I've taken one of these on-line classes from Stanford (on human performance) and it was very good.

Sports and the University

Sports are everywhere in US universities. Why is this? What does it matter? What are the benefits—and what are the costs? How should the system change? In this course, we will explore six key topics at the intersection of athletics and American college life:

1. Ancient Athletics
2. History of US College Sports
3. Economics
4. Race
5. Gender
6. Aesthetics and Meaning

This sounds really interesting, but I've never done one of these before. I see there's a start and end date, but are the videos typically live or posted on-line for viewing at your convenience? Is there even a live component? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

for the class I took all the material was recorded.  They put up a lecture a week that you could listen to when it was convenient, you could also pause and pick up the lecture later.  They had a short "quiz" after most of the sections.

There was an on-line forum to let people chat about the content.

the above being written I have no idea if this class is run the same way
