5 Star OT Kyle Murphy coming down to Stanford or Oregon - Griffins78 - 07-09-2011

Avinash Kunnath of SB Nation made this post on the UC East Bay section: OT Kyle Murphy Shines At The Opening: Oregon-Stanford Battle Brewing? and referenced this post by JC Shurburtt of 247 Sports: The Opening: Friday Top 10 from the Opening in Oregon at the Nike Campus highlighting those that made big impressions as top performers. Included Aziz Shittu, Ifeadi Odenigbo, and Armani Reeves too.

The post say that the buzz on Friday is that Murphy will decide between Stanford and Oregon.

Murphy is a talent. - Redrum - 07-09-2011

He and Garnett,  out of Puyallup, WA  is another elite OL we would really, really like to sign, but UDub might be the leader and winner with him.  Hope  Murphy looks at the developing mess at Oregon and decides it looks like something to avoid.  But, you never know with young men.  Sometimes the us-against-the-world mentality in sanctioned programs really appeals to them.  Makes 'em feel like Spartans at Thermopylae or some such.  The whole Spartan thing makes for great movies but for crappy education and life decisions.

Choose your next words carefully, Persian...

Hey, the topic was Oregon, but yes, applies to the U..S..C, too - Redrum - 07-10-2011

But the comment referred to a crappy education as the cost of being seduced by the Spartan mindset.  Well,  let's go to the NCAA website and what do we find?  For the latest Grad. Success Rate numbers-- the GSR is the liberal one, the one that gives 6 yrs. to graduate and doesn't count transfers or those who leave if they are in good academic standing:

Oregon:  GSR 54 %    FGR (Federal)  53%    So close to half of the football players at Oregon never graduate in six years.  For a major conference university, that strikes me as a pretty crappy educational deal.    If a player really were interested in both an education and a football,  at Oregon the odds are pretty close to a coin toss.  Arizona is worst,  Oregon 8th.

BTW:
the U..S..C..      GSR 61%      FGR  51%  which places it in the lower half of the conference.

But,  your message was clear.  The Spartan mindset might be waiting every one of the U..S..C's opponents this year.

I'm not fond of Avinash. He's unabashed about inserting his 59er bias. For example, in his item about the Nwafor commitment, he says the player's commitment is far from solid because he's still taking visits, when the recruit is quoted elsewhere as explicitly saying those visits are for insurance. I think he exhibited similar bias when covering the Harbaugh departure.

I'm pretty sure Murphy is Stanford all the way provided that he's admitted. I also feel Shittu and Odenigbo are in the same boat.

Murphy is, but not the other two. Kal probably leads for both at this time.
