NCAA Women's Golf - Spiny_Norman - 05-17-2018

The NCAA women's golf championship starts tomorrow, Friday. Stanford is paired with Duke and U.SC for the first 2 rounds. They tee off on #1 beginning at 12:15 pm central/10:15 am pacific. That means the team will begin early on Saturday, probably at 7:30 am local time.

The format is 4 days/72 holes of medal play with the low 4 scores counting each day. At the end of 54 holes, there will be a cut. Only the low 15 teams will advance to the final medal round on Monday. After 72 holes, the lowest 8 teams will advance to match play. Quarterfinals and semifinals to be competed next Tuesday, finals on Wednesday. The Golf Channel starts its live coverage on Monday.

Stanford's lineup:
1 - Andrea Lee (soph)
2 - Mika Liu (frosh)
3 - Albane Valenzuela (soph)
4 - Ziyi (Emily) Wang (soph)
5 - Shannon Aubert (senior)

Lee, Valenzuela and Aubert were on the team last year that lost in the semifinals. Aubert will be playing in her 4th NCAA tournament. It's a strong lineup, maybe the strongest that Stanford has fielded in the 4 year run starting with the 2015 national championship. The team won its first tournament of the calendar year at the regionals. Could they be peaking now?

Alabama, UCLA, and Arkansas are loaded.

UCLA looks vulnerable in match play, however, as their #4 Bethay Wu played horribly in the regionals and their number five isn't good. The Bruins also depend heavily on racking up birdies on par fives. Karsten Creek's par fives are long and hard. Add into this the Bruins' demoralizing collapse in last year's regionals, and it's possible to see them failing to advance. Not a good bet but a great bet if you get the odds.

Arkansas is lethal but their number five is playing terribly, too. They're a brobdingnagian favorite to get to match play but they're vulnerable there.

Alabama is loaded. Period.

It looked like this would be the toughest course ever to host an NCAA championship.
We may have underestimated it.

More than two years ago, as she prepared to write the essays on her Stanford application, Albane Valenzuela reached the prompt asking prospective students to describe a person who had a significant impact on their life.

Valenzuela needed no time to choose her subject.

She wrote about her younger brother, Alexis, who was diagnosed with autism as an infant. He barely talked at all in his first five years — and now, at 16, he speaks three languages and hopes to follow his sister in landing a college scholarship to play golf.

Hulk, you don't expect this tournament to produce scores like the ones at the men's championship at Purdue in 2008, do you? UCLA won at +42.

The course has a lot of up and down and wind will be a factor especially in the afternoons. It will play longer than the listed yardage. It's going to take a lot of patience to work your way around the course. Not sure if Stanford has played a course like this during the season.

The Chronicle had a feature on Albane Valenzuela yesterday. She talks about her autistic brother and how he inspires her. She also reveals that she has been suffering from a nagging wrist injury.

Stanford's women have played quite a few Fazio-designed courses, but the courses are concentrated East of the Mississippi and the South. So the SEC and ACC players have seen more of them, but not enough to matter.

Most Fazio courses are designed to be photographed and to impress the club's members guests. This one in Stillwater was designed to attract elite college golfers to Stillwater, Oklahoma and, perhaps as part of that, earn a reputation for being a stern test of talent. To some, that means a course where par is a great score--courses that are simply too difficult for most of us to enjoy. The slope rating for this course alone tells me that's what Fazio went for here.

The Stanford practice facility has a Fazio section with the slopes and bunker configurations that Fazio favors. The players have gotten the feel for Fazio bunkers and sand. They'll be fine. Home, or even familiar course advantage, often isn't apparent in college golf. And by match play, a player has a very good read of how the holes play.

The men's set up will be even harder, simply because 320 yard drives can miss far more than 250 yard drives. It sounds like it's going to be fairways and greens, fairways and greens. The teams built around bomb and gouge aren't going to get to match play.

I just realized this. The first hole is a par five.

How many well-regarded courses start with a par-five? Riviera and. . . ?

Offends my perhaps old-fashioned sensibility. And reminds me, again, why I don't like Fazio's courses.

1, 9 and 18 are par 5s. Which means that long stretches of the course are grind-it-out par 3s and 4s. This course is going to be a mental challenge as much as anything.

But I am concerned that the golf course is too long for some of the Stanford players. It may play better for long hitting teams like U.SC. But Stanford does not have to win the stroke play part of the competition, just be top 8.

The most offensive part of Karsten Creek to me is the green fee for unaccompanied guests - $350! That is a high end resort rate. I wonder how much outside play the course actually gets. Maybe the wealthy alumni members pay enough to keep the course in the black.

Hulk, one other course that starts with a par 5 - Spyglass.

an inauspicious start for us: 5 bogeys, one double, and 3 pars. I know nothing about golf, but that does not seem like a good ratio. Our playing partner U.S.C is at -3, 8 ahead of us. Fortunately there's a lot of golf to play.

Re the length of the course, the listed 6328 sounds standard. Seems like every course the women play come in around that yardage.

And if the stats from the ANA Inspiration were accurate, Valenzuela is among the longest hitters in college golf.

These first six holes we're on have been brutal for the field. The second six have played much easier.

classic courses: East Lake (9s have been flipped), LA North and Riviera (3 really good tracks)
others: Barnbougle, Copperhead, Spyglass, Doonberg (tough, tough, meh, a Norman course - eventually he'll get one right, may be?)

tough start for Stanford: 6 pars, 5 bogeys and 2 doubles.

Could be worse. Ole Miss has 7 triples and are at +27 (through 12 - 17). Of course, we are only through 1-4 holes, so it could get much worse.

TWO birdies! But then we gave them back with a double bogey. Right now Shannon Aubert is our low player at +2; everyone else is at +5 or above! What's going on??? Maybe short and straight wins the day.
We need to turn this around on the back 9 or we're going to dig us a big hole to climb out of.

Jennifer Kupcho of Wake Forest lost the individual title last year when she lost the lead after making triple bogey 7 on the 71st hole. She must be thrilled to have a chance to redeem herself. She shot 65 today which was 5 shots better than anyone else who played this morning. The course average was 78 so she was 13 shots better than the field. Phenomenal.

The leader (U.S.C.) is at +4, but at +21 the course is being especially brutal to us. We're tied for 19th with 5 holes left to play, 4 teams from the cut line of 15th after three rounds. Didn't see this coming.
