RE: AP All America - Snorlax94 - 08-21-2018

A few things I’d note:
1) While there are teams like Clemson and Alabama that have more preseason all Americans, none of the teams Stanford plays have more, the closest being Washington and ND.
2) To my recollection, Stanford usually ends the season with more All Americans than predicted preseason ones. Did anyone see Christian McCaffrey coming in 2015?
3) I read or heard in a recent David Shaw interview how the team lost a lot of close games last year, and lost several games to teams with less talent. I think he said something like, talent isn’t the problem, the team always has plenty of talent, it’s about how well the team plays together. Let’s hope the team can realize and show all their talent this year.

To our historians: when did Stanford last have an AA punter?  Dave Lewis?

RE: AP All America - Phogge - 08-22-2018

I think that there were no AA punters until the late 70’s. Lewis would have qualified. Punted for the Bengals. Mike Michel might have made it. Bobby Garrett did everything, offense, defense, place kicking, punting and was an AA. Picked off nine passes in 1953 in a ten game schedule.

I don't think Michel made AA. I could be wrong. Of course, there were fewer AA teams back then.

In Dave Lewis’ senior year only one service (The Sporting News) listed an AA punter. A guy named Ron Whitby. Jan Stenerud was the PK.

History says it takes 8 first + second team players making the All Conference team for a team to be Pac-12 champion.  It used to be 10 when there were 10 members.  Does Stanford have these eight?

Let's assume these 4
1. Love
2. Herbig
3. Smith
4. Bailey

Do you think Stanford has four more players who can make the first and second team units?  And who are they?

RE: AP All America - bbm233 - 08-22-2018

5. Little
6. Holder
7. Okereke
8. JJA-W
9. Burkett

RE: AP All America - JJJ - 08-22-2018

10. Irwin
11. Toner

RE: AP All America - Snorlax94 - 08-22-2018

On a previous thread about impact players, I posted my fortunate/stay healthy season scenario could look like this (5 All Americans, 15 All Pac 12)

#1. HMan winner Bryce Love

#2. All-American honorees Nate Herbig, Walker Little, Jesse Burkett, and Smith

#3. All Pac-12 Okereke, Barton, Alfieri, JJAW, Holder, AT Hall, Swann, Costello, Bailey, Scarlett-KR

#4. All Pac-12 Hon Mention: Fanaika, Buncom

In hindsight, pretty exuberant, but the 2015 Washington squad had 12+5 honorable mentions, and while Stanford has only 3 returning first and 2nd team all Pac 12 returning, they have 7 returning honorable mentions, or 10 returning total.

Bailey being named as a punter is phenomenal, considering that he is possibly even better at kickoffs.  It’s super impressive to be so good at both.  I don’t have any stats, but I’m not sure that I’ve ever seen a more dominant performance in kickoffs than what he did last year.  It seemed like 7-8 out of every 10 were completely unreturnable.  Looking forward to seeing more of that!

RE: AP All America - martyup - 08-24-2018

I'm looking forward to seeing very few punts and lots of kickoffs by Bailey.

RE: AP All America - OutsiderFan - 08-25-2018

Stanford had 9 first and second team All Pac-12 selections in 2015 and 8 in 2017.

I would agree on these as locks to likely 1st and 2nd team Stanford All Conference selections in 2018:

1. Love
2. Herbig
3. Smith
4. Bailey
5. Little
6. Okereke
7. Holder
8. Burkett
9. JJAW
10. Toner

This seems like enough to win the conference.  Of course, this begs the question on what do the other top schools like Washington and USC have?
