Air quality affecting Stanford sporting events -
Spiny_Norman - 11-09-2018
The fires in Butte County have pushed the AQI at Stanford to unhealthy levels. All outdoor activities at Stanford through the early afternoon have been cancelled or postponed.
Women's swimming vs. #2 Texas pushed back to 6 pm
Softball and soccer this evening are still scheduled
Football tomorrow is still scheduled. But officials are monitoring the situation. Follow @GoStanford or this page for updates.

Quote:Smoke from the devastating wildfires in Butte County has compromised the air quality throughout much of the Bay Area, including the area surrounding Stanford University.
At this time, most events remain scheduled at their original time including the women's soccer NCAA First Round game, women's volleyball vs. Oregon State, and the football game vs. Oregon State.
Stanford Athletics will continue to monitor the Air Quality Index (AQI), as outlined in our sports medicine and NCAA policies. If the AQI indicates outdoor physical exertion is dangerous, we will take the appropriate steps to protect our student-athletes and fans, including postponing, rescheduling, relocating or cancelling practices and competitions, if necessary.

This gives new meaning to the
"Red Zone", quite unfortunately.
For those outside the area, it's pretty gross outside right now. Unfortunately, smoke from fires has become fairly commonplace here. One thing we've learned is that it can change fairly quickly as the wind blows (so to speak). I just hope no more homes are destroyed upwind.
See more here, if curious:

I know it is Senior Day, but I live in Palo Alto (just off campus), and I really think this game should be postponed/canceled.
I remember last year's WSU-Cal game was played in similarly horrible conditions, and it was an awful experience for both the fans who showed up, and for maintaining healthful conditions for student-athletes to play in. WSU got annihilated 37-3, which I think at least may have been, in part, attributable to the unhealthful conditions.

It's a little too soon to say. Air quality levels in specific areas can evolve quickly and are hard to predict. Right now, the forecast for tomorrow is "Orange" (not "Red"), although today's forecast for Orange proved to be undershot.
I sure hope the game can played, but I agree that there has to be a limit with regard to safety. I just don't know where that limit is.
I'm the guy that was dumb enough to play hoops at lunchtime today (it was indoors, but still gross.)

There's still time for things (the wind) to change, but if it's like today, I would prefer to postpone. I love this team and these games, but health is more important.

It could be replayed on Sat Dec 1 since neither team will be playing in the CCG

based on the below looks like 200 is the key AQI number
https://gostanford.com/news/2018/11/9/athletics-air-quality-notice.aspx
Friday, Nov. 9 (2:30 p.m.): AQI is below 200, falling into the "Unhealthy" range (150-200). Outdoor activities may resume, but must be conducted in accordance with necessary precautions.
Friday, Nov. 9 (4 p.m.): AQI is back above 200. At this time, all outdoor activities must be immediately cancelled. A further update will be sent when the air quality improves to a level that outdoor activities can resume.
Friday, Nov. 9 (5 p.m.): Women's swimming and diving meet, originally scheduled for 2 p.m., has been cancelled.
Friday, Nov. 9 (7 p.m.): Softball and women's soccer are scheduled to be played, as the AQI had been below 200 for 30 minutes, as of 6:30 p.m. Women's soccer will start at approximately 7:20 p.m.

Given the most recent AQI data available, kickoff for the football game against Oregon State remains at 6 p.m. We will continue to monitor and provide updates.

Oh thanks. How clueless of me. That was posted earlier right?

The EPA site has been overloaded most of the day. Finally managed to get in just now. The AQI in Redwood City at 1PM was 172. That number could go up or down fairly quickly.
At current readings, I get a headache just strolling arround unless I put an N95 mask on. I realize the players are way younger and in much better shape. However, I can't imagine they aren't affected.

That's a horrible decision by DAPER. The general population is at risk at AQI 171. How much more student athletes?

I agree.
Palo Alto has been in the 170s pretty consistently yesterday and today--never above 200 but never out of the unhealthy zone either. I expect it will be just like it is now at kickoff.
For those who aren't here to see it--the light outdoors feels like one of those fog induced overcast days, but it is all smoke. It isn't actually overcast at all. I've had a constant headache, a slight eye burn. We have shut the house up and are running the air through our air filter as much as possible.
I'm not excited about the idea of sitting outdoors in the stands--I guess it might be tolerable with a mask. But heavy exercise in this is a really bad idea.
It is depressing to know that a lot of that smoke is what is left of 7000 houses.

I'm really torn on attending. I definitely don't want to take my toddler and have him running around in this air for at least 2 hours, so that means a family trip is out. And while the air doesn't really bother me (in terms of watery eyes or a headache or anything), I've already been working outside on chores pretty much all day (new outdoor lights, long overdue re-caulking of front brick steps, installing new drip irrigation for garden) so I'm probably well over what I should get in a day. Plus I'm really sore (see aforementioned chores) and driving to PA and back solo sounds pretty awful. I feel really bad, having a poorly attended senior day sucks for the seniors, and I generally hate missing games entirely. I'm leaning toward not going but feeling crappy about it.

Game is definitely happening come 6:00 p.m. tonight or is a last minute type postponement "still in the cards" ?

I won't make it either: there's this little problem of living nine time-zones away.

It seems unlikely to be postponed, based on the AQI not having exceeded 200 yet today. It seemed to be getting slightly better at 3pm (164).
We just made the decision to GO. But it’s less of a commitment for us, being in Palo Alto.

Thanks for making me feel like a total underachiever. :)
I think the seniors will understand. LSJUMB son just tells me everything has been screwed up due to the weather to the point that they aren't even being given food that they should have had... Sent an APB to tailgating friends.
Edit: And now they are headed into the stadium (and hopefully given some food).
