Baseball vs UW -

Tonight Stanford begins its final series of the season up in Seattle vs UW.
Here is the official site article on the series:
http://gostanford.com/news/2018/5/22/baseball-pac-12-title-within-reach.aspx
Stanford enters this series with a magic number of 1 to win the conference title, but it is a slightly odd 1 as it is over three separate teams, one of whom we are playing (UW) and the other two play each other (OSU vs UCLA).
So, a win tonight wraps up the conference title, but we won't get there tonight simply by opponents losing. That's because only one of OSU/UCLA will lose tonight and a loss by UW means a win by us.
Also of interest, as far as our standing vs OSU goes, their tie in the Sunday extra innings game vs WSU is effectively a loss for OSU given that they have a tie-breaker over us by winning the head to head series.
UW is an interesting team, with the sort of results that really hurt the conference.
They have had a good conference run, going 18-9 so far to tie for third place with UCLA, one half game behind OSU.
However, out of conference they have only gone 10-13 despite a not very difficult schedule (for example, their non-conference RPI SOS is #75 compared to Stanford at #27, OSU at #53 and UCLA at #45. Their non-conferences resume includes disasters such as losses to Portland, UT Rio Grande Valley (that I didn't know existed), and 3/4 to Illinois State. That sort of thing really hurts the entire conference in terms of RPI and perception.
At the moment, UW sits at #70 in RPI. As I understand things, no team with 18 or more Pac 12 (or its predecessor conferences) wins has ever not made the NCAA tournament. On the other hand, I heard no team has ever received an at large bid with an RPI as high as #70. UW's RPI will probably go up this weekend merely by playing Stanford, but might need to sweep us to make the field.
UW has got where they are more on pitching than offense. They are #8 in the conference in team batting avg, slugging percentage, and runs scored as well as a bunch of other offensive categories (quite consistent actually). They are #4 in the conference in team ERA and runs allowed, behind Stanford, UCLA, OSU (in that order, Stanford is nationally #3 in team ERA).
Of note:
As he did in our earlier Th, F, Sa series, Esquer is keeping T. Beck and Bubic pitching on their regular days (Friday and Saturday) and starting Miller tonight. Presumably B. Beck will be ready to go for long relief if needed.
UW's top pitcher is Joe Demers (6-3, 2.34 ERA), who seems to have been around a long time (though I think only a junior). Demers has usually been a Saturday (day 2) starter, which probably means he will go on Friday as most coaches don't seem to follow Esquer's efforts to keep his main guys on the same day of the week.
Demers is #2 in the conference in ERA (not quite sure minimum requirements to make the list), with B. Beck #3 and Bubic #4.
UW's most recent day 1 starter has been Lucas Knowles (4-5, 4.03), and day 3 starter Jordan Jones (5-3. 3.53).

I'll just put Fitzgerald's SFGate piece here.
"What Snow didn’t prepare him for was catching a pop-up barehanded, as the sophomore did last weekend in a game against Washington State. He ran in from first, tracking down a pop by catcher Robert Teel, who — on his way up the line — inadvertently knocked off Daschbach’s glove.
So Daschbach made the grab with his bare hands, barely in foul territory. Teel would have been out, anyway, because of runner’s interference, but Daschbach got his moment of fame. The Pac-12 Network’s clip of the play was shown on ESPN’s “SportsCenter.” It has been seen more than 1.9 million times on Instagram."

I'd guess the Pac 12 All Star team will have Heimlich, Demerrs, and Bubic as the top three starters. Fortunately for us--a team that struggles against off-speed throwing lefties, Demers is a right handed who just brings it, but has a good change up and curve. And I'd swear he has a screw ball--it sure seems to break back in on right handers--but I may be optically impaired.
He threw a perfect game early in the season, one of only 15 nine-inning perfect games n the last 60 years of NCAA baseball.
Not sure if their third baseman is consistently brilliant but he made two great plays in the perfect game. And my guess is Demers gets good fielding generally because he's not a strike out artist like Heimlich or, to a lesser extent, Bubic. Batters can get a bat on his stuff but his late movement means a lot of those batted balls aren't going far.
A really good pitcher. This should be the tough game of the series. And home field helps them too, of course.

I have the UCLA@OSU game (the game before ours on Pac12 Networks) on in the background and caught the back and forth of the announcers.
Since the College World Series was established, a west coast team has always won in years ending in "8"--I suppose I must have heard this 10 years ago, but don't really remember it.
1948: SC
1958: SC
1968: SC
1978: SC
1988: Stanford
1998: SC
2008: Fresno State
2018: ???
More accurately, they were all from California, but I think the announcers were hedging their bets because OSU has won in the past and is tough this year.

