MLB Draft - JJJ - 06-04-2018

I was in self-imposed Stanford baseball purgatory and completely forgot about the draft until a Facebook post from Nico Hoerner's mom that "there's a new bear cub in town."

Congrats to Nico and family for going in the 1st round (24th pick overall)!

Kris Bubic with the 40th pick (CBA) to KC Royals.
Congratulations!

24. Chicago Cubs: SS Nico Hoerner, Stanford University

I'm a little surprised the Cubs passed on a couple of the college arms that were available here, but Hoerner is an offensive-minded middle infielder with a track record of hitting in college. Those are hard to find, and he should continue to hit at the next level, with good power for his position. A lot of scouts see Hoerner more as a second baseman than a shortstop, but he should definitely be able to stay up the middle.

Very happy he's a Cub, although the Cub middle fielders, Baez and Russell, are young, athletic, and very talented. Can Nico play the OF? Rizzo and Bryant aren't going anywhere so no shot at going to a corner bag.

"Hoerner began his college career at second base before moving to shortstop. Esquer has no doubts about Hoerner’s arm strength at the pro level.
“His arm is fine,” Esquer said. “He can play shortstop at the major-league level.”
McLeod said the Cubs’ preference is to leave Hoerner at shortstop.
“Down the road, if we ask him to move somewhere else, I think he’d do it flawlessly because of who he is,” McLeod said. “He’s a talented baseball player.”
Hoerner believes he can play shortstop “at a high level. (But) I can play every position if need be. I just want to win games.”
Coincidentally, Esquer played in the Angels organization in the late 1980s, when his minor-league hitting instructor was current Cubs manager Joe Maddon.
“Joe is going to love what Nico is all about,” Esquer said. “Nico has a great clock for the game. He knows when he has to make a throw quickly and when he has more time. Nico is a game changer.”"

A little bit off topic but Oklahoma's QB expected to succeed Baker Mayfield was drafted 8th overall by the A's. He says he will play football next year. TBD if he'll sign the pro baseball contract as well.

"From the San Francisco Chronicle:

Eric Kubota, the A’s director of scouting, said that Murray was too “unique a talent” to pass up, so the A’s have no problem with him missing baseball this summer, playing football in the fall and reporting to Oakland’s minor-league complex next spring.

“The risk of the football, in our opinion, was outweighed by the upside on the baseball field,” Kubota said. “We’re totally on board with his desire to play quarterback at Oklahoma and frankly, we’re kind of excited to be Oklahoma fans for 12 games. That’s not easy for a Cal guy to say.”"

Note:  His uncle, Calvin Murray, was a first round draft choice of the SF Giants in 1992.

Based on what I read, Kyler Murray has the tools necessary to be a solid major league center fielder.  If nothing else, he will be among the wealthiest QB’s in college football this fall.

Beck to the Braves

RE: MLB Draft - JJJ - 06-06-2018

From the Atlanta Journal -Constitution:

Braves jump at Stanford’s Tristan Beck with fourth-round pick
June 05, 2018
By The Braves went high school arm and then college bat with their first two choices in the 2018 MLB draft. So they went with a more seasoned arm with their next pick.
Tristan Beck, a right-hander from Stanford, became the Braves’ fourth round selection, No. 112 overall.

It’s the third time Beck’s been drafted. He didn’t sign with the Brewers out of high school, and passed on the Yankees last year.
He missed the 2017 season due to a back injury. He leaped from 29th round to the fourth round with a healthy 2018.

There was a lot of discussion during the broadcast of Stanford's tournament and late season games that Branton has a job lined up with Disney, and noting that he had expressed the intention of doing that rather than pro baseball. Though it didn't sound as if he had entirely made up his mind, and I never heard Branton himself on the topic.

Kinamon probably has potential to be drafted a lot higher if he comes back for a healthy year. Whether that ultimately puts him ahead on a baseball career is not so clear. I have no idea what he wants to do, though the statement that he would redshirt 2018 seems to be some indication he is considering returning for another year.

Stanford has the most first-round draft picks.

1. Stanford (24)
T2. ASU (21)
T2. Texas (21)
4. Florida State (20)
5. Vanderbilt (16)

Yup, signed for around the slot value of $4.6mln. Not a bad first job. It says he will only use one of his 2 remaining years of football eligibility and go to baseball fulltime next spring.
