Golden State Warriors - OutsiderFan - 05-21-2018

The Golden State Warriors on this board?  There are umpteen threads about the S.F. Giants playing regular season games, but nothing about the Warriors, who by far are on the greatest run a Bay Area team not named De La Salle Football has ever had, and two wins from their fourth NBA Finals appearance in a row.

Is there reason to believe there aren't W's fans on this board?

+1. I've wondered the same myself. We have a ton of college basketball fans, so why hasn't this translated over? Maybe not the same legacy that the Giants have? I feel like until recently the team has been more of an east bay thing, and their colors certainly gel more with our rivals across the bay. But I'd definitely be game for starting some threads if there's a critical mass?

I think you will get an argument that the Niners run under Walsh is at least as good as the Warriors.

And the Bay Bombers have by far the greatest run by an area pro franchise.

RE: How come nobody talks about... - BostonCard - 05-21-2018

I think that just reflects the interests of the members here.  There is a critical mass of 4-5 frequent posters on this board who are Giants fans and during the spring and summer post about the Giants.  There does not appear to be a similar critical mass of Warriors fans, or if there are, they are not frequent posters.  Or maybe there is a large such group just waiting for one person to start a thread.

I'm a Warriors fan, but I go elsewhere to talk about them.

Well I live in New Orleans, so I follow the Pelicans :).

That said, I do admire the Warriors, except for mixed feelings about the occasional antics of Draymond Green.

And while there are plenty of other sites to follow NBA teams, there is no better place on the Web for Stanford sports than right here on The CardBoard.

In any event,

Geaux Cardinal!

I'm a brobdingnagian Warriors fan, ever since the early 1970s.  Can still recite the 1974-75 full roster.  They flew commercial in those days, and we went to pick up my stepmother flying in from Phoenix.  The whole team disembarked, including Rick Barry in a knee-length, pimped-out rabbit coat.  Just awesome.  My favorite player on that team Was Phil Smith, really liked Keith Wilkes.

RE: How come nobody talks about... - Canalejas - 05-21-2018

I've found myself following the Warriors a bit more than my childhood favorite Lakers for the last several years.  Which makes me feel like a gross bandwagoner, actually.  So my standard line is that while I am very happy for the Warriors' success, I can't quite bring myself to fully embrace them like I do Stanford teams (of course.)

I didn't mention it in OP, but the W's even have a big Stanford connection in owner Joe Jacob.  And they are moving to the West Bay and S.F. soon, so closer to Stanford too.

Speaking of Lacob, he grew up in Boston area and was a giant Celtics fans.  Guessing he's pretty geeked about possibility of W's vs Celts in NBA Finals!

At the professional level, my interests are baseball, football, cycling and hockey.  Since this is a Stanford board, I do not think it is appropriate to blather about anything other than #1 (and then only during the spring/summer).  The fall and winter are reserved exclusively for the Cardinal.

By the way, has anyone noticed that Joseph Bramlett is playing well again after struggling with injuries for years.  He is playing on the web.com circuit in an effort to qualify for the PGA Tour.

RE: How come nobody talks about... - qwerty49 - 05-21-2018

I love the Warriors, went to quite a few games in 74-75-76.  I remember the first time Dr J came to town.  The first time he touched the ball, he had Barry posted up about 10ft away from the basket.  He turned for the jumper, and Rick blocked it.  Welcome to the NBA!

But the NBA these days is pretty cartoony.  Awesome athletic abilities and Warriors at full speed are something to watch.  But somehow I can't get that excited about pro basketball.  It can be like watching a video game.

I'm a fan of the women's game, especially because my daughter played in high school, but that can often be the reverse of the NBA --- like a root canal, watching for someone to hit a shot sometimes.  But Tara gets the most out of the Cards she's dealt (pun intended).

I don't follow golf at all but he was my roommate senior year (random draw). Really nice guy, hope it goes well for him.

Yeah I feel the same way. Given how much discussion there's been of the Giants, why not? I agree that I wouldn't want to talk about the Warriors as much during the football season, but it's a pretty slow time of year and it's such a thrilling time for the Warriors.

I certainly would ask this informed audience for advice if and when I finally try to get some Warriors tickets (I first discovered this board when Googling for advice about attending Stanford football games). And recently I've been learning more about and increasing my appreciation for basketball due to my older son's interest (which, in turn, is probably related to the Warrior's success).

Because they're not the Jordan Bulls. THAT was a great team with various characters in each of the three-peats.

Only one Bay Area team has the greatest star of all time in their sport’s history. Mays, Montana, Wilt were close but nobody dominated their sport for so long as Charlie O’Connell.

What about Joan Weston or Ann Calvello?

Don't forget Jarron Collins as assistant coach.  They also got Ros Gold-Onwude her start as a sideline reporter before she moved onto the national TNT gig.  Of course, they stole Mike Montgomery from us, ruining arguably the greatest era of Stanford basketball.  The Warriors also drafted Tim Young with the 3rd to last pick of the 2nd round in the NBA draft, one pick before Manu Ginobili (who is still playing as of this year!).

Perhaps more relevant to the current team is that they are working out Reid Travis this week (still hoping that he will come back to Stanford for 1 more year!)

RE: How come nobody talks about... - Mick - 05-22-2018

Tonight is a pretty important game for the Warriors.  Win it, and it's 3-1, brobdingnagian advantage, series basically over.  Lose it, and it's 2-2, momentum on Houston Rockets side with the Rockets having home court advantage.

The Scottie Pippen of the Warriors (according to Coach Kerr) is Andre Iguodala.  He's out for the remainder of the series.  The Warriors have won 16 straight at home where they have an average 17.9 point differential.  On the road?  Just 1.8 points, on average.

RE: OT -- How come nobody talks about... - Phogge - 05-22-2018

Weston, Calvello, Tuffie Brasoon, Judy McGuire and others competed for the top spot for years. Everyone targeted Charlie. The Pinnacle.

BTW, Roller Derby had the REAL Walt Harris not some faker posing as a football coach.

RE: OT -- How come nobody talks about... - BobK - 05-22-2018

Lecob has been a long time Stanford men and women basketball season ticket holder. Maybe was at this point.
