Generally better to be a Giant than Giant Killer methinks - Redrum - 07-06-2011
I got SO sick of being plucky, little Stanford. Got even sicker of being bumbling, incompetent Stanford.  Although I liked the idea of sneaking up on opponents, I like the idea of bludgeoning them into insensibility better.
Duke could pull off an upset. If we play like we played against Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, it could happen. David Cutcliffe is the archetype coach for overmatched teams. He tries to do it with an innovative offense to make up for the dearth of talent on defense. (His predecessor, Ted Roof, was a defensive oriented coach who put together a 4-44 record...so Cutcliffe, the offensive mind behind some of Tennessee's great teams probably has the right approach.) Got them a 5-win season in 2009. Duke's QB is Sean Renfree who Stanford also recruited. Guess he made the right choice of schools considering he would have been trying to beat out Andrew Luck.
So, if Duke gets in a groove and Stanford comes out flat or affected by the heat/humidity, Duke
could be a killer. If, the Stanford of 2010 shows up, the Giant Killers are in for a long day.

Wow, Stanford has really moved up in prestige. Listed as a giant twice (Duke and OSU).

So, who is going to see for themselves on September 10? Just bought my plane ticket and reserved my hotel. Alumni Office will be posting details of a Stanford tailgate next week.
Living down South, we're a long way from most Stanford games. But this year I'm going to be in that number. Anyone else?

In case you're curious, I helped out Blue Devil Nation with a preview of the Stanford-Duke game. You can see it over here:

They edited your piece. Cut out the part... - Redrum - 07-12-2011
...where you told them we were going to unscrew their heads and **** down their necks.
Other than that, pretty well put together, Hank.  Query: are they going to return the favor for your blog?
extra points to anyone who can identify the source of the quote

Yes, they'll be answering my questions down the road, but I don't see much sense in worrying about the Dookies until after we mop the floor with San Jose State.
As for the quote, it's definitely familiar. A Few Good Men?

Right genre in a general way.
Earlier, less famous, than my source - Redrum - 07-13-2011
hint: The most lasting impact of the movie was to introduce a non-actor in a memorable roll and that actor continues a long, somewhat narrow, career even today.
Ooh, ooh, I think I know that -

Full Metal Jacket(ree). Lee Ermey?
We have a winner - Redrum - 07-13-2011
Of course, guessing that Ermey's roll as a drill sergeant in Full Metal Jacket produced just about any profane, obscene, perverted, abusive, outrageous, degrading and imaginative insulting line....well, guessing that is like shooting fish in a barrel.
A star was born. What a jackwagon.

So is that the answer?
Ummmm, yes. Full Metal Jacket - Redrum - 07-15-2011
R. Lee Ermey.  The interesting questions are whether a) Did the screenplay writer copy/adapt that line from the earlier movie garvin cited? b) was that whole body of obscene abuse a pure work of artistry by the screenplay author ? c) Did Ermey have some input from the real world of drill sergeants into the dialog? It really is an amazing stream of abuse. There are some sites, IMDB most prominently, that display text versions of the movie dialog. With Ermey breaking down his recruits, it just goes on and on and on. A tour de force.

The way I heard it Kubrick had seen Ermey in other movies playing a DI and was reluctant to choose him for the part because he felt he didn't act mean enough. So, since he wanted the part, Ermey unleashed an spontaneous tirade of obscene, vulgar, and abusive language that convinced Kubrick that he had the right guy. Some of his lines do come from the book, though.

Interesting how people identify actors with the parts they play, especially if the part is the one they are known for.
Ermey's wife commented that people would come up to her and ask her "Does he act that way at home?"
I remember Tim Matheson saying he would get a lot of people, identifying him as Otter, asking him for advice on their love lives. He always informed them he was no expert on the subject, and that was only a part he had played.

You mean he really didn't pork Marlene Desmond?
I'm so disappointed.
