They lost 12 wallets in 17 different cities with identifying info to see how many were returned....

Small sample size but interesting experiment. The winners were two cities from completely different cultures/sizes/geographies. And NY didnt do poorly.

An Honesty Competition without considering Japan is like a football championship without considering Alabama.

They should also have considered Singapore. Some years ago I was there with relatives and one of them left a small bag in his taxi upon arriving at our hotel. He was upset because it contained medicines. The bellboy told him, "Don't worry, this is Singapore." Sure enough, 5 minutes later the taxi returned with the bag.
GG is also right about Japan. In Tokyo, I got up one morning to take a walk through a neighborhood and was amazed to see all the bicycles parked along the sidewalk, none locked.

Found a wallet on University in March with $150+ cash in it. Looked at ID, while walking back home saw the kid on his cell asking restaurant if they have it.
About 5-6 years ago at a Brad Paisley concert at Shoreline found one at the concession stand area with $100+. Found the kid running back for it. Hey was VERY HAPPY!

It's a nice thing to think about, but possibly naive. I don't know NYC well enough, but in the SF Bay Area, there are places where a wallet might be returned, and places I'd bet a wallet wouldn't be returned. (I'm not picking on the SF Bay Area -- I just intend to say there are diverse populations within the area.) How I would choose to distribute the 12 wallets might be different than someone else (perhaps from a different culture) might choose to distribute them.

When I was in Japan, I didnt have enough cash to buy some spoons that I thought were cute. The owner said, You? And then he made a peddling motion with his hands. I told him, No, me no bicycle. And he shook his head and said, Me bicycle. YOU (peddling motion)
And thats when I realized that he was offering me his bicycle to ride to the ATM. So he drew me a map and I wrote his rickety bicycle to the ATM. And as ca245 noted, at the ATM, I parked his bicycle in a completely full bicycle rack, and there was not a single lock on any of them.
I still have the sooons.

I did some work in Saudi Arabia in the mid-late 70's. On my first arrival, the guy picking me up told me to leave my suitcase and briefcase on the floor of the arrival area while we went to get his car. I protested, but he said that nobody would steal any of my property as the punishment for theft was the loss of a hand. He was right, and I assume that things haven't changed over the past 40 years....

Not in Saudi, but last month a cab driver in Dubai turned in diamonds worth 1.2M USD left behind in his cab. Honesty or fear of punishment?
