Questions of the Mod - BobK - 04-23-2018

Can we use Stanford time and not East Coast time please.
Can I have my name back?  I was BobK now Bobbk as the new b's was my sign in
I want my reputation back.   Waaa

RE: Questions of the Mod - qwerty49 - 04-23-2018

I guess a lot of us are curmudgeons who resist change, but I wonder what was “broken” that had to be “fixed?”  This new format is not very user friendly.

The “new” label is now gone which is really irritating - now you have to click on each thread to see if there’s something new. And you can’t go down or go up with one click either.

Plus there’s a new character that looks like a capital A at the end of almost every sentence I read.  Is that because my iPhone won’t read the punctuation font?

Umm...what is “subscribing” to a thread and why should I do it?

Don't worry Bob - I bought your identity a few years ago on eBay and I am now you. BTW you owe me $5647 for back taxes. ?

RE: Questions of the Mod - martyup - 04-23-2018

The green arrow to the left of the topic title indicates there are new posts. Click on the green arrow and it acts just like the old "new" button.

The new platform didn't remember your read posts from the old platform. Therefore, you will need to find your last unread post on each topic. After that, the green arrow will take you to the first unread post in each topic. I miss emojis. :(

You can change the display time in your profile. At the top left there's a green icon that says "User CP", it's under options on that page.

Yvonne has said a few times that there were a bunch of issues on the back end with the old software, and it essentially couldn't be upgraded any more. There was a significant amount of testing that went into finding something new, and this is what Yvonne and the testers picked (I was a tester for a while but missed the last few testing windows, having a toddler really eats into your random internet time).

The capital A is just from old posts, going forward it shouldn't appear.

Subscriptions are alerts to updates to threads you've posted/subscribed to. You can change your default subscription behavior in your User CP.

One thing to note is that apparently Avatar size isn't constrained any more, Marty's is entirely too large. Yvonne, is that something changeable on the back end?

RE: Questions of the Mod - BobK - 04-23-2018

Well took several hours but got on via my phone. Sad that we had to change so much. Sad we might lose posters

QWERTY you owe me $$ because my name was valuable. Of course here I’ve lost my name

RE: Questions of the Mod - OutsiderFan - 04-23-2018

New software is always an adjustment. This new platform is better if only because it embeds tweets and videos. Nice job, Yvonne, and co.

Still don't know WTF happened to the recruiting thread. Would appreciate getting it back in its fully intact state.

RE: Questions of the Mod - admin - 04-23-2018

You haven't lost your name. Go to UserCP and change it. On the left side of the menu is an item called, strangely enough, Change Username.

RE: Questions of the Mod - Goose - 04-23-2018

Mods may already know this, but we are being majorly hacked/spammed. If you look in guidelines area, you will see several obviously improper messages. Hopefully it will be possible to figure out how they got in and close the loophole.

Bobbk, you can change your name to anything you want using the UserCP. Take a moment to poke around the UserCP. You'll find you have many more options than with the previous software.

(Oh, yeah, and I've given you reputation using the "rate" button under your post.)

Thanks, Goose. I've just added a new plug-in that seems to be zapping them as they register. Oddly, when we were testing, we didn't get a single spammer.

As an old curmudgeon I preferred the time back in the day when Millard Fillmore was president.

I don't see "Change Username".  At the User CP Home, I see "Edit Profile", "Change Password", "Change Email", "Change Avatar", "Change Signature", "Edit Options".  Nor is it under "Edit Options" or "Edit Profile".    When I search each of those pages for "name", I only find a place to set an AIM Screen Name.

RE: Questions of the Mod - stupac2 - 04-23-2018

I see the "Edit username" option, but perhaps it's part of having elevated permissions (the beta testers have been given temporary moderator status as part of the transition). Previous boards I've moderated had the ability to view the board as a different user, but I don't see that here so I'm not sure if my hypothesis is correct. @"admin", perhaps you have that ability? Or perhaps that option needs to be enabled on the back end.

RE: Questions of the Mod - M T - 04-23-2018

I find, and I think new people will find, the conjoined frames of

PM Find .... [Edit] [Delete] Reply Quote Report
POSTER                                         info
* * * *

confusing.  They are the same background color, separated by a relatively thin line, but represent information about two different messages.

I kept clicking on the "Reply" to the wrong message.  If you can make that separator between the two lines much bigger, or cause alternating background colors for them (so the POSTER line above the message and the PM/Find line below have the same background, but they alternate colors, or something like that).

I will miss the possibility of message-specific titles.

This made me laugh.  Paraphrasing Warren Buffett, it took 20 years to build your reputation and just 5 minutes to wipe it out!  Not to worry - from what I've seen over the last couple years, your reputation is well earned and you'll have it back in no time.  Heck, you're already sporting 2 points!

My own view is that change is often uncomfortable, but good.  After some initial growing pains, I'm sure everyone will come to appreciate the new UX and its many features, such as the ability to embed videos.  That is going to be brobdingnagian!  (Yep, word substitution still works!  Also H.uge!)

Perhaps the most pressing issue stemming from the migration has been its impact on my mission-critical Sagehen avatar, whose normally gaunt, fierce and noble appearance has been squished and distorted quite ignominiously.  I assume that by re-uploading the image to my profile, I will be able to correct the problem and restore the bird to its true glory. ;-)

RE: Questions of the Mod - CompSci87 - 04-23-2018

A few minor things:

Next Oldest / Next Newest should be just Older / Newer.

There's no way to go directly to the last page of a multi-page thread. Although there's a go to page fill-in box, nothing tells you the number of the last page. Guessing too big a number sends you to the first page.

The [url] bbcode feature from old posts doesn't work.

Unicode characters outside the 7-bit ASCII range from old posts were converted incorrectly. Apparently either the conversion script thought the old posts were in ISO Latin-1, or worse, the new software is using that instead of Unicode UTF-8. That's why so many old posts have lots of  characters in them: UTF-8 nonbreaking space characters were incorrectly converted. Also the tricky upside down c a l substitution turned into garbage because all the characters were multibyte UTF-8.

On the mobile version that I’m using right now, you can click the “Last Post” link to the right of the title of each thread.  By definition, it takes you to the last page of thread.  I assume this feature is also available on desktop.

RE: Questions of the Mod - admin - 04-24-2018

Not only can you go to the last page of a multipage thread, but you can also go to the last item read by selecting the green arrow or by using the Today's Posts or New Posts menu items under the Misc menu.

RE: Questions of the Mod - CompSci87 - 04-24-2018

Okay, but I was trying to go to the last page from within a page of the thread.

RE: Questions of the Mod - admin - 04-24-2018

The last page of a thread is always the link next to the "next" link. I could probably change it to a pull-down menu, but how often do people look for specific pages within a thread?

RE: Questions of the Mod - CornFed - 04-24-2018

What is an invisible user?  Does one need to do something to qualify.  Sounds EXTREMELY cool and I think I might be interested in being invisible.
