SFG BB - Mick - 05-19-2018

On the 16th day of a 17 day streak with no games off, Giants are approach .500 again today.  They are 23-24, Stratton got the win with five shaky innings.  Some highlights:

Crawford was hitting .189 on May 1.  Eighteen days later, he is hitting .302.  Belt at .308, Posey at .307.  Much maligned Gorkys Hernandez is hitting .272.  McCutchen and Crawford had three hits, backup Gomez, Belt, Posey and Longoria had two each.  BCraw homered.

Will Smith had a three up/three down inning and has given up zero runs in eight appearances.  Johnson, Dyson, Watson also gave up zero runs.

Mac Williamson homered in the first night of his rehab assignment.  He's hitting .465, and Alen Hanson (my new fave 2B) was hitting .403 in AAA.

BTW, the Giants are on path to strike out 300 more times than their worst strikeout season in history.  Current path is 1,544 Ks, prior worst season was 1,235.

Just for the heck of it:  Chris Heston, 12-11 in 2015, 22nd rookie to throw a no hitter in baseball history, had years of arm problems, currently has a 2.70 ERA for the Sacramento RiverCats.  In 3 1/3 innings, he's given up one run, one hit, two walks and struck out five.  In his no-hitter, he also gave up no walks and there were no errors, but he hit three batters.  In fact, he led the league in hit batters that year with 13.  He's 30 years old.  Will be interesting to see if he makes it back.

Steven Duggar's OPS is under .700, he's batting .243 and he has two home runs in 169 ABs.  Meanwhile, Stanford's Austin Slater is first on the RiverCats among starters with a .385 average and a 1.137 OPS.  He has no errors in the field and two double plays.  Duggar, BTW, has seven errors.  No joke.

Waiting for a reply from Bobbbbbbbbbbbb. I’m sure he had a testosterone spike after watching the Giants score 9.

RE: OT: SFG BB - BobK - 05-19-2018

Hosted a family reunion today. I’m the oldest.  Made an announcement that I’m signing with the Giants.   Since Crawford is older than me and hitting 302 then I could play.

302 !!!!!

RE: OT: SFG BB - Phogge - 05-19-2018

He will still end up at .235.

302 !!!!!

It was Panda and Blanco who spotted the flaw in Crawford’s batting stance.  Once he made the change (holding his hands higher), he took off.  He is on track to become an All-Star at this rate.

Time for trivia - Who was the first SF Giant to hit for the cycle? Who was the first SF Giant to hit for the cycle at home (a former teammate of mine in youth baseball)?

RE: SFG BB - Phogge - 05-20-2018

First Giant, Bill Terry or Travis Jackson?

First teammate, Chris Speier?

Next question, which former teammate of mine was the first native born Giant? Which HS’s did he attend?

1) First “SF” Giant...

2)  Correct - The Pride of Alameda: Chris Speier

First native born Giant?  Dirty Al Gallagher?

RE: SFG BB - Phogge - 05-20-2018

Harvey Kuenn, Felipe Alou, Jim Ray Hart, Jim Davenport?

Gallagher is correct. Went to two HS. Which ones?

Well done - Jim Ray Hart.  I find it interesting that Mays never hit for the cycle as an SF Giant.  I don’t know if he ever accomplished the feat as a NY Giant.  Lastly, the SF Giants have hit for ten cycles.  Eight were in road games and two at Candlestick.

Gallagher - I would guess Lincoln.  I have no idea of the other school.

RE: SFG BB - Mick - 05-20-2018

On a non-trivial topic, the Giants won again, 9-5, to take the homestand four games to three.  Giants had thirteen hits today, as Hernandez, Belt and Hundley hit home runs.  Belt had a nice assist to throw out a Rockie at home.  Game ended with Story trying to take third on a wild pitch that bounced in the air, Posey leapt (as it were) and fired a strike to Longoria who tagged out Story on the head, thereby ending the game at third with the final out, a massive no-no when it comes to the unwritten rules.

Also, Posey hit a triple so I bought a lottery ticket.  There must be some magical odds somewhere.

Crawford’s throw home to nail the runner today brought back memories of Game 7 in the 2014 World Series.  At the time, there were questions regarding whether Gordon should have tried to score after Blanco kicked his base hit around the outfield.  Once again, Crawford showed why that would have been a fool’s errand.  He has a great arm (his throw home today was 90+ mph)...

RE: SFG BB - Phogge - 05-20-2018

Outstanding throw. Even with Posey’s injury I think the no collision rule sucks.

Gallagher attended SI for a year and Mission for three. Best player there since Triandos and probably no one better since.

My first boss was a close friend of Gallagher's at SCU.  Said that Gallagher held a guy by his ankles out of a third floor dorm window.  More than once.

This just in: The San Francisco Giants have the most offensive punch in the NL West.

They have the highest OPS at .732.
They're tied for the most runs with the Dodgers at 201.
They have the highest team batting avg at .261.
They have the highest team OBP at .320.

Fielding?  Last place in the league at .980.

Pitching?  Gave up the most runs in the division.

Sigh.

Change of topic to the upcoming draft.....

It appears SF and Detroit are both looking closely at Joey Bart, C, Ga. Tech.  If the Tigers go for Casey Mize from Auburn, could it be that SF drafts another Georgia-born catcher?  The last one has done pretty well.  On the other hand, if Detroit takes him, the door is open for the Giants to select Mize.....

RE: SFG BB - Phogge - 05-22-2018

I think there is room for in the Hall for another Mize.
