-collision photo shows the hard hat in the air, having been dislodged as I hit the ground. Oranges weren't the only hazard: post-game that day, there were also some glass bottles thrown at us. Water balloons also were popular projectiles.
