One reason Shittu may be looking around - yvonne - 06-14-2011

Here's a story that's a bit old, but could shed light on why the once hypermotivated commit (was reported to be recruiting other players to come to Stanford) suddenly dropped us.

Re: One reason Shittu may be looking around - CowboyIndian - 06-15-2011

"Kyle Kalis, an offensive tackle committed to Ohio State, said he thought salaries would end up hurting players because they'd just buy "more stuff they can get in trouble with," and he questioned how much pocket change star athletes really need. "When I go out I don't really pay for anything," he says."

He sounds like Ohio State material.

I don't see anything in that article about why he's looking at other schools. It just seems like he's not a lock to get admitted so he wants to find a good back up school.

I just noticed this over at the Irish Envy site.

Yesterday, a West Coast recruiting analyst for Rivals (in a Seattle Times Q&A session) said that he believes Sh!ttu is currently a Cal lean.

Shittu is visiting Cal this Saturday and Stanford on Monday and then USC next Wednesday.

We'll see how sound his decision calculus is...

From what I'm hearing, he's a Cal/USC battle.

Don't shoot the messenger.

We should be able to figure this out, right?  We were all 18 once?  Doesn't help.

I have an 18 year old - Don't bet the farm (or not bet on "The Farm") based upon the weekly vicissitudes of an 18 year old male's internet musings.

The subterranean streams of ego, irrational emotion, parental expectations, trying to stake out an independent identity and the \weight of all the testosterone for the under 20 male set - well, decision making just isn't rational or linear.

And MY son is just trying to navigate his first summer job, get out of bed on time and figure out how to deal with his first serious GF.  Add in the weightiness of an internet audience, the ponderous self-importance of NCAA football and a college world seeming to hang on your every tweet?  For an 18 YEAR OLD ?!?!

Take a deep breath and remember it's a long road race, there's lots of good runners and we're still in June.

What's your son doing, Leftcoast? - Mick - 06-19-2011

Boy does your post resonate.  Mine is back from his frosh year in college.  I told him he better find a job, because if he didn't, I would find one for him and he probably wouldn't care for it.  So he did actually end up finding his own job...responded to a Craigslist ad and now he's doing research for a real estate firm.

How's your son doing, LC?  How does he like the summer job?

I won't shoot the messenger. I'm just extremely disappointed that the first time I can remember getting a five star recruit, he's a brobdingnagian cheerleader, and then suddenly, he's interested in our two biggest conference rivals. It's like being on the opponent's ten yard line, and then having a fumble returned for a touchdown against you.

The other thing I wonder is whether he's persuading all those kids he was talking to to also look at our rivals.

Does it have anything to do with qualifying issues? I thought that would be the main reason why he would drop Stanford. Then there are rumors that Stanford was more of his parents decision. One thing that's for sure...he's a performer, and he enjoys the recruiting spotlight. Even when he was committed to Stanford, he had some interesting comments via social networking.

Re: One reason Shittu may be looking around - Leftcoast - 06-19-2011

Thanks for checking in, Mick.

My eldest is in his first post HS summer and while he's done a lot of volunteer work in local theater (and been paid for some of it) this summer he's a near full-time  Lifeguard at a local water park.

Guess what?  It turns out there's more to this than just wearing cool shades, directing traffic and watching pretty young women.  Being a good swimmer doesn't matter that much beyond being the price of entry.  Among other things,  he's had to assist with some possible injuries (one treated as a possible spinal injury) and deal with all manner of guest behavior.  ("Dad, some people are just RUDE, you wouldn't believe what this kid said to me today!")

You grow up a lot on your first job.  And it's good to have someone else doing the coaching!