So, it bodes well for all the west coast teams this year! :)

OSU shuts out UCLA 2-0 (Heimlich now 14-1).
Our game will start on time on the right channel.
Go Cardinal!
Uh-oh, they sent a lefty on the mound. Hope he's not soft-tossing!
Esky with a quick hook, as Miller doesn't last a full inning, giving up a 3-run homerun and we're down 3-0.
OMG Christian Robinson ROBS the Huskies of an almost-certain 3-run dinger in the 2nd!
Still 3-0 after 2 (which is much better than 6-0, still B2).
I can't watch for a while; I hope to return to a better score.

Unfortunately... At least, we have this highlight of the game:

Oh wow. Because I'm a glutton for punishment, I watched the DVR. It was actually a 4-0 ballgame until the top of the 8th, and included men on 2nd and 3rd in the 6th with Hoerner up, and a Tawa ground-rule double in the 8th that would have scored Branton had it stayed in the park. A nice defensive play by their 2B ended that inning. I've seen enough to know that UW was taking the game as a must-win situation. And their RPI will improve. I wish T. Beck and Bubic the best.

The biggest surprise to me from Thursday night's game was that when Miller was pulled, B. Beck did not come in - or come in at all.
Now that may simply not be something Esquer plans to do - Beck has only come on in relief of Miller twice this year (2.2 innings in game 3 vs Arizona and 3.0 innings vs USF). Still, there aren't any more midweek games to save Beck for, and he would certainly seem to be a top candidate for long relief if he isn't going to be a starter.
Anyone think they have insight?
[One thought - Esquer wanted a lefty as UW had four(?) hitters from the left side. That could be why Miller got the start in the first place.]

I have no insight, but I thought Esquer wanted a lefty in there as well. Except that their lefties (especially the top 2 hitters) seemed to be tough to pitch to.

DeMers came on to finish the game: 1 1/3 innings but only 12 pitches.

We're gonna see him as a starter, though not quite clear if it will be tonight or tomorrow.
Hope he'll need more than 3 pitches per batter next go-round.

Heads-up: the main Pac12 Network channel still airing the game prior to ours.
You can catch it on HDTV at the Pac12 Washington channel.
We seem to be up 1-0 but I'm DVRing so will catch up later.

3-1 UW now in bottom of the first. Hoping we can get the 1 win we need for the outright conference title tonight. Longer it goes, the more the pressure increases. UCLA has also not been doing its part, in losing the first two to Oregon State.

Now 3-2 UW.
Our magic number remains 1

Card lose at Washington 4-2. It is going to come down to the final day, between three teams, for the Pac-12 crown.
RE: Baseball vs UW -
d4cohn - 05-26-2018
As Stanford-UW gets underway this afternoon, UCLA currently holds a 3-0 lead over Oregon State. Stanford wins the Pac-12 outright with a win regardless of the OSU result, and loses the title (tiebreak or otherwise) with a loss (regardless of the OSU result), but if that result holds in Corvallis, that means it is winner-take-all between Washington and Stanford for the conference crown.

Game 3 is underway. DeMers gives up a double to Hoerner but gets Dash out.
Bubic to take on the Husky bats.

Pretty close to 100% sure the Pac 12 doesn’t use a tie breaker. For seeding in a Pac 12 tournament yes
2-0 Washington right off the bat
RE: Baseball vs UW -
JJJ - 05-26-2018
Bubic got the first 2 hitters, then a walk, a single, and a double (and another walk). We're down 2-0 after 1.
For the series so far, we've only led for a half inning when we scored in the top of the 1st yesterday.
They flashed that UCLA has a 3-0 lead over OSU.
Brandon Wulff ties it with a two-run homer!

They just explained what I was wondering.
Stanford wins and it's an outright champion.
If UW wins, then we're conference co-champions (but they get the automatic berth).
RE: Baseball vs UW -
JJJ - 05-26-2018
Very unfortunate sequence B5 w/ 2 outs, and their speediest runner on 1st.
Their #3 hitter hits a grounder to the left side that glances off a diving Tawa's glove, changing direction away from Hoerner who was backing up, rolling softly into left. Stowers comes charging in but doesn't pick it up cleanly. They send the runner who was on 3rd by then, Stowers hurries a throw home off line (a good throw would've nailed him) and we're down 3-2 on an unearned run.
Levi Jordan (who hit the 3-run homer in the first game) ended Bubic's outing with a solo shot to left.
We're now down 4-2 with Palisch on in relief, B6 nobody out.
Redemption for Stowers as he leaves the yard to lead off T7.
We're down 4-3.
UCLA leads OSU 4-1.
Little on the mound B8, still down 4-3.
I should stop updating. He gives up a double with a lucky runner on, so now we're down 5-3.
However, they announce that UCLA beat OSU so Stanford is a Pac 12 Champion.
