WBB: Summer reports - 81alum - 07-19-2018

The Fast Break Club has links to an interview with Kate and a report from the Pro-Am at Kezar that raise some interesting possibilities.  Kate is ecstatic that several of our returning players are "taking the big jump up" from last season.  And then we hear from a fan at Kezar that Nadia looks much improved around the basket.

The three freshmen are on campus, taking summer courses, the team is bonding, and everyone is getting more conditioning this summer than in prior summers.  Apparently the rules changed to 4 hours of conditioning and 4 hours with the coaches, when in prior years it was 2/6.

Anna Wilson is at home in Seattle and working with a private skills coach, trying to come back from two years of injuries.  That sounds positive too--that she is putting in so much effort over the summer and getting extra help.

I know this is the time of year when everyone is optimistic, but it sounds very good so far.

I'm probably missing something obvious, but I don't see Kate's interview.

Has anyone heard if they are playing tomorrow at Alameda Point?

RE: WBB: Summer reports - BobK - 07-20-2018

I hear the games in Alameda were cancelled.  Word of mouth though.  However the web site says no games this Saturday.

Brown leaves or has left to join the National 18U team.

No Alameda Games tonight now confirmed

Thanks, Bob.

I was so excited about the thought of being able to bike to a game.

Jamie Scott (formerly Jamie Wiesner OSU) was on Canadian team last year - not sure about this year

Apparently not.  Familiar names Emily Potter and Ruth Hamblin are on it.  Alyssa is the youngest player, and she made the team last year too. Getting this extra experience has to be good for her.

Hope Jerome gets some significant playing time since they are just exhibitions.  Kia Nurse, Achonwa, Kayla Alexander not on list because of WNBA commitment - can't think of any others

USA defeats Spain. Fran quiet game offensively but active on boards
https://www.usab.com/news-events/news/2018/07/wu17-game-5-esp.aspx

It  appears Brunelle and Brink get the least amount of playing time to this point. Other forums pointing out that the  style of play may not suit them

RE: WBB: Summer reports - CompSci87 - 07-27-2018

Fran gets steals and assists too. Long arms and quickness got the steals I noticed. And she had some nice passes for assists, such as a long outlet after a rebound.

So many players on this team are on BobK's recruiting list. Hope we get more of them in addition to Fran!

RE: WBB: Summer reports - 2006alum - 07-28-2018

Based on stats alone, Belibi seems like a do-everything player - the fact that in 15 minutes she had 7 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals all with zero turnovers is pretty great. She's had a ton of steals all tournament and almost no turnovers. Given her leaps and bounds growth as a high school player, I'm really looking forward to seeing what she can do on the Farm. We may be in for a couple of very special years ahead.

RE: WBB: Summer reports - BosCard - 07-28-2018

I think an under-appreciated part of Belibi's game is her strength.  We know she is a great leaper and is very fast down the court.  But that is all combined with great strength and a WNBA-ready body.  Fellow U17 team member Jordan Horston is uber-athletic as well and is approximately the same height (6'0").  But she only weighs 139 pounds.  Belibi is 6'1" and 190 pounds.  In the game against spain, I saw her out muscle a bigger heavier post for a rebound and then effortlessly sprint pass her in transition for an easy lay-up.

Next week the 18U starts with our Jenna Brown

RE: WBB: Summer reports - 2006alum - 07-28-2018

It's interesting to see that none of the coaches for the U18 team (Jeff Walz of Lousiville, Natasha Adair of Delaware, and Cori Close of UCLA) have incoming frosh playing on the U18 team. Do we know whether or not that is intentional (in either direction, either the selection of players or the selection of coaches)? If not, couldn't there be weird NCAA issues with a coach having the chance to coach their freshman player beyond the limited number of summer hours allowed per week? Aside from that, I would also think it could lead to weird issues of perceived favoritism, etc. Hadn't ever thought about this before, so wasn't sure if anyone had more insider knowledge on how that works.
